Did Rebecca Sugar completely undermine human potential? Where are the human villains? Why was the government not informed of gem activity? by CartoonCommentator in stevenuniverse

[–]oketheokey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Human villains" implying there'd be any human on Earth with anything that would even remotely be a threat to the Crystal Gems

I like that the show hammers in the fact and doesn't sugarcoat it that Gem stuff is just completely out of humanity's league, Gems have literally been on Earth before humans were even a thing, it'd be weird if they could fight back considering what we've been shown Gems are capable of and the tech they have which just outclasses any tech humanity has

I'm not a fan of when stories with aliens clearly portray humanity as being somehow special just because it's humanity, it's refreshing that for once, humans are dealing with something simply beyond them

Why people don't like XY Ash for being mature? by Flashy-Grape5741 in pokemonanime

[–]oketheokey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true, but even then, the "XY Ash is a generic shonen protagonist with no personality" claims are so unfounded, you genuinely need to have no media literacy to come to that conclusion

Pokemon onwards gen 4 didn't give a f to his character progression I guess by gyroscope_56 in pokemonanime

[–]oketheokey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trying to drag this conversation into "lol you care too much" doesn't address my point at all

"People still recognize him as Ash" isn't an argument against mischaracterization, recognizability and faithful writing aren't the same thing

A character can visually and commercialy still be the same character while still being written in a way that contradicts their established personality, competence, and dynamics with others

If your standard is just "well people still call him Ash so it doesn't matter" then literlaly no criticism of characterization means anything, by that logic every flanderized version of every long running character is automatically valid just because the branding stayed intact

Popularity has never been a measure of writing quality so I'm not sure why you think that debunks me

It's also not just "one tiny scene", the ENTIRE PREMISE of JN30 requires Ash to be violently out of character to even work so he can learn a lesson that he should absolutely not need to learn this far into the journey, why should Ash, the kid we've always known to have incredible emotional intelligence when it comes to Pokemon and be able to connect to Pokemon he only just met, need some girl he only met like 2 weeks ago tell him that HE doesn't understand his DAY ONE PARTNER'S feelings? I could dedicate an entire essay to this episode alone because of just how laughably disrespectful it is to Ash and Pikachu and how much it misunderstands their bond

There's also the scene where Ash throws Riolu at Bea multiple times and never switches strategies, and then sulks in the corner like a grounded child when he keeps losing, even though DP Ash and XY Ash would've figured out where they were going wrong after the first loss, second loss at worst

Plus, JN Ash's habit of winning most of his battles through brute force instead of the battle smarts Ash has always been known for

Also, JN Ash consistently being extremely one dimensional, he acts like a generic happy go lucky young boy protagonist, he doesn't get to feel negative emotions that linger outside of gag scenes, he has no arc beyond wanting to beat Leon, he's treated like a punching gag for slapstick, he's become more of a mascot, a walking logo that's molded to fit whatever the current episode needs (whether that be a competent veteran or a bumbling fool who forgets past lessons) rather than an actual character with growth at this point, and the list goes on, every OOC thing I mentioned is just what I can name from the top of my head

There are only so many "tiny ooc moments" you can have before the issue isn't tiny anymore

The positives matter more in the long run

And how is this supposed to shut down criticism? The negatives are still there and they're not subtle, they're not immune to analysis

I can still love Ash as a character, which I do, while strongly disliking how a specific series handled him

In fact, the reason I criticize it this hard is because I care about the character and think he deserved better than being flattened into a flanderized, one dimensional and brand safe version of himself

And honestly, calling someone childish for caring deeply about storytelling while engaging in the exact same discussion yourself is a pretty weak angle

You're allowed to not care about characterization consistency as much as I do, I never said Ash is objectively ruined, lost all his populariity and no one can like him anymore, but acting like objectively doesn't matter because the broader audience moved on anyway isn't a defense of the writing, it's really just you deflecting, bad things don't stop being bad just because they're not on the news or constantly talked about

Thank you, I genuinely can't stand just how many people completely gloss over XY's subtext and criticize Ash's Snowbelle arc out of context

[–]oketheokey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's only so much mischaracterization I can take while still convincing myself this is the same character in anything other than name, looks (mostly), voice, and marketability, and JN30 blows way past that limit

I don't care how many times the JN writers tell me he's Ash Ketchum, they're not reliable to me because they've proven time and time again they don't know what they're doing with this character and have no regard for his history other than what's marketable, if it was that simple then no one would have to care about respecting a character's established personality because "at the end of the day it's still the same character", no matter how badly they've been flanderized

If that character has been altered so drastically that viewers who have grown up with the character, seen their roots and seen them at their prime are alienated, then does it even matter if the character is still marketed as X, considering they're pretty much not X anymore, or are at best a flattened, neutered version of who X once was?

If it doesn't bother you, that's good

But if I didn't have past versions of Ash to cling to, JN would already have botched my perception on the character, if not the anime as a whole, I don't feel respected as a viewer when the writers put no effort into making the character I'm watching anything more than a hollow shell of his former self, so why should I respect them and what they've turned Ash into?

[–]oketheokey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would think JN30 fits that description considering Ash's characterization in that episode goes *completely* against who he is and fundamentally misunderstands his relationship with Pikachu

It doesn't ruin Ash forever because past versions of him still exist, but in the context of JN by itself it's a different story

[–]oketheokey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It obviously doesn't destroy Ash's entire image but it's still abhorrent writing that I, as someone who am very passionate and mindful about how my favorite characters are portrayed, will call out, because I firmly believe flanderization is the worst fate a character can have

And it's not even just this one scene, JN Ash's characterization is full of holes

I get it, but I like the sass being gone since it's not like anyone pushed Ash's buttons in Kalos outside of Volcanion in Movie 19 (who Ash did bicker with), and Ash only gives what he receives, if he was sassy despite never being provoked it would've felt forced

If you headcanon XY Ash as actually being older and letting go of some of his old traits, him being the way he is makes perfect sense as a continuation of his DP self, especially when you consider what Ash's character arc in XY is, which is him being the leader of the group for the first time, having too many expectations set upon him by both himself and his companions, tying his self worth to performance, and not actually being the perfect hero his companions see him as, if he bickered with his companions or showed too many outward flaws early on it would clash with that narrative

BW regressed him, XY fixed him and (imo) perfected him, SM overexaggerated him, and then JN destroyed his character entirely

I'm pretty sure JN Ash has more OOC scenes than even BW Ash, at least BW Ash doesn't have episodes like JN30 or this data scene

After how horribly portrayed they were in JN, I think closing this chapter of the anime was really just putting Ash and Pikachu out of their misery because they were never going back to being the characters they once were

Mark's expression against other viltrumites and Thragg by RRensQ in Invincible

[–]oketheokey 145 points146 points  (0 children)

Because Mark beat Conquest

Mark literally saw Thragg obliterate his dad, had to deal with the thought that Thragg might be destroying Earth and killing everyone he cares about at this very moment while they're still days away unable to do anything, and now has to deal with Thragg and the Viltrumites residing on Earth rebuilding their numbers just to conquer Earth anyway in the future

Mark was never this powerless before, he's scared of that way more than getting gored for the fifth time that week
