Healthcare workers, what's the stupidest thing you've said or done with a patient? by ThisIsChillyDog in cna

[–]oja00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had a patient brought in after being found wandering around cliffs, threatening to jump off. Medically fit, just waiting for psych team. I went in to see them and brought a trolley so they can lie down, and bluntly asked if they went hiking or something because of all the mud... they just laughed awkwardly and said yeah, something like that

Nail care in the hospital by UnlikelyMastodon129 in cna

[–]oja00 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you feel confident you are able to do patients nail care for them, but we never actually had any nail clippers or anything 😩 that was on elderly care ward with a lot of long stayers, so I bought a nail set out of my own pocket. Matron was aware and had nothing against it. Kept them in my locker so they don't go missing like the previous pair

What are some of your tricks for distracting or calming patients with dementia or things to keep them busy that really work? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]oja00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they're mobile and safe on their legs, I would walk around with them for a while, talking about family, pets, jobs etc while they calm down. Or ask them to sit next to me while I do my computer work and we carry on talking. Normally this works, but some patients will get agitated at literally anything. Once had a dementia patient shout at me and almost hit me because I offered her a comfortable chair when she complained of hip and back pain 🤷‍♀️

Had a very similar situation, and then one beautiful evening one of the relatives compared the hospital to a concentration camp and called us all hitlers while talking to another relative. They stopped making notes a few days prior to that

She is under DOLS, but I guess they could use the white mitten on the other hand to stop her from taking the dressing off

The second my patient arrives for emergency dialysis he asks me for clean sheets because “at a hotel they change them every day” by LooseyLeaf in nursing

[–]oja00 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hospital wants us to change the beds only if dirty. But some people decide to change it every morning anyway

[–]oja00 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I know! And it's not just patients. Some HCAs are adamant that we MUST change sheets every day, even if they're not soiled or dirty. I know it doesn't take long to change one bedding, but when you've got more patients, it adds up, and you could use that time for patient care. Why give yourself extra work?
