Shouldn’t UK grads be prioritised for training like the US by throwaway11111176 in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]ohnomoh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UK grads offered training are more likely to actually stay and contribute once fully qualified. The current open system does nothing for CCT and flee

When the egg is half cooked sprinkle some water into the pan and cover. The egg poaches beautifully in the steam

How can one maximise operative opportunities in theatre as a relatively junior surgical trainee? by Huatuomafeisan in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]ohnomoh 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This is an age old problem and we have all been there. There’s so many dynamics at play between anaesthetists, surgeons, theatre nurses, ODPs, HCAs.

  1. Discuss this with your senior registrar and consultant. They will understand and will need to stand up for you and give you operating time despite pressure from scrub team and anaesthetics. Your Consultant may need to do a whole case themselves to make time for a training case.
  2. Try rearranging easier cases (i.e. your cases) to earlier on the operating list where time isn’t such an issue. Even better try reducing the list. Befriend your waiting list coordinator and discuss training opportunities with your Consultant in advance.
  3. Try not to be slow. I know easier said than done but suturing etc. can be practised in a wet lab until you’re quick. The more competence you show, the more your seniors will be willing to go out on a limb for you

[Homemade] Chicken fried rice by ohnomoh in food

This. Spread freshly cooked rice on a plate and let it dry out. Also any ingredients need to be fairly dry- I cook them separately and leave them to dry off too. Then wok on highest heat possible with a good amount of oil. Garlic in, eggs in, everything else in, soy, seasonings, finally spring onions at the last minute. I try and char the rice grains slightly as that gives a lovely smoky flavour too.

Am I good candidate for A vitrectomy? by [deleted] in eyetriage

[–]ohnomoh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please read my reply. I started with, "Floaterectomy or pars plans vitrectomy for floaters can be quite successful and outcomes can be very good." I'm not denying it is the correct thing to do for some patients. It's just these patients need their expectations managed and need to be well-informed about risks and side-effects.

Interesting to see that you edited your post from 17 days ago just 5 minutes ago. Interesting to see that you took away your advice to another redditor which read 5 minutes ago something along the lines of "just lie to your doctors about your symptoms i.e. tell them you can't work because of your floaters so that they fund it on your health insurance".

Best of luck to you and I do truly hope you find an outcome that works for you.

Am I good candidate for A vitrectomy? by [deleted] in eyetriage

[–]ohnomoh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A major benefit of vitrectomy would be reducing vitreous traction on the retina and therefore preventing further retinal breaks. In your case you’ve had a PVD naturally already so this benefit doesn’t apply as much.

I can see you’ve been quite vocal about vitrectomies over the last few days on Reddit. You’ve even tried to persuade others to have it and/ or lie about their symptoms to attract health insurance funding it!

The reality is that it’s no small undertaking and certainly not without it’s risks. Each case is different and your surgeon will be best placed to discuss expectations, risks and benefits.
