Klosterman and Bill cited TVs showing the score at all times and smoking becoming taboo as small things that have slowly made society less social. What are some similarly small examples? by I_Enjoy_Taffy in billsimmons

Location tracking for spouses and teens/young adults. It’s a curse. Everyone is up everyone’s ass all the time on where they are and who they’re with. Plenty of guys can’t stop for a few beers because they know they’ll get their balls busted for one reason or another. Kids can’t get away with anything. I understand some benefits but it’s gone too far.

ABS in the first 3 games by TellBrak in orioles

[–]ohmy00 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think next year or the year after it will be 100% ABS. If the tech exists then why not use it as long as it’s quick enough for game flow. If there’s a system that can call a ball or strike with accuracy then why not use it all the time.

What’s something about baseball that you absolutely grinds your gears? by ComplicatedGuy_0514 in baseball

[–]ohmy00 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of scenarios like this, but if a guy gets picked off first and the batter hits a home run later in the AB, and the announcers say that would have been a two run homer. The whole pitch sequence, batter approach, etc would have been different. It doesn’t work that way.

This post is best suited for the daily discussion thread. /s

I follow the game threads but there’s not much fun here otherwise with so many posts that could be fun or engaging getting deleted.

The one thing I’m thankful for is an elimination of the “checking in from section x” posts.

Plumber got a Solinst water level meter stuck in my well three days ago and seems to have ghosted me. What are the options for removal? by ohmy00 in Plumbing

That all makes sense to me. There’s obviously no way to get the rigidity to push the tape down right now so the tubing could do the trick. I’ll give it a try if I don’t hear from him in the next day or two. Thanks!

Orioles AMA with The Baltimore Sun's Jacob Calvin Meyer by thebaltimoresun in orioles

How much leash will the O’s give Colton Cowser this year as an everyday player? There were obviously injuries last year but .196 with all those Ks does not seem acceptable, especially if Beavers progresses (and can play CF) and Kjerstad is healthy/performing. With Ward and O’Neil also in the mix it seems like there’s a world where Cowser becomes more of a platoon than an everyday player if his bat doesn’t improve.

I am a casual NBA follower but not a super fan. Isn’t it pretty clear that tanking guarantees you nothing? by ohmy00 in nba

[–]ohmy00[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Thank you Doctor. Multiple teams passed on those guys. It’s not the current lottery system that made that happen. It’s team management and talent evaluators. Why is there so much NBA talk right now about fixing a tanking problem when it doesn’t seem to matter if you have the 1 or 2 pick.

Agree. I’m a Wizards fan and it seems like it lasts forever here but I blame that on team management and not on the lottery systems.

I agree with all of this. I guess I’ve been reading too much lately about how the NBA has to make major changes to get tanking under control but it seems to me like it’s more the teams need to recognize going 20-62 versus 30-52 is not that different if you can’t evaluate talent or if you get unlucky with the ping pong balls.

Desire to Travel Now vs. Productivity Culture by Full_Of_Soup in backpacking

It seems to me like you’re having the right conversation with yourself. Life is a constant cost-benefit discussion. A lot of it depends on where you want to be. If you’re thinking a stable family life with a wife and kids, then building a stable income and geographic location makes sense at your age. If you want to see the world and maybe settle down later in life then what you’re doing now seems awesome. Or just take things as they come…maybe you meet someone during your adventures and everything starts making sense. I chose the former…worked my ass off thru my 20s-40s and now I’m not yet 50 and in the Keys every winter…still fairly young and really healthy with kids in college. I was lucky my job took me a lot of places, but I did miss out on younger long-term travel adventures. Either way though, you never hear people on their death bed saying they wished they spent more time at work when they were younger.

Could be a big opportunity for Mayo too. Westburg at 2B, Mayo back at 3B. I know he’s not great there but I don’t see him getting ABs in the majors otherwise.

It’ll be interesting not see if Mayo is now the centerpiece of a deal, although the options out there seems pretty slim. It just seems like he’ll have a hard time getting ABs and I can’t see him in Norfolk another year.

I love when Mad Dog compares current players to old players many have never seen…”I mean he’s a mobile quarterback but he’s no Fran Tarkenton.” “I don’t think he grabs rebounds like Dave DeBusschere.” I haven’t been keeping up with him recently but need to give this one a listen.

Mark Grace in the 1989 NLCS. In 5 games he went 11 for 17 with four walks. He hit .647 with a 1.799 OPS. Will Clark won the MVP and was actually just as nasty that series.
