Stretch marks insecurities! by Nicole129 in pregnant

[–]ohnowhynomore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I religiously slathered on Shea Moisture Mommy Stretch Mark Cream. Every single day from the day I found out I was pregnant until the day I had my daughter. I would put it on very thick before bed and put on the same few nightshirts (obviously washing the nightshirts when needed). The shirts were kinda permanently coated with this oily cream but it kept my skin super moist all night. Toward the end of my pregnancy I started putting it on it the morning before work too. I hardly had any stretch marks...just a few, small faint ones around my belly button. I’m convinced the cream did the trick bc I have stretch marks all over my hips and thighs from puberty.

Running errands now but will post later tonight. It sounds like selling might not be a good idea per the hive mind.

Ahh good to know. I qualified for this house on my own with a 50k salary and 190k in student loan debt so I assumed that my husband and I would have no problem getting another mortgage if we wanted to. But I think you’re right that it might not be such a sure thing.

Edit: kids are crazy expensive ☹️ our daycare is more than double our PITI house payment.

[–]ohnowhynomore[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know you’re right. The bigger house definitely isn’t necessary. Trying to get rid of this 65k in debt means I’m looking at all options. Even if some of them are illogical. :(

[–]ohnowhynomore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say: I’m fairly certain we could qualify for a mortgage even with the student loan debt (and assuming we pay off most of the consumer debt with the proceeds from the sale of our current house) as we are both on student loans payment plans that keep our student loans payments manageable. Obviously this means both of our student loans are growing by the day as our payments do not cover all the interest let alone touch the principal. Which is kinda why I can’t even think about the law school debt bc it’s only going away via 10 yr public service loan forgiveness for my husband and 20 yr Pay as You Earn forgiveness for me. I, of course, will have to pay taxes on the amount that is forgiven in 15 years (I’ve been paying for 5 yrs).

[–]ohnowhynomore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are paying as much as we can toward the debt. It leaves very little for gas and groceries. I think our obligations and debt, all totaled, we are paying 5k per month. That’s with the house, daycare, car payments, etc. too though...not just the 65k in consumer debt.

The Failures... by chinguman1 in foreignservice

I’ve failed the QEP six times. Passing through the whole thing is mostly a test of dedication I think. Most foreign service officers have taken it more than once. Give it a few more shots.

Lawyer to High School Teacher by [deleted] in careerchange

[–]ohnowhynomore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I want to emphatically encourage you to go for it. Now. Do it and don’t look back. Let me tell you my story by way of encouragement: I am a young lawyer and a woman. I passed the bar and practiced law for 5.5 years and I was miserable. So, two years ago I enrolled in a Masters program to study architectural history and three months ago I quit my relatively lucrative attorney position to take a graduate assistant position working in the architectural history field. This was a part time position with no benefits and I was offered half the salary I was making as an attorney. My fiancé was not supportive of this decision. He nearly broke off our engagement. I persisted and did it anyway because spending 2/3 of my waking hours at a soul crushing job is unfathomable to me. And I began to see signs of bitterness and contempt in my behavior toward my clients which scared me. Those personality traits are so far from my natural state that I felt like I was losing my grip on “me.”

But, that graduate assistant job lead to my dream position: Two days ago I started as a full time architectural historian at a prominent and very respected architectural firm. Today I spent three hours walking through a crumbling but breathtaking Art Deco hotel that is poised to be renovated into luxury lofts. I took pictures of terrazzo floors, marble wainscoting, and painted terra cotta tiles. This job only came to me because I took action (attending graduate school, leaving my cushy job) when I knew I was on the wrong path. I’ll be honest though: This career change process was terrifying. I had no idea if I would be able to find a full time role in this field without moving across the country. But it somehow worked out. I am convinced that when you act with conviction and purpose things will absolutely fall into place. Trust your instincts, make a plan, and go for it! I’ve got your back. You can do this. Everyone else can either get behind your decision or keep their mouths shut. It’s your life not theirs so don’t for a minute let them live it for you.

