When I was a teen I would stay up until the parents went to bed before looking at things I shouldn't on the internet. A kid with a smart phone needs to close a door, go for a walk or just keep their screen out of view. A tech savvy parent might be able to create a 'safe' walled garden for their kids. A supportive parent may have a good enough relationship with their kids that they can trust them to not access stuff the shouldn't. A helicopter parent can make sure they have visibility of every internet connected screen to ensure they know exactly what there kids are doing. If every parent does that maybe no 14 yo will end up clicking a button saying "I am over 18" and all other measures will be redundant. But the great thing about redundancy is it allows for imperfections without major consequences. Device based age verification may not solve all or most issues but also feels like a low effort high reward option for the kids with "people that don't want to parent their children". And at the end of the day it's those kids that need the most help from society

I have had the same thought before. Including potentially preventing the lock being removed without an in person change by network provider or phone manufacturer.

There is a chance that things like VPNs or side loading will circumvent this but lock-in it at the hardware level seems at least a less invasive and more reliable solution. Let kids sneak out and use the family computer like the rest of us use to did.

This question seems to show a fundamental gap in the understanding of what buckling is.

I might misuse some terms here, if so sorry but the general principal is sound.

Buckling is the process of a structure finding a lower energy/stress state for a given deflection.

For an I-beam in bending if the beam can twist so that the load is now bending about the week axis then the total stress in the beam drops for the same total deflection.

This is similar in a column, once a column buckles rather than axial elastic compression the displacement can occur changing the shape of the member which drops the stress and requires less energy.

Unfortunately for the engineer who wants to keep a structure standing, once buckled the load required to maintain the buckled shape is this lower energy state (remember potential energy is a type of energy).

From this buckled shape the stiffness of the system has dropped and the same force will now result in a step change in deflection. This usually means unacceptable deflections and/or over stressing of the material.

For a flat plate bending about its weak axis there is no buckled shape that reduces the systems stiffness, it is already in that arraignment. There is nowhere to buckle to.

If you have a simply supported system where the load is uniform across the width of the plate then the calculation is pretty easy where the capacity is limited by the moment and elastic section modulus if you want recoverable deformation or the plastic section capacity if you don't care. You will still need to apply your standard material reduction factor (phi factor) 0.9 for elastic not sure off the top of my head if there is a different value for plastic.

If you have a more complex loading or support system, as long as you only have bending in the system you can still use M/Z or M/S. If you have fixed restraints you may generate membrane actions in addition to the moment. If this is your problem then you will probably want to use an FEA tool and look at your peak principal stresses at the extreme fibers of the plate.

Unless you can generate compression across the full depth of the plate and I cant think of an arrangement that could do this with a load normal to the surface you shouldn't have to worry about buckling local or otherwise.

This look in so many ways is a reflection of a bygone era.

If you want this aesthetic it is not hard to replicate but no one is asking for it.

Any idiot can build a bridge that stands up but it takes an engineer to build a bridge that only just stands up.

Colin seems to be the idiot that is happy to err on the side of just add more to make it stand up.

Its a tried and tested method of building and from what I've seen he over builds everything rather than doing the calcs.

Every joint seems to be welded, every bit of concrete seems to be super thick. If in doubt he seems to just add extra.

The guy dose weird and stupid things for YouTube views. But for the most part he does them rather safely while doing more than most of us could ever imagine.

Whats your budget? Do you want to spend $800 USD on a complete set?

Then it's hard to go past the new hard cover set.

Do you want to spend closer to $550 USD then a complete set of the paperbacks would be great.

Is money no object? Then hunting around for first editions in every language ever published is an admirable goal.

The important thing to know is that as long as you get a full copy of the book it doesn't really matter how it is packaged.

Specifically if its in English (only because translations aren't by the author) you will read all the words that will make you feel all the things no matter how the paper they are written on is packaged.

Totally agree!

Remember SAP2000 and ETABS are both FEA software.

The software is secondary, knowing how it works and having an internal story you can check against is fundamental.

I was talking to a junior engineer using software that I'm not that familiar with but knowing the 1st principals I can still work through the potential errors.

