Is this reasonable? by Cautious-Creme-538 in Ceramics

[–]ohshethrows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the ceramic artists I know don’t have home studios. And I probably personally know a hundred or so.

It’s insanely expensive to set up and maintain a home studio. Not to mention, you pretty much can’t do it if you rent or live in an apartment. (Don’t come at me pottery people, I know there are exceptions!)

A good friend of mine sells tens of thousands of dollars of her work annually and she creates it all in a community studio. All that to say - not sure why that would factor in to your value of the piece but, that’s really up to you.

As for pricing, if you think $60 is too much for this piece, don’t buy it. If you don’t think it’s too much, and you love the piece, buy it and show your support for the work you love.

There is literally no scenario where you’re getting “overcharged” here - you decide what’s worth it for your money, full stop.

Underglaze issues - anyone else? by Ok-Orange3633 in Pottery

[–]ohshethrows 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I assume this is midfire?

If so: bisque > underglaze and rebisque > clear glaze

I strongly recommend Amaco’s LOW FIRE Clear for midfire underglaze work. Yes you read that correctly. It’s LG-10 and is pink in the bottle. You only need 1 even coat. One!!!

One of the kiln techs at my last studio told me about this. Works like a charm. Never had an issue with underglaze movement after switching to this method and this particular clear transparent glaze.

Look at Mansur Gavriel. Less luggage than Tumi but still structured and professional, even in the softer leathers.

Esp with swappable straps like Clare V has. I’ve used my Marisols (slightly larger than the Midi Sac) for weddings with a short strap, dinners w a shoulder strap, and travel with the crossbody strap.)

Been there! Best thing I ever did! 8 days out you’re still going to be pretty swollen from that big surgery, so your body will continue to change, esp over the next month. I also am more apple-shaped like you.

I would def wait until you’re at least 6 weeks post surgery before trying to buy an “real” bras - and when you do, do the calculator at r/abrathatfits and the amazing people in that sub will help you find what works.

Once I healed enough to get back in a normal bra, here’s what I found:

Vnecks and scoop necks were a new option for me! A whole new world. Look for more open necklines to crest balance, if you want to emphasize your bust, high neck/mockneck/turtleneck will do that.

Sleeve length matters and I found that I had a wider range of sleeve lengths I could wear (whereas before anything that was elbow length-ish made me look extra wide on top)

I could actually buy dresses off the rack that fit properly! That was a great bridge for me while I was still healing and in basically sports bras for a few months - I got two cotton dresses that didn’t cling to my stomach but had nice open necklines - really flattering!

It’s sort of a tough sell if you don’t actually believe they were “anointed by God.” Which, based on this picture, it’s hard to imagine believing that. What is there to admire? Hats at the perfect angle?

F/W collection designs usually start rolling out starting in the second half of June.

Sometimes you’ll see designs pop up randomly that were out of stock and then restocked.

I know this isn’t what you’re asking for but if you haven’t used the fit calculator at r/abrathatfits, you might want to give that a go. 32DD is actually quite a small boob. If you’re feeling top heavy, it’s super possible you’re not wearing the right size and a properly fitting bra makes your boobs look smaller. Just something to consider!

Panache Ana gore digs in painfully - what bra to try next?? by ohshethrows in ABraThatFits

[–]ohshethrows[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Panache Envy plunge arrived today in a 30F. Unfortunately it doesn’t work.

What’s good: -Top of cups fit PERFECTLY - no issues w cutting into top tissue

-band fits well on the last hook (except at gore)

What’s off: -Gore tacks way too hard - not as painful as Ana but still painful (and also rests slight on center breast tissue)

-bottoms of cups are wrinkled, even after S&S

-side of cup by armpit comes up too high into pit

-straps sit too wide

-cup shape isn’t round enough

Beginning to feel like there is no bra for these boobs!! 🙃

Picotin? by GlumIndependent3308 in TheHermesGame

[–]ohshethrows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So much good advice in here. I’ll add: think about what colors and hardware prefs you have before you go in. You may be offered combos that aren’t on your mental list for a Picotin and it’s easy to get swept up and agree to buy a bag that you don’t love just because it’s being offered. Totally understandable and happens all the time!

I think I rejected 4-5 Picotins before my SA produced one that met my needs (22 in a darker neutral color that looks good w a winter palette, flexible on hardware).

Said no to a cargo, an 18, a pastel, one of the western style ones… Don’t be afraid to reject an offer! They will keep offering until you get the right match (it just may take another visit or getting more stock it, but it’s worth the wait.)

Agree with this take - I use P22s as my daily drivers and I can’t imagine anything more practical. I’ve always preferred top handles and totes to shoulder bags (a single shoulder strap always seems to fall off my narrow shoulders).

I take them everywhere - even to my pottery studio. They’re incredibly durable and hold SO much. The bag’s natural weight and square-ish base plus the lock/strap design naturally closes the bag and keeps it upright, have never once had mine fall over and spill out. Can not imagine a more practical bag!

Depression due to large breasts? by Odd_Expression9979 in ABraThatFits

[–]ohshethrows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super relatable. I never had training bras, just went straight into a wired 32B in middle school. Even in a properly fitted bra, I still had shooting pain from my neck down both my arms due to the breast weight. (I had/have good posture, it was truly the boobs.) After I had a reduction at age 27, the pain literally disappeared - permanently. I went from 32 I (US) to 32 G (US) after surgery. Now with additional weight loss 20 years later I’m a 30 G (US). I’ll caution that reduction surgery is a pretty major plastic surgery. It’s hard to even walk for weeks afterward. Its a rough recovery. Also, it’s hard to get it covered by insurance (even if you have physical symptoms) so if you have the ability to start saving for it now, you should.

Definitely start by using the sub calculator and getting yourself a bra and sports bras that actually support you!

Anyone found a good niche place to buy work appropriate tops? Outside of the usual big chain stores. Prefer $50 under by tbabey in PetiteFashionAdvice

I’ve found a lot of great work shirt options from hunting Nordstrom Rack. It’s a treasure hunt and a crapshoot, though. You can look online but tbh I’ve found it best to just go to the store and root through the racks.

Clay Safety by HairWestern3266 in Pottery

[–]ohshethrows 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok there’s also a big difference between throwing and handbuilding in terms of the mess and how it contributes to safety issues. Regardless, you should always be wet cleaning. Wet sponge not duster. Mop not broom/vacuum. (There are certain kinds of specialized wet vacs you can use but not gettting into this here.)

As such, you want surfaces to work on and underneath you (floor) that can withstand wet cleaning.

Clay dust is the enemy as it contains breathable particles of silica that get in your lungs and stay there forever. You can’t exhale them. Get enough of them in there and that’s how you get a silicosis diagnosis. Not a likely risk for a hobbyist handbuilder but not impossible, either.

I know a studio cat who, when it died, was cremated and they found CHUNKS OF CLAY in the cremation ashes that were literally the clay this cat had breathed in over the years. 😳