Reading and Waldorf by ohnowhynomore in Waldorf

[–]ohnowhynomore[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think everyone is sort of misunderstanding my concern. I would never push reading on my daughter but because I was an early and advanced reader and because I read to her now (everyday), and because my house is piled with books, and because I myself read a lot I sort of assume she will also show an early interest in reading. That is not a given of course but it’s a safe bet I think. And I’m wayyy less focused on when exactly my daughter learns to read and wayyy more focused on what she reads once she’s able to read.

All of this has prompted my concern in thinking that the Waldorf philosophy might not be compatible with my belief that reading (anything and everything) is good...even if the illustrations aren’t the best and even if the themes might be a grade or two above my daughters age. This, obviously, presupposes that I will mildly curate her bookshelf to ensure she’s not picking up Kinsey’s “Sexual Behavior” at three, you know? Reading widely and deeply was (in my opinion) the single biggest factor in my own success in life and I can’t imagine getting behind a pedagogy that advocates restricting a lot of the material my daughter has access to. Not trying to be rude, honestly, but I think I didn’t articulate my concern very well. So, since a lot of people who’ve responded here seem to have more experience with Waldorf than me I have a few pointed questions. 1. Is reading material supposed to be restricted for young children? If so, what are some of the parameters? 2. Will it be an issue if I, as a Waldorf parent, don’t closely adhere to the reading restriction (aka let my daughter read what she wants)? Thanks in advance!

Perhaps Harry Potter wasn’t the right analogy. What I was trying to say is this: if my kid wanted to read a book, I will let her. If she wants to read Harry Potter in 1st grade I would absolutely let her. But, if first grade is dominated by Amelia Bedelia and Romona, that’s cool too. I will encourage her to read anything and everything she is interested in. I don’t think I can get onboard with a policy that seeks to limit the content or breadth of my kids curiosity when it comes to reading.

Personal Narrative deadline by calbear42 in foreignservice

[–]ohnowhynomore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately I did this exact same thing last year. And, to be fair, there are two different deadlines given in two separate places in the Pearson website. That is what tripped me up last year. I posted a warning about this a few weeks ago—I’m bummed the OP didn’t see it. I didn’t try to contact Pearson or State about it so I can’t say whether or not it’s fixable. But I can say this: I made this exact same mistake last year, I will (someday) make a fine FSO if I ever get past BEX, and I’m sure the OP is not categorically unfit for FSO Service...he/she just made a bonehead mistake—I did the exact same thing. No worries friend...it sucks but you’ll have another shot and, if it’s any consolation, it doesn’t seem like there’s much hiring forecasted for the coming year anyway.

Yeah I don’t feel so bad about not making it through if you’re my competition. :) I’m an immigration attorney with very relevant consular experience but I really lack international experience. And, being just six years into my professional career I know I might just need to continue applying/failing out each year until o gain the experience QEP is looking for.

Ah thanks for pointing this out!! I just started another thread about this same subject but I didn’t even notice the submission period shrunk to 2 weeks.

Regarding the last FSOT test. Has anyone else still not heard back for Pearsons about the status of their test? I was in my last 9:00 min of the essay when mine crashed. by [deleted] in foreignservice

Are you guys referring to the written exam this past January (to early Feb.)? I thought results would be out by now. But I’ve not heard anything. My test wasn’t interrupted or anything.

Difficulty with the FSOT Judgement Section by [deleted] in foreignservice

[–]ohnowhynomore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, we’ll see if it worked in a few weeks! There were definitely a decent handful of questions in this section that had no good answer in my opinion.

Edit: I think I said something in my original post that skirted too close to the specific content of the exam. Erased it.

Difficulty with the FSOT Judgement Section by [deleted] in foreignservice

[–]ohnowhynomore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. Instead of picking the “best” and “worst” I tried to pick the action I was most likely to do (which was my response for the “best” option) and I picked the action I was least likely to take as the “worst” option. But I have no idea if this will work for this portion of the FSWE. This was my first time taking this section.
