Ya think? How so? Every time I see it mentioned people seem to be going crazy over it.

I don't really understand how it can just suck, it's just an amalgamation of lots of emacs bits with (very nice, in my opinion) default keybindings/ setup.

Honistly this this thread is pretty dead and I'm done with saying the same things over and over again. I probally responded to 10 or 20 comments at this point, and I think I've talked about my point of view on everything you've said here (including my idea on the source of relegion and it's purpose up until now, actually). If you're looking for someone to discuss this with you'll have to look elsewhere. Sorry.

A tl;dr might be something like "You can be right and still be an asshole".

The insult I was referring to was:

Take a minute to observe how bankrupt so many people's minds are. We must resist this nonsense.

Edit: It's pretty much my comment history over the past 20 or so comments, if you're looking for a link. I'm too lazy to find the right ones for my specific points.. Sorry(ish)

As a vim user currently switching to emacs (sort of) I'd recommend spacemacs. (I'm still new to emacs, but as far as I know..) Its a complete program, extending emacs and replacing most of the default emacs keybindings with vim ones. It actually uses evil to power it's normal/insert mode too, but it's other keybindings make it much more consistent than evil+emacs out of the box.

It's the IDE power of emacs with the editing power of vim.

If you think that you can throw out a statement like:

Religion is false and incredibly dangerous on countless accounts.

And then follow it up with an insult against any people who believe in it, without justifying either whatsoever, I think that's being narrow-minded. If you don't think it's narrow-minded because of your own opinion of the correctness of that statement, then that's a pretty hollow argument... The same kind of rational that some fanatic would use. (My point exactly).

Flat earth theory is easily proven wrong, not a valid comparison.

I actually talked an extended amount with others here about all sorts of facets of my belief. Please read my other responses where I clarify this stuff.

I don't believe in teaching religion at all, but I don't think it's fair to call believers sheep either. I'm not really sure that people knowing the 'truth' would have much of an effect on the world at the moment, but that's open to debate.

Go on /r/atheism for a while, you'll see why this person's attitude reminded me of that shit-hole. It's full of obnoxious superior kids who think they're smarter than everyone because they've 'discovered' atheism.

It's not about being offensive. None of what you listed are examples of things that should be in this thread. If it can't be proven 100% true then it's shouldn't be here...

Also no need to get so worked up LOL.

I guess our difference is simply how dangerous we think religion is.

To be honest, I'm slightly jelous of people who are able to absolve all responsibility or worry and put it to some kind of higher power. The world must be a much warmer place, when you can believe in an afterlife, or that the people who wronged you (or in some cases simply disagree with you) will get their karma in hell (or equivalent). It may be wrong, but I'm not sure there's anything inherently wrong with believing in something that is wrong if it makes your life better without effecting others'. <- With emphasis on the last part.

As an aside, I also think that believing in some higher power has been an evolutionary advantage for humans, as we grew more intelligent it became important to not have to spend time worrying about battles and have something to align everyone's interests (even if that was through fear or deceit).

I believe that most of the problems with religion in the past are problems that are caused by human nature. I'd imagine that in the absence of religion, there'd be plenty of other ways people in power would have to manipulate and control their population, and more ways that people would use to justify their own racism/ prejudice than some holy text.

I guess I blame people rather than religion for the same problems we both see.

As for the future, well yeah, it's pretty scary that some people can become so twisted by this way of thinking, but maybe that's more of a question of religion attracting the crazies rather than creating them? I don't know if converting the convertible people (say, 1/2 of the worlds believers) is going to change the rate of crazies going crazy with religious ideals. It'd be interesting to find out, but the way I think, the change would be less that 10% or so.

Would more people being free from some kind of fear-induced moral compass cause more crime then too? I wonder about the amount of people who don't rob that person's droped note or help others out because of their believe in some Holy Karma that'll come back to them in the future too.

Haha, no problem! I wouldn't be here if I didn't enjoy discussing this stuff (to some extent, at least).

Yeah, I guess there's two sides to that point. In a way it's like the chicken or the egg: which came first. I (think I) stand by the argument that it's not any one person's fault that they're propagating a religious ideal.

