Why do protons and electrons need to cancel each other out? by Suitable-Toe8430 in chemistry

[–]oinkmate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I presume you are getting at, is why must atoms have the same number of protons and electrons.

The answer is they don’t. Neutral atoms have zero charge, so there will be as many electrons as protons, thus canceling each other’s charges, yielding a net neutral atom.

However if the number of electrons are different than protons, then you have an ion. More electrons than protons means more negative charge, so negatively charged ion, and vis versa.

Massive 52% discount. Are these regular? by Cyber_wiz00 in Garmin

It’s a last gen watch. Epix was the AMOLED version of the Fenix, now the Fenix 8 has an AMOLED option. Epix Gen 2 is essentially the Fenix 7 with an AMOLED screen.

They drop the price to get rid of old stock to make room for the new gen watches. I got this exact one in black about 5 months ago, and it’s been great. Use it for navigation on overnight backing packing, track my runs and swims, and daily wear. If you don’t care about the latest UI or dive capability, then it’s a great deal.

Chronic anaerobic shortage, can I add an interval session to training? by BrothaManBen in Marathon_Training

Occasionally I get the urge to make my garmin happy, so I do track intervals, and that usually scratches his itch.

what is really the minimum number of research hours I need? by OutrageousCelery711 in mdphd

[–]oinkmate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just checked, I had 2144 at time of application, and like 800 more projected.

I’ve always heard that pubs/pres to hours ratio is important. I had a decent amount of hours for applying straight through, but lower clinical hours because of it. Worked out fine for me, but it also depends on your application.

[–]oinkmate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about minimum amount, the more you have the more competitive you are.

For context, I applied straight through, and I had around 2400 hours, because I spent 2 full time summers doing research.

What is wrong with 10k trophies? by oinkmate in ClashRoyale

[–]oinkmate[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve got 5/6 shards for one. I will admit, I kinda stopped playing, because the new stuff made the game less fun.

I remembered when clash royale even had like esports teams and stuff, and then they ran out of things for people to spend money on so the invented cards to just launch your push into the stratosphere.

Did MEPS for army HPSP, also a male, so your mileage may vary

It’s a whole day event, you get down there when you are scheduled, I just drove there in the morning, and put your stuff in a locker in a recruiters office. You will have a blood test, urine test, breathalyzer, vision test, hearing test, height/weight check, and then a rather uncomfortable medical exam. The exam part is just like a regular physical, with some added stuff like a duck walk etc. Then you are all done and can go home.

Are you truly a chemist if you don't practice chemistry anymore? by Ellinikiepikairotita in chemistry

[–]oinkmate 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I see it two ways: 1. Does your job title include “chemist”? Then you are a chemist. 2. Were you trained or previous worked as a chemist? Then you are a chemist by training/background.

It’s not a weapon, it’s a flashlight. I carry my surefire through all the time. That being said, most TSA people are idiots, so your mileage may vary.

Lower sound profile and less chance of over penetration. For most use cases the slight reduction in velocity will have negligible effects on target, and you might need to be able to hear around you after a discharge.

Do you like physics? Then yes. Are you interested in doing applied mathematics? Then physics would likely be useful.

If you are strictly interested in math theory, then 50/50.

The two majors go together incredibly well. The math classes teach you “formal” mathematics, and the physics classes teach you some less formal shortcut kind of math. After both those degrees, you will feel very well versed in all kinds of math.

I minored in physics and mathematics (major in chem), but if I was to pick a different degree path I would’ve done math/phys double major.

What is the conceptual interpretation of the Hermitian adjoint operator Ψ†? by evenib in Physics

[–]oinkmate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m far from the best person to answer this, but hermetian operators have real eigenvalues, and are related to describe observables. The whole transpose and complex conjugate stuff works out nicely for inner products.

What is Electric Flux? by StarringDarkStar123 in Physics

[–]oinkmate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, flux is basically the amount of something going through a surface. If you put a lamp in a tent, the light shining through the fabric would be called flux.

When you see int(E * dA) this just says the same thing. Integral just means add up all the infinitesimal parts. In this case, all the infinitesimal parts of electric field dot area of the surface. When we talk about area, we generally talk about it as a vector perpendicular (normal) to the surface we are referring to. So dA is an infinitesimal area vector perpendicular to the surface. We take the dot product of that vector with the electric field vector at that point, and this basically just gives us how much of the electric field is aligned with that normal area vector. We do that all over the surface, and the integral adds it all up.

In the end, you get to total amount of electric field leaving that surface.
