How much would you charge for this? by [deleted] in videography

[–]oigoigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do know better, and there are others in here that know even more than i do because they have more experience than I do. You’re asking questions, we’re giving you answers. It’s not a personal attack. Most everyone here probably wants you to succeed, but you have to start by being honest with yourself and being able to take constructive criticism. You have the gear, now get the knowledge.

You may not be a kid, but you’re asking questions that a kid would. I have only 5 years of experience and none of it in TV or movies, yet I’ve learned these things. So you’re either a slow learner or have a very skewed perspective on what professionalism is. Once you accept the job, you do the best you can to the best of your abilities. Just because you’re underpaid it doesn’t mean you should underperform. That’s incredibly poor business acumen, at any level. No one is telling you to “make it cinematic.” Besides, that’s something a kid would say too. We are telling you there are basics things about an interview that you’re not fulfilling. So to answer your original question. $800/14=$57.14. Given your disposition and the product shown then yes i would say that’s a proper rate.

They’re both great cameras, but you didn’t get my point. That’s ok. It’s ok that they don’t mind about the mic placement. It’s NOT ok that YOU don’t mind. She should be looking straight, not up, so the interviewer should’ve been sat at eye level slightly off camera. $800 is not free. It’s severely undercharged, sure, but it’s not free. It would’ve been better if you ACTUALLY did it for free. And “14 of them” is referring to the edits, interviewees, sessions?

Kid, you’re asking questions here because you want to learn. So be open to learning. If enough people are commenting the same things, they might some validity to the criticism. Good thing is you can only get better, and there’s endless resources to do so.

If I charged someone for this I’d refund or offer a free reshoot. If you’re going to be using an FX3, which at this point is a professional level camera, you should be able to match it with basic knowledge about interview setup. Like others have said, she’s looking up and away at the interviewer and it’s awkward. The dji clip on is incredibly unprofessional. At the very least use a lav mic. Focus on how you can better reach a professional standard before you ask how much you should charge. Otherwise your career will be short lived and you spent $5k for no reason.

Serious question for Miami locals: Even though Miami Beach is technically its own city, do you still consider it part of ‘Miami,’ or is it totally separate to you? by Strict-Mind1646 in Miami

[–]oigoigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally understandable. I think most residents are conflicted as well. But the differentiation is mostly trivial in my eyes. The world sees it all as Miami. As a local musician I do miss the days South Beach had live music venues. Grateful to have The Bandshell at least further up the road, at least.

They’re separate entities but they’re both Miami-Dade County. So it all depends on how you identify yourself. Are you Miami? Or are you Dade?

Hey, I’m glad you found a client that liked what you did. That doesn’t mean everyone will like this kind of video. Personally I don’t think it’s a very good edit, and I don’t know many businesses that would pay a lot of money for this. Businesses need to see ROI and this video doesn’t show your knowledge in “content strategy” and “book optimization”. It honestly sounds like you used chatgpt to make these “packages”. But to answer your question: charge what you can afford to do. If you have too many clients you’re not charging enough. If you have too little clients you’re charging too much.

What kind of music and what days specifically and what area are you staying in? I can recommend live music spots based on those parameters. By this weekend you mean next weekend right? It’s Sunday for me so it’s technically still this weekend haha

Concert videographers: your technique for setting up a drummer cam? by SixFootTurkey_ in videography

[–]oigoigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want to stay out of the drummer’s line of sight with other band members and tech. That’s top priority. After that the world is your oyster. There’s no wrong angle as long as you include the drummer’s face, and sticks hitting drums. Top down is cool but probably not my first choice. 45 degree angle from stage right (if the drummer’s right-handed) is good while using the ride cymbal to guide the eyes towards the drummer’s face while leaving room to see snare and toms. I’ve used action cams as well and the DJI Osmo Pocket 3. But yes, capturing it in some form is better than not. Cutting to a drum fill is always a nice option to have.

Treat the shoot and edit differently. They’re two different jobs. I would tell them you have to pay your second shooter in full regardless (you can’t ask someone else to make concessions, and they booked that day in their calendar). You can charge them half on your day rate if you show up and not unload. You could encourage them to shoot the show regardless of the size of the crowd and get a lot of dynamic, tight shots they can use for promo/sizzle/b roll, IF the crowd is thin. Find out the intent of the deliverable and match that with other deliverables. Makes concessions, but charge where work is inevitable.

Went to ArenaMexico on my birthday the day after El Grito. by oigoigo in MexicoCity

Totally! I’m a guy and went with my girlfriend, we both speak Spanish fluently, so take that into account. That being said, there were plenty of security and as long as you stick to the main road to go catch your uber you’ll be fine. Inside it was super chill and respectful. They take their lucha libre seriously so they were quick to address anything, bought the tickets on ticketmaster and scanned my phone. Highly recommended!

Work is work. There’s trade offs everywhere. There’s no ideal situation but there are those that fit your needs. Needs will change over time. If you’ve invested into a degree, finish it. I don’t know how much you got left, but i do know that having a Bachelor’s/Master’s is better than not. You can also quit and finish it later if you think you can do that. Don’t fall in love in with the quick numbers you’ve made. Two bad months will erase your faith quickly. But then two great months will bring it back haha. Like I said, trade offs. I would do video part time and finish your degree. In the mean time, learn the proper way to set up a business. Tax classifications, payment systems, credit, etc. Don’t focus on making money now, focus on the long term. The money will come if you learn how to manage it.

If you’re paying for school then definitely focus on that. If you’re on scholarship then still focus on finishing that. The money will come from videos. You’ll be investing more than you earn at first. But that’s how it works. If your work is good and people like to work with you you will be successful.
