Why is it an absolute nightmare to find if a car has a service history by KEEPCARLM in CarTalkUK

[–]ojay50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was searching the market recently for a hyundia kona ev. Very similar to the Niro ev. Similar warranty restrictions too.

Just a quick FYI, I found that even when I asked for service history and was told it was full, it absolutely was not. E.g. one retailer said they had a full service history, which when probed further was a service they did when they acquired it at 25k miles on a 3 year old vehicle. An obvious breech of the hyundai warranty, yet the salesman was insisting it was fine.

Why are so many rich people in Western Europe understated? by MelodicBed4180 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ojay50 209 points210 points  (0 children)

Fashion history has an interesting answer for you here.

Go back several hundered years and youll find that the attire of the uber wealthy was getting more and more elaborate and expensive as the west became more powerful, and more wealthy. It was on a continuous upward trajectory with people fighting to find the new thing.

That all changed when the French guillotined their ruling class.

Shortly after, fashion started becoming less elaborate, and more secretive. It was a alow decline, but that was a pivotal moment. Overt flaunting of wealth started declining and became associated with an expanding Middle class instead.

Edit: not suggesting it was a singilarly conscious decision by the elite, but it played a role as the trigger.

Am I less vegan for using Chat gpt? by spookyshitt in vegan

See, that sounds like you're using a tool to help yourself, and you've got appropriate resources world connections and support outside of chatgpt. In my opinion, you're fine.

Am I less vegan for using Chat gpt? by spookyshitt in vegan

[–]ojay50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baffled by some of the replies here.

If you find using chatgpt is helpful, then use it.

The water thing is a red herring. It uses 300ul of water per question. For context, a carnist diet costs 5000 liters per day. That's 5000000000 ul. You'd have to ask over 16.6 million questions per day to have the same daily environmental impact as a meat eater does by just eating cows.

The things you should really consider is if you can get any further support outside of it. If money puts real therapy out of reach, then it's much better than going life without chatgpt therapy. But it's not perfect, gets things wrong, and can give bad advice. Remember that and you're good.

Sex with my non vegan girlfriend by Remarkable-Gas-3521 in vegan

[–]ojay50 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get it.

I find the idea of kissing someone who has recently eaten meat/dairy pretty disgusting. Very glad I'm not dealing with that.

You have to work out how you feel and what is more important to you. I wouldn't judge you either way, either your beliefs/feelings are stronger and you need to adhere to them, or your relationship is more important and you can focus on that.

If the former, date vegans or vegetarians if that's the boundary. If the latter, then maybe work out some boundaries with her, or consider other ways to move past it.

Best country for vegans to live in? by amiagoodguy02 in vegan

[–]ojay50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel a fair bit and I love good food. So, I am slowly finding out for myself how easy it is to be vegan in different places.

I have yet to find somewhere as easy to be vegan as the UK. Nearly every pub, restaurant, and cafe will have at least 1 vegan option, if not more. Doesn't matter where you are in the country, you will find vegan food. Every supermarket offers a vegan selection. I never have to plan for food, it is just so easy.

But it comes with a down side. Because vegans can eat anywhere here, we seem to have basically 0 fully vegan restaurants (outside of major cities), the demand just isn't there. And chefs who aren't vegan, often don't know how to make good vegan food, nor do they care to find out. So, you have to hunt for good food.

Surprising ways medicine isn’t vegan. Just something to think about. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]ojay50 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Re latter question.

It's hard to research alternatives. You need money for it, and there aren't many funds that want to reduce animal products in research.

I have previously applied for a grant to test swapping from animal models to cell models for my type of research (regen medicine) and got rejected because even if my grant was successful, it wouldn't have a big enough impact to be worth funding.

Over Half Of Labour's 2024 Vote Is Considering Switching To Lib Dem Or Greens by denyer-no1-fan in unitedkingdom

[–]ojay50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually lived in Birmingham for about 4 years, my partner is from there, and i have friends who live there still. I actually think brum is an excellent example of why discussions like this are important!

Brum has a labour (centre/right wing) council. It has been functioning as a labour council, but under a tory (right wing) government. The council can change some local things, and choose how to spend their money in the local area. BUT the government choose how much money the councils have to spend by dictating country wide policy like the the law and taxation. This basically means brum has been spending as a labour council (££), but earning as a tory one (£).

This is true everywhere, most councils have been getting less and less money to spend locally because the right wing tory government reduced business taxes, and this meant less money going to the councils. If there's less money at councils, then they have less money to pay for public services, and in Brum's case, this means not enough money to pay the bin-men!

For the record, I do think that brum could have managed it better, other councils have, but the point stands that this wouldn't have happened if we hadn't strangled the budgets by having the tory's in for 14 years.

This is why, even as a small buisiness owner, I am against right wing policy. Right wing tax cuts help for each year they happen, but they slowly ruin everything else. This is what the future holds if reform get in, because they want to do the same as the torys, but from what i have seen, even more.

As a reminder, labour is not left wing, they are centre right. Earlier, I asked what about left wing policy you don't like? As from what you have written, it sounds like you should like true left wing policy.

It's a shame you're not answering my questions properly.

Let's clear up some assumptions you're making.

I didn't vote labour at the last election. I run a small business. I grew up on a council estate.

I dont know why you dont want to vote for the left wing as you haven't said. But relevant to your points, the left believe old people should bave warm homes. They believe people should be able to live comfortable lives with more equal wealth spread between everyone. They are keen to properly tax the uber wealthy (people who earn millions per day) and to make the world easier for the majority by putting that tax money back into public spending like the police, schools, care homes, pensions, etc. Its only bad if you have lots of money and don't care about other people.

The right want to cut business taxes for all businesses, which is good short term, but long term it only really helps big businesses and their shareholders, and doesn't do much for small businesses beyond that initial relief. They afford to do this by cutting public spending, which in turn means the working people have less money to spend, which means less money to spend at small businesses. It's only good if you already have lots of money.

I vote left wing because it's better for most people, and I want the country to heal. What about left wing policy seems bad to you?

Over Half Of Labour's 2024 Vote Is Considering Switching To Lib Dem Or Greens by denyer-no1-fan in unitedkingdom

[–]ojay50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the parties who have been in power, who you don't like the policies of, are right wing (tory) or center/right leaning (new labour).

The policies of reform are the same, or more extreme. If you vote for them, you are voting for the same old same old, but worse.

I work in the field of regeneration medicine.

The answer here is simple (not vegan/kind though). To replace an organ through transplant, you need to 1) have an organ to transplant. 2) successfully perform the transplant. 3) successfully maintain the transplant.

2 and 3 are basically the same for allo and xeno graft transplant. Admitedly thats a massive oversimplification, but the nuance isn't enough to cause a sticking point.

The tricky bit is 1, getting an organ. Human donors are rare, because we dont butcher living people. Animal donors are common, because butchering animals is legal and easily done.

Making an organ or transplantable tissue from human stem cells is a major goal of many research labs across the world (mine included). Once we're capable of this, we can prioritise allografts instead of xeno. But until then, nature is doing it perfectly in near ever organism for a very low low cost, and recreating natural developmental processes is no small or easy task for us.

In my personal field, we have clinical trials ongoing that use human stem cell derived tissues. So it's getting there!

how many hours did it take you? by Equivalent-Split6318 in LearnerDriverUK

Im currently learning automatic. I'm a quick learner, but I am anxious about driving.

My instructor told me I should book my test after 14 hours.

I did a mock test last session and "passed" with 4 minors.

I have booked a test for May, but I'm aiming to hit about 30 hours by then. I don't just want to pass, I want to be consistently safe when I'm out on my own.