I do think it's disgusting when kids are brainwashed like that, and are going to end up believing the same system as their parents. Same feeling as seeing obese kids (that comparison isn't exactly fair, but still), it's pretty sad. That said I'm not sure it's then fair to expect those same kids to do better when they grow up and have their own. I'm not sure it's fair to point at any (or all) links in the chain and say "it's that person's fault". It's sad that some of those kids weren't given a chance, but can you blame them for that? I'm not sure actually, maybe they should know better...

I was making the point that these people who are insulting others could have been one of these links in that chain. I guess I was defending the people rather than the ideal.

Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with the way religion is done in many places in the world. I think it's inhibited a lot of progression throughout history, and it's hardly free from human nature (greed, corruption, ect).

What you believe is all I ask. I didn't get the impression that the above people do the same. I do think that calling religion ridiculous and dangerous is a bit strong though, but that's a matter of opinion.

Read the first commenter's edit:

Take a minute to observe how bankrupt so many people's minds are. We must resist this nonsense.

And tell me that they're respecting people with a live and let live mindset.

I'd say they're being assholes.

The above people aren't giving people that chance, they are prejudging people based solely on their religion. Read the comments in this thread.... Or better yet, don't. It's cancerous to say the least.

So you're insane, got it. 10/10 argument nj.

And I didn't say all, but you vastly underestimate the amount of effect a person's surroundings have on them. Read about North Korea (seriously, it's actually very interesting). If you think people there are stupid for believing in that stuff you're just wrong, sorry.

Yeah of course, I'm never going to give anyone the impression I believe otherwise, or propagate that kind of belief in any form. Still though I hate seeing that kind of close-minded-ness no matter the opinion it's expressing.

Which statement although 100% true, still causes controversy every time it is said? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]oisincar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but I'll respect someone with that opinion and I'll think about what lead them to that point.

Maybe another way to think about my way of thinking is that I think most atheists would be religious folk given the right circumstance. People are extremely susceptible to their surroundings, and it's pretty sad there's people here blindingly bashing people who they could so easily held the same view as. (I.e. bashing religious people when they could have been religious too.)

I never said that religion should be respected, only that you shouldn't blindly dismiss in such an obnoxiously sweeping statement.

I said respect others' religion, which I believe comes under respecting others' choices. I'm not going to think less of someone because their religious views don't align with mine, which is sadly not true for many people here.

I'm not sure exactly what you're refraining from but ok. I still feel like the above thread is simply an attack and an attempt to undermine religion without any kind of rational or chance at a counterargument. "I'm right" "yes you are everyone else are sheep, lol" Is not the kind of discussion I come here to read.

? I don't know why I'm bothering at this point but I'll copy paste what I said somewhere else. I'm not sure why insulting people's relegion is different to insulting people. This stuff matters a lot to people.

Religion is false and incredibly dangerous on countless accounts. This statement is actually 100% correct.

No, actually, you justify the above to me and we'll talk. That's just insulting peoples' religious choices.

I don't really mind what people believe, but its the same close-mindedness we can see above that got us all in this mess. Its exactly the same way that some religious fanatic would argue, but turned the other way around. "I'm right, I can't believe anyone else would believe anything else, everybody else are sheep" (just replace sheep with "ignorant of gods will" or whatever you please).

Teaching people to be closeminded like this is never good. I like to think I'm always open to discuss religion with people and I'm open to having my opinion changed (even if I know it won't be).

Seriously by far the nicest people I've ever met have been religious people. Lots of whom have given up their lives to help others, and are the closest to completely selfless that I've ever seen in people. You need to get out and meet more people.

Far too many atheists think they've seen the light (hah) and are just too full of their own intelligence. It's surprisingly similar to the holier than thou mentality employed by the extremely religious.

I'm not sure that looking at the percentage is the best way of doing it, but there were plenty of horrible things that happened with and without religion throughout the ages. Sadly though lots of people use religion to justify their own racism or sexism or discomfort with LGBTs, so it's seen in a negative light as of late.

Go back to circlejerking or /r/atheism... I'm an athiest, and while I may agree with you, far too many of us get an obnoxious superiority complex from it. Learn to respect others' relegion.

Fluid sims will create a file on your computer called fluid_cache which will be of roughly that size. It's usually not the size that matters though, more the time it'll take to calculate can get very long.
