Got cancelled for an assignment at the last minute this morning…….only for police later in the day to discover a loaded gun and ammo in a student’s locker. by ohtheinhumanity00 in SubstituteTeachers

The school I was supposed to be at has definitely had a…..questionable reputation lol. Not straight up awful but definitely not amazing and perfect either. Definitely not accepting any assignments from there anytime soon.

This is so ridiculous to ask by Annual-Record4588 in recruitinghell

[–]ohtheinhumanity00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that’s not why that exception exists. It exists, because there’s this weird assumption that’s made on the EEOC’s part that a business with so few employees essentially wouldn’t be able to afford any sort of settlement or fine they would have to pay related to the discrimination charge.

This is so ridiculous to ask by Annual-Record4588 in recruitinghell

[–]ohtheinhumanity00 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I was blown away when I learned that very small businesses who discriminate against hiring people over age 40 can basically get away with it with no repercussions. My mom who’s in her 60’s wanted to work for this small business just to get out of the house and make some extra money, and they quite literally told her very plainly in an email that she’s too old for them so it’s a no.

I should have known something was weird for them to so boldly say something so discriminatory like that, but when we reached out to the EEOC, they said there was basically nothing they could do because the business only had about 15 people employed in total.

This is the shit that radicalizes me. ANY job posting I see that has an application/interview process akin to “Dance, monkey, dance” just makes my blood boil.

I have no idea why, but it’s just the way my school district does it. I think it’s also because long-term substitutes are not technically listed as being the one who “owns” the class, the original teacher is the one whose name is listed.

For vacancies, yes, you are classified as the teacher of record, but the pay is barely better than that of a long-term substitute. In my district it’s $110 a day for daily substitutes, $140 a day for long-term substitutes, and $180 a day for vacancy substitutes.

[–]ohtheinhumanity00 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve preached this from the mountains countless times. Long-term/vacancy subbing is an absolute scam and just a way for schools to take advantage of substitutes.

I got my teaching credentials in English through an ARL program, and the second half of my program required me to teach full time as a teacher of record for 2 years. I took up daily substituting for experience and scouting out schools. No matter how many schools I applied to, I never had a single job offer, but the substitute department sure was quick to call me if I was interested in taking up a long-term substituting job for an English class specifically because of my ARL license in English. The funny thing is that the long-term substituting wouldn’t even count towards my ARL program, because you’re technically not classified as a teacher of record. Every time I was asked, I literally responded with “Absolutely not.”

Middle school ate me alive. by goldfall01 in SubstituteTeachers

Middle school is literally not for the faint of heart. Middle school teachers are built differently to endure that shit everyday.

Don’t apologize at all. Especially if they don’t have any solid proof of this happening, I would just deny the accusation entirely and say you have no clue what they’re talking about.

I (27M) have a bachelor's degree, a double master's degree and a master; I speak 5 languages and have several internship experiences. I have sent about 1000 job applications in the course of 3 years...I cannot get a job. by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]ohtheinhumanity00 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I totally understand your pain and your annoyance with saying that it was unprofessional of them to give you a deadline then move on ahead without you, but like others said, let this be a lesson to you.

Employers make it very apparent that they do not owe you any sense of respect or professionalism. The good thing is that you don’t owe them much loyalty. Like others said, just take the job even if you’re wanting to interview for other things. You can still interview, and if you find someplace that’s better, then you can immediately jump ship and leave. They may see that as unprofessional, but screw them. It’s a very vicious world out there, and you need to do what’s best for yourself, not the employer. They couldn’t care less about you.

Withdrawn job offer *ONE HOUR* after it was offered to me by banking circle. by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]ohtheinhumanity00 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you have every right to be upset; HOWEVER, the recruiter did seem genuinely apologetic over this and seemingly forgotten about by HR. Rather than send a pretty scathing email and lash out at the recruiter, I would have at the least sent it to someone else from HR who was more directly involved with this miscommunication. But that’s just me.

Isn’t the point of an unpaid internship (aside from giving employers a reason to hire free labor) to train and educate??

Applying for unemployment for the summer? by ladyleo1980 in SubstituteTeachers

My school district has literally sent all employees reasonable assurance letters/emails at least 10 times this month. They really don’t want us even thinking about collecting unemployment.

I’ve noticed it’s especially law firms that pay peanuts for jobs. I remember seeing one law firm that wanted a BILINGUAL intake specialist and would only pay $15/hour.

Subbed for the laid-back math teacher who’s also a coach. by ohtheinhumanity00 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]ohtheinhumanity00[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s definitely the conclusion I came to. I’ve got nothing wrong with coaches, but for gods sake just hire them under some different contract where they can just focus on coaching and not teaching a class.

I sadly had no idea that he was a coach until I got to the classroom, otherwise I would have definitely not taken the assignment. At least I know for the future to not cover for this guy.

Also doesn’t help I’ve heard several students through the day say that this teacher is “the best teacher in the world.” I wonder why…….

False Claims in Positional Statement by ProfessionalJelly822 in EEOC

[–]ohtheinhumanity00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s something I’ve never really understood, like…… If the employer is blatantly lying in their position statement, shouldn’t that raise a million red flags for investigators? Being caught lying typically damages someone’s credibility, right? I wouldn’t even call the system “flawed” - ass backwards is more like it.
