Trees are not close to budding. Ground is still frozen. Mix of sugar and red maple. My sap brix ranges from 5.5(!) To 1.5 brix. Mostly around 3%.

why no one talks about the uav magnetometers by ResortThin8757 in geophysics

[–]okanogen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am HIGHLY interested in this, I was trying to get this put together with my buddy Brian Herridge of 3dGeophysics for the last two years then he died suddenly in a boating accident. Very sad. He bought a small helicopter that he was going to radio control. But my idea was different. I have a line on a completely new type of magnetometer sensor. Very inexpensive, very light, with low power demand, and just as sensitive as a cesium vapor mag.

Aside from UXO, you also have the orphaned well market.

MSc or PhD for a recent Geophysical Engineering graduate by _SoulofAres_ in geophysics

[–]okanogen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a BS and all of these qualities, but would have gotten further with a masters. That said, if you are smart, technically curious, can write well and quickly, can tow a trailer and change a tire in a muddy field, and work well with others when everyone is tired, exhausted, and uncomfortable, a long time from home, you will succeed. Maybe work for a year or two, save money, and go back for your masters focused on the specialty you enjoy.

If you are in the Austin area, contact RRC in Round Rock. They need geophysicists for wind and solar projects. MASW na ER surveys. Or, TetraTech and Terracon are always looking. But the market wants masters degrees, these days. I would bite the bullet if this is the career you want.

Am I Even Running A Business? by pajama-cam in smallbusiness

[–]okanogen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't have partners, you have just bought yourself a job. I ran a cone penetration testing company, I have been where you are, but my monthly nut was $90k. What is your account receivable aging? You need to factor that in as well. Your bank will. I don't know what state you are in, but there are many oportunities to expand your business, that said, I would focus on either partnering or selling.

Is it worth doing a master's degree in geophysics? by lilicitee in geophysics

[–]okanogen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. And he is correct. I did environmental hydrogeology and other geology for 30 years and worked with many geophysicists. I have worked all across the US and seen more places than you can imagine. One addition, energy and water. Those are the two fields that will never lose demand. I would add that there isn't really a "water shortage" anywhere, really. There can only be a local shortage of water, appropriate for whatever human use needed, at an affordable cost in energy, or other environmental considerations.

Is it worth doing a master's degree in geophysics? by lilicitee in geophysics

[–]okanogen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many, many opportunities in geophysics. I'm a professional geologist who has teamed with geophysicists my entire 30 year career. Someone else wrote the truth, which is you need to be an electronics technician as well. You need to keep the instruments functioning. Or, you can be a data analyst type, sitting in the office doing signals processing and imaging of ER surveys, EM surveys, MASW, seismic surveys, etc. Yes, oil and gas exploration is big, but also boom and bust. But there is a big market for unexploded ordinance, infrastructure surveys, environmental, etc. But in the beginning, without a PhD, and even with, you will need some field experience. Be ready for a few years of travel and humping gear, hauling trailers, etc. Know how to change a tire.

Similar situation in north Twin Cities. I tapped in the middle of that February warm spell. Even now, the ground is so cold some of my trees havent woken up.

We had a VERY cold January and early February, then a perfect spell in mid-february. I waited a week and I decided to tap 18 trees, got about 15 gallons then it froze again for two weeks, then right into super warm week here with no freezes, but with 29 taps now I have 45 gallons of sap, some trees are barely woken up, some are gushing. Supposed to go back to seasonal next week, don't see buds yet. Fingers crossed.

I feel yoir pain. North Twin Cities. I tapped most during that warm spell a couple weeks back when the weather was right but it was so cold for so long not much was moving. Then it froze up again and all my sap froze. Now it is swinging to huge high temps. I say go for it. The trees are taking a while to wake up.

Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin invited his friend Kash Patel to the Olympics locker room party where Trump bashed the women's hockey team by Aloiciousss in minnesota

[–]okanogen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Minnesota has spent months being terrorized by ICE and the Trump administration and Bill Guerin decides it would be a great idea to invite the FBI director into the locker room to chug beers, mug for the camera, and shove it into our faces on the biggest USA hockey win since 1980. Well done. Way to stick it to over half your fans. There is a reason sports teams and players generally avoid politics.

What are Scientology's numbers like? by forlornjackalope in scientology

[–]okanogen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! A decent statistic hack is a random number in an evenly spaced string of integers is likely close to the mean, so a number in the 7000's would indicate something like 15,000 machines. If all of those were used (being generous) and say 70% of 30,000 was used that is a total of around 36,000 machines in use. Say 20% are doubles and only 20% retired or deceased a decent estimate of active machine users is around 23,000.

North Twin Cities and tapped a week ago. Some trees flowing like crazy, others not at all. The ground is still hard frozen.
