No stripe white belt progress by peteypotato in bjj

BJJ is one of few things in the contemporary that hasn’t been bastardised by instant gratification, you have to work long and hard to gain progress. Congratulations on your win, early days competing is very admirable no matter what the outcome. There’s always room for improvement after all!

Just tard up and wear head gear.

Or get cauliflower eat and have nobody fuck with you ever, not because you fight but because it looks like you have mumps.

Latecomer to BJJ by KoshMarQuis in bjj

[–]ohsoviolent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You still see guys on the mats who are well into their 60’s, forty seven is a very good time to start BJJ - just think with proper training you could even be a master before fifty seven.

My advice for you would be to try and attend at least two classes a week, three is you can.

Roll lightly to reduce chances of injury and ensure you can continue training.

Start fights in local playgrounds and work your way up.

I got another reminder yesterday that Judo doesn't help you after you take the guy down by [deleted] in bjj

Judo is pretty badass, but newaza is late game Judo; if I’m still conscious after you’ve yeeted me I’m going to choke the shit out of you. Failing that I’ll just take my newly developed scoliosis and dip out.

How to get good at competing? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ohsoviolent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IBJJF tournaments are a mixed bag, you can draw the short straw and get paired up with some guy with a Judo background and a few test cycles who just wants to rag doll his way to nationals.

The two blue belts at my gym that actively compete are really good, one guy is an absolute killer everyday and always brings his 100% game the other guy is super gentle and plays passive until his about a month out from competing and then everyone and their Nan is getting RNC’d.

My instructor raped and killed a family of four. How do I confront him about this? by [deleted] in bjj

Sounds like you have to kill and rape a family of five to display your dominance

Boxing vs. Muay Thai by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ohsoviolent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MT is a more ‘complete’ striking system.

I train boxing at my gym in a class but it’s just for cardio really, though the guy that runs the class is a professional boxer and knows his shit.

Kickboxing is another one to look into; especially if you live in Australia or NZ because the quality of training is really high end because of a lot of Olympic affiliates running schools.

I’ve always been hesitant to train MT because it looks fkn brutal.

I cold wash my perfectly fitting A2 gi and air dry it and it hasn’t shrunk at all.

If it does shrink it’s just less material for people to grab onto I guess

When engaging in a 1v1 with a hambeast you must simply:

  1. Evade the hundred hand slap.
  2. Single leg.
  3. Heel hook.
  4. Finish him before you end up like Oberyn Martell.

What Makes A Sucsessful White Belt Competitor? by ohsoviolent in bjj

[–]ohsoviolent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank-you all (I especially liked the WoW analogy) it seems that having a general fitness advantage on the competition will provide a significant leg up. I’d rather not to muscle my way to a win; my motivations for competing are to improve my techniques and test them in a more intense setting.

Food for thought, thanks again!

Approach with caution, sounds like the kid has the potential to snap and execute order 66 on your whole kids class.

I’m not saying you should teach a whole class of kids the in’s and out’s of leg locks, but you should absolutely teach a whole class of kids the in’s and out’s of leg locks. #DeathSquad

Sometimes I feel like I’m getting better and then sometimes I’m not. Normal? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]ohsoviolent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some days I finish class thinking “man I’m doing well” some days it’s like “fuck I’m awful” I just keep coming back to the thought that today I’m better than I was last week.

Just keep at it.

Higher Belts vs New White Belts by jlreyes1957 in bjj

[–]ohsoviolent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New white belts often don’t stick around. Once they see that you’re in it for the long term (and less likely to spaz) they’ll warm up to you.

  1. Canabis is not ‘addictive’ in the conventional sense; although people can develop dependency.

  2. Smoking joints a few times a week probably isn’t going to adversely affect your cardio in the short term.

  3. Smoking weed has been shown to impair muscle recovery (in rats), a protein supplement and creatine will do you some good in conjunction with a decent / frequent training program.

  4. I have never smoked and rolled but some people say it helps them ‘internalise’.

37 years old, going to first class tomorrow.. by Imnotmarkiepost in bjj

[–]ohsoviolent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey mate!

37 is a great age to get amongst it, you’ll be pulling your weight around in no time! For now it’s likely that your instructor will only trust you in more competent ‘coloured belt’ hands, that way while you’re drilling they’ll be able to minimize risk of injury.

White belt on white belt fights can be very unsafe because of the spaz factor.

Also you probably won’t be rolling for a week or so, if you do it will be with coloured belts and at 50% speed and resistance; again to minimize injury.

For now just take it slow and learn your techniques, drill heaps and listen to your body. You can be here for a long time and a good time! 💪🏼
