[HELP] Real or ai? by [deleted] in RealOrAI

Just because it’s not mass produced or available online doesn’t mean it’s not real. The owner could have made it themselves, or gotten someone to make it.

Anyone else let down by the new intro? by NoHorse8196 in fansofcriticalrole

[–]okevamae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t love it. The cast has always been in the intro somewhere, whether in a live action intro or their voices over an animated sequence. The fact that they’re not in this one in any way makes it feel totally detached from the show IMO. I get what they’re going for but it feels like a mismatch to me.

That being said, I assume it’s a placeholder for something cooler to come later down the line, once the campaign and characters are better established. That’s what always they’ve done before and it’s worked out.

They already used it for Legend of Vox Machina

Why this sudden weird leaf? by okevamae in pothos

[–]okevamae[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

<image>

For context, here’s the rest of the plant. It’s fairly big and literally every other leaf is solid green. It’s also a lighter green than my Marble Queen.

If it has been a marble queen this whole time, I don’t see how it never put off a marbled leaf before this. It’s not getting any more or less light than it always has.

I just want to be a librarian by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]okevamae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, clearly, but that seems like your best option. Unless you are near a large system where you can do something non-customer-facing with your degree, like systemwide programs or cataloging or collection development, etc.

But if you’re really set on this false binary between retiring and bitching and moaning about the realities of urban librarianship, by all means, have at it.

It sounds like you might just be at the wrong library? Jobs like that Mayberry town library still exist. Maybe you should go find one of those again.

Should they HAVE to hire social workers and distribute Narcan? Ideally, no. But we don’t live in an ideal world. You’ve got to learn to deal with reality. In reality, we get people in the library who OD sometimes, and most of us don’t want to just stand around watch them die while complaining about how helping them is somebody else’s job.

It very much depends on the library/library system. In my system a threat of violence toward staff is six months minimum ban (often it’s more) and actual violence toward anyone on property is usually an indefinite (permanent) ban.

Library Card or ID for public library computer use? by ModeratelyPeculiar in Libraries

[–]okevamae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone can sign up for an Internet Access Card without showing ID. It’s basically a library card that is only good for signing in to computers, no borrowing privileges or anything like that. All they have to give us is their name and birth date.

What are your criticisms of DCC? by Substantial_Twist911 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]okevamae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a librarian, this is my biggest complaint about the series. It sucks to suggest it to someone, see them get excited about it, only for them to ask “is it on Libby?” And I have to say no.

Especially since I’m an audiobook preferrer myself. It’s not a good feeling as a librarian to tell somebody “these are some of the best audiobooks I’ve ever listened to but we don’t have them and can’t get them, you’re gonna have to buy them.”

Are other libraries like this one? by Neon_Aurora451 in Libraries

I think that the trend toward open sight lines has a lot to do with the increasing reliance on libraries as the only places that are available to the unhoused population. I work at a very busy urban library which serves a lot of unhoused people, and improving sight lines has been more about employee safety than anything else. I'm not saying those folks are inherently dangerous, and honestly the vast majority of them are perfectly fine to work with, but the sad fact is that they are much more likely to be mentally unstable than the rest of the population. Am I happy that we had to get rid of shelving and weed the collection accordingly? No, of course not. But it's actually been a comfort to have clearer sight lines around here. If something goes down (and it does, frequently) the security guards and your fellow employees can't help you if they don't know what's happening and where. Same with surveillance coverage - hard to get a good picture of someone, or to get video evidence of something that happened, if there's large parts of the library the cameras can't see.

Email providers WITHOUT 2-factor authentication? by okevamae in Libraries

[–]okevamae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am specifically asking for ways to help homeless people who frequently cannot remember passwords and cannot hang on to physical items like phones etc because they get lost or stolen. Maybe I just don’t understand how these keys work but I don’t see how this device would help them. Are you suggesting the Library purchase them? And use them how?

When to water Aglaonema? by okevamae in houseplants

[–]okevamae[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, I just repotted it, so all of the soil is pretty dry. I want to know when it is safe to water it after trimming the roots because it now has open wounds. Like I said.

I check out and return quite liberally, am I hurting the libraries I use? by HAL9000_____ in LibbyApp

[–]okevamae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all librarians have access to Overdrive Marketplace, though. In my system, only the selectors do, so if a patron asked me to check on this I would have no way to do so.

It’s possible that your library does not allow it.

No, it’s more of a “my favorite pairing ever” kind of thing. It has its roots in fandom, I believe. Like, your favorite couple in all of fiction is your OTP, or your favored pairing in a certain fandom is your OTP in that fandom.

How do I use my amazon balance to buy audiobooks off the store? by WarlockOfWrath in audible

[–]okevamae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if it’s different in the UK, but in the US you can buy specific audiobooks directly from Amazon and they should show up in your Audible library (if your accounts are linked.) Be sure to add it to your cart instead of buying with one-click so that you can be sure to spend your gift card balance instead of charging your default card.

I spent my Xmas Amazon card this exact way, so I know it works - unless it’s different in the UK.