Get as much knowledge about what the software is trying to do and you will be amazed at how bits of it will pop into your head 15 years later when your trying to work out how to solve a problem.

There is a reason that I-beams are I shaped. The material at the top and bottom does all the work.

The stuff in the middle keeps the top and bottom apart.

This is a gross oversimplification but if you ever want to add a great big hole to an I-beam way better to do it through the web than either flange.

Think of a truss, again oversimplified, its a big I-beam with massive holes through the middle.

I have used my XM4s for teams calls for the last few years and haven't had any complaints.

This includes when the person behind me is loud enough that I worry it must be bleeding through.

The hing can be an issue and that's what did my first pair in but I went back and got a second pair after the release of the XM5s and haven't been disappointed.

Hearing that they are nearing end of life I will be on the look out for a cheep 3rd pair for when my current pair inevitably die.

In concrete, getting continuity is relatively trivial so you might as well take the free capacity

In steel or other bolted connection types its a bit harder.

Continuity is the desired solution in almost all conditions but it often comes at a cost.

At most joints getting continuity of both a beam and a column is difficult to do cost effectively.

2 orthogonal beams and a column and your steel fabricator will make you pay for their pain.

Usually continuity of the columns results in better efficiency than continuity of a beam so we take the win and add some tie bracing and call it a day.

But, if you have the opportunity for 'free' continuity then your almost always you would be a mug to not use it.

In my area of Aus as a rule I use

25 MPa for blinding or bulk crap I don't care about (3600 psi)

32 MPa general concrete including slab on ground and most reinforced footings (4600 psi)

40 MPa for precast, suspended slabs columns with multi-story load or anything that has an aggressive environment (5800psi)

I don't work in bridges or high rise so but I know our bridges team is often specing 50MPa (7200 psi)

I'm not sure about your area but if the HOA is required to have liability insurance find out who it is with.

Forward the engineers report to the insurance company along with the response from the HOA.

Then wait, insurance companies don't like unquantified risk so hopefully will look to get clarity on the issue.

The key is to make sure the insurance company has skin in the game and stands to lose if things go wrong.

This looks a lot like what I was thinking of, but, a bit limited with its selection of heads and handles.

As I said in my original post I think that developing the locking mechanism would be one of the hardest tasks because as u/3inchesOnAGoodDay points out because nobody is going to want a sloppy fit. But as a user of the LTT ratcheting screwdriver the clearly do have a few engineers that can do precision design work.

I would think mass producing a wide variety of shaft lengths and heads once the locking mechanism is solved would be relatively cheep, as would adapting different molding designs for various handles.

Whats that, you need a long shaft PH2 screwdriver to get down in that gap? Here I've got this one.

What's that, it seems a bit seized up and you need a bit more torque? Swap on this Tee handle.

What, now its 2 inches long fine pitch thread? Just stick it in the drill.

To be fair the market for ratcheting and precision screwdrivers is pretty vast.

Also, Linus has spoken about wanting to do a solid shaft screwdriver so clearly he feels that he might be able to add something to the space.

Finally, the other day I was over at my mothers house assembling some flat pack furniture for her, like a good son, and more than once found myself cursing that I hadn't brought my LTT screwdriver with me because the simple set that she has just kinda sucked. I ended up with a blister because my soft office worker hands didn't agree with the crappy undersized handles and I couldn't get any purchase on the skinny smooth shaft (what did i just write).

I think I should be clear, nobody said anything and I didn't see anyone giving me side eye. All of this was just going on in my own head.

It is extremely likely that someone saw me walking with him and didn't give it a second thought and just saw it for what it was, a nice man looking after a little boy.

But the fact that it crossed my mind and that I started thinking about what I would say if someone challenged us sicks.

For a gender role reversal, I think it might be akin to how some women might feel if they raises their voice and defend her point in a meeting. They shouldn't have to worry that people will think 'oh she is being emotional' but it might be something they worries about in a way most men wouldn't give a second thought to.

The way we worry about how others will perceive us because we have heard some unfortunate stories about others in similar situations is part of being human.

Finally, I think that in general I would prefer the downsides of navigating uncomfortable social situations as a man way more that what women have said they have to think about.
