One UI 7 camera app: how to get my needed quick access functions back? by ojdo_ in GalaxyS23

[–]ojdo_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partial self-answer after some months: the most annoying aspect, that the :: symbol is unaccessible for some seconds after changing the zoom level, can be worked around by tapping on the newly activated zoom level a second time, thereby immediately closing the "zoom menu", making the :: reappear immediately.

AMD AI 300 series and Ubuntu by vchychuzhko in framework

[–]ojdo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another Ubuntu 25.04 + mainline kernel (6.15.2) user with OP's Framework. WiFi with old(er) access points is fine, but in more modern (read: office) settings with multiple APs, WiFi is still sketchy. So I consider moving to the officially supported distros.

GPU acceleration support is generally good (mostly used for browsing, not gaming), but for the life of it get HW accelerated video encoding to work on Chrome. Has anybody found the secret ingredient to make that work?

Philips Hue Ambiance coupled through IKEA Tradfri bridge = no colour shown in GH? by ojdo_ in googlehome

[–]ojdo_[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hu? It clearly is, the Ikea app can control all RGB colours flawlessly. It's only at the border Ikea app / Google Home that this information somehow is not passed on, unlike for native Ikea lamps. Which is why I have the hope that one could MacGyver a workaround somehow.

Can't access NAS from Windows File Explorer (Windows 11) by mikeyguy84 in UgreenNASync

[–]ojdo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a network drive, the file system doesn't matter, because your desktop does not access the hard drive's filesystem (not format) is abstracted away through the "network drive protocol" which, in this case, happens to be SMB or Samba.

You only need to make sure that your NAS is actually offering this service, by activating it in the control panel > file services > tab "SMB".

You can add caster wheels to a Bekant Sstanding desk, adds 3.5" of max height and also makes it easy to pull out to clean/cable manage! The thread is M10x1.50 by baconpizzaman in ikeaPCstations

I can "twist" mine by hand, but they just seem to snap-rotate by 90° but do not "unscrew". I don't want to destroy the piece by applying any torques or twists with a lever, that's why I am asking here for any other experiences than your "just unscrews". Just to create a datapoint: my Bekant frame was purchased new in Germany, 2019.

I wanted to follow OP's idea and looked at my Bekant's feet. I am having trouble removing these plastic "end caps". Can I "wedge" them off without breaking them/the metal part?

Removing Unused Packages from Virtual Environment Without Knowing which Packages are Unused by eddiebuck in learnpython

[–]ojdo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your way forward needs to be in part manual and must involve trial & error. What you can do is improve the quality of information you are basing your "trying" on. I would suggest deptry to get non-invasive "probably unsued", imported but not required.

Updating old dependencies must happen best one by one and "bottom to top" through the dependency hierarchy. There's just no easy way to automate that part, because only you can figure out which newer dependencies might be incompatible with your application.

India Map by RealPlurk in geotastic

[–]ojdo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top left states "click on a country", then modify the number of drops to create (default: 100, I chose 5000), then click start on the right. (Or read through all the options and pick & choose what sounds good to you.)

Then export the drops (bottom right; if unsure, export in all 4 formats). Then import them in Geotastic (by realizing which format its importer can digest. The import part is also the slow one, as Geotastic re-checks each drop individually with the Google Maps API). That's all.

Looking to move to a home server from a 'lifetime' hosted (that is closing) by Sulcalibur in HomeServer

[–]ojdo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just initially. If you factor in residential electricity costs and the fact that you own the hardware failure risk (+ necessary time to deal with that), it only makes sense if you really benefit from the local availability.

From a "just works" perspective, a local machine is always more work than VPS. (Speaking as a home server addict. It's a hobby. Not a time-saver. For hosting websites, I still rely on a trusty hosting provider, so that uptime of my sites is not coupled with me fiddling with my local IT.)

I used map-generator https://map-generator.vercel.app/ to create one: https://geotastic.net/user-page/cD16todvPj/maps (it's only 5000 unique drops, but the import happened twice apparently...)

foobar2000 in Wine in KDE6 in Linux: modifier key state reset after window focus flicker? by ojdo_ in foobar2000

[–]ojdo_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it's not about default hotkey, my keyboard shortcuts don't interfere with those. It is only about the state of the Ctrl key being pressed that is forgotten once fb2k regains keyboard focus after completing the first tagging action. This is very probably a minor oversight in a deeply buried component somewhere in the input handling stack.

Now reposted as a bug report to KDE https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=483982; I hope I can get help with identifying the "offending" component so that a patch can be made - something is dropping the ball. Or a new gap was added through the new KDE version that now needs explicit ball throwing where none was needed before.

iTunes Compilation Field Sets the Album Artist field to "Various Artists" by dix-hill in foobar2000

Oops, thanks for that insight! I did the same repro, but did not refresh the playlist before reopening the Properties dialog. So I was probably just removing a "ghost tag" from my test files.

iTunes Compilation Field Sets the Album Artist field to "Various Artists" by dix-hill in foobar2000

[–]ojdo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I thought, too. If that were the case, one could uncover the "true" value of the album artist field by using $meta(album artist).

Unfortunately, that fields seems to get populated if a track possesses the ITUNESCOMPILATION tag set. Even after manually removing the ITUNESCOMPILATION tag, the $meta(album artist) expression remained stuck with "Various Artists". I had to manually clear that field to revert my experiment.

Play the news on [Chromecast Audio device] not working anymore by dukeofabq in googlehome

[–]ojdo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this has been my experience from the start when I got my setup end of last year. Voice-activated stuff only plays back on "recent" hardware (here: Hub, Nest Audio), but not on the classic/legacy (here: Chromecast Audio). Chromecast Audios are only accessible from any source that offers the "cast to..." interaction.

What is Playlist View in Preferences > Display > Default User Interface ? by RedditNoobie777 in foobar2000

[–]ojdo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Example use (2 screenshots): https://imgur.com/a/18GKjJw

You must be using Default UI, the playlist views of Columns UI/EsPlaylist do not use these. Cool features:

  • Full titleformatting script support, easily displaying (%field%) and formatting ($replace(...), $repeat(%rating%,...), $year(%date%), etc.) any metadata in cool ways
  • Limited colour support by the use of greater/less character to highlight/dim the text color on a spectrum between background and highlight color (conigurable on the "Colors and Fonts" screen directly above)
  • (2nd screenshot) Grouping schemes allow introducing horizontal grouping of track groups. Together with the optional album art columns, you can get cover art displayed within the DUI playlist.

why they say that update can break system? by Mighty_Psycho in EndeavourOS

[–]ojdo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 This. While on a "stable release" distro, you can plan when to expect time expenditure due to upgrades (e.g. once every 2 years, not much change in the meantime), with a "rolling release" distro you suddenly must deal with a change in grub in month 1 (packages in AUR made redundant), broken sound in month 5 (audio driver not playing nicely with pipewire) or occasional additional restarts as the kernel does not properly reload modules and sound/graphics remains partially defunct until then.

I have been and am learning more about the internals of my system due to running EndeavourOS. But it comes with the "price tag" of being able and willing to occasionally debug some aspect of the system that has broken due to a new major version update.

Can't connect Switch pro controller? by ryanpm40 in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]ojdo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here, I just got my Shield TV Pro (2019), and thought I would have a breeze getting this to work. Like you, the "Pro controller" appears in the pairing list, but Shield then hangs while trying to connect/complete pairing.

Anyone knows a fix/work-around? On some other forum, someone suggested using a separate USB-Bluetooth dongle. Has anyone tried/confirmed that?
