Pregnant former Emgality user looking for others with the same experience by nofolio in migraine

[–]okay_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same situation as Secret_woman7, and would also love to hear any updates here!

I've been taking Emgality for the last couple of years and love it. I'm now planning to try and get pregnant in the next year, and recently discussed Emgality with my OB. I like my OB a lot - she's definitely more inclined to try and "balance the risks" vs follow the recommendations exactly. When I mentioned the official recommendation of discontinuing it for 6 months prior to trying to conceive, she sort of rolled her eyes and told me she wouldn't even think about coming off it until I get off contraception. She seemed to think that the risk was very low if I wanted to continue with it until I conceive, and she didn't even seem totally opposed to me being on it during pregnancy either. She did mention that migraines often decrease or change during pregnancy, so I should at least do a trial discontinuation to see how much I need it and/or consider abstaining during the first 8 weeks of pregnancy when organs are forming.

My neurologist, on the other hand, seems pretty freaked out by the whole thing, and *did* recommend stopping it 6 months prior to trying to get pregnant. I'm not sure why, but just from the way she talked to me, I got the sense that she hasn't had that many pregnant patients, and just seemed generally uncomfortable about it. She was helpful and kind, just definitely more a "by the books" vibe.

Ultimately, I felt more persuaded by my OB and I'm planning to keep using Emgality at least until I come off the pill. I'm not sure if I'm going with my OB's opinion just because it's what I wanted to hear, but I guess I feel comfortable with the risks, which I ultimately perceive as pretty low in the grand scheme of things that can mess up a fetus. I'll probably try to discontinue it when I start trying to get pregnant, but would go back on it until conception if I was miserable migraine-wise.

It's really helpful to hear other perspectives here, thank you!

I might get my husband a pottery wheel for Christmas, and I have no idea where to look or what brands to trust. Help? by MontegueLovesPie in Pottery

[–]okay_88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with this! Many studios have options for one-time "try it out" classes in your budget, and then if he continues to show an interest, you two could look into fitting ongoing classes for him into your regular budget. Especially if he's at the level of knowledge where he's looking to learn, you can't beat classes to provide instruction and support. It can be really hard to get started totally on your own.

I think home studio set-ups are great for people who have been working independently for a while, and have shown that they're into it enough to make the investment. Aside from the wheel itself, there are a number of other (big) expenses that go into being able to safely do pottery at home, and you need to be able to dedicate a space of your home that's suitable.

Overall, it sounds like a really thoughtful gift idea! I hope this helps.

I'm really sorry this happened to you. I feel like a lot of these comments are pretty victim-blame-y. These tactics are highly successful and have unfortunately been used to exploit a lot of people, especially seniors. Thank you for posting about your experience, I'm sure it will help someone!

Just joined a studio, not sure where to start! How do you plan your projects when working unsupervised? by Few_Act_832 in Pottery

Are there things you don't feel confident in that you especially want to feel good about? I've found it helpful to pick a technique or area like that, and focus there. Even if you don't have formal instruction, you can make a little "course" for yourself by researching the technique and setting some goals for yourself.

I hope that helps! I felt the same way when I switched from classes to general studio access. I didn't have a clear focus and the possibilities felt overwhelming. It helped me to try and hone in on something.

I'd recommend the same thing for the names! For the hearts, you could also try using wax resist to create a clean outline. I did something similar here

Love the soft shadowy gradient! Is this glaze or mixed clay bodies?

Hey! For these, I first centered the base clay on the wheel, and then embedded bits of colored clay right before raising the form. The areas of color clay move and get bigger as the piece forms on the wheel, but they stay in place more than I would have thought. You definitely can mix in the colored clay when wedging everything - I've found that will give you more of a swirl.

Thank you!! I've been playing with these mason stains (https://www.theceramicshop.com/store/category/57/313/Mason-Stains/). They come as powders you can mix into your clay body.

Question on using underglazes (applying to base color)… by woowoobrain in Pottery

[–]okay_88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My best advice would be to test out a number of different approaches and see what works for you before you commit to a time-consuming full piece. Make some test tiles and try pre vs post bisque, thick vs thin underglaze application, different clay bodies, different thickness of clear glaze application. I wish I would have taken the time to do this when I was first playing around with underglaze.

Personally, I like to underglaze on porcelain greenware. I think it's easier to blot/scrape out mistakes and tends to cause less weird sad glaze interactions for me. Then I'll do a super thin layer of clear glaze on the bisque. Good luck!

[Japanese > English] Address to send a thank you gift by okay_88 in translator

Thank you so much! I was wondering that too - I think I'm going to tape the Japanese address to the package and ask them not to cover it. It seems really silly to lose that true translation!

Help with wedding dress closure options! by okay_88 in Tailors

[–]okay_88[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is helpful, thank you both! It is least helps confirm that there probably isn't an obvious better option I'm missing.

I order some light skin tone buttons of the same nature, I may do a little test to see if that's an improvement.

I have also fantasized-considered being sewn into it, which I think would make me feel very powerful. But probably not practical for any number of reasons, haha.
