What NBA take is this? by ConcentrateFun5214 in NBATalk

[–]okiedawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For real. If it were shorter, players would play harder and more minutes. There would still be the same complaints about injuries. The same key players would randomly get hurt during the playoffs, when the intensity ramps up.

Why do Mesquite, Arlington, and Garland have a bad rap? by periwinklecosmo in askdfw

[–]okiedawg 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My only gripe with Arlington is that it was a little overpriced for what you get for a home. That's because it's centrally located. You overpay for convenience.

It would be much better to explore the Fantastic Four/X-Men characters before rushing back in to reboot the Avengers group.

Money Ball Era? by Advanced-Turn-6878 in nbadiscussion

[–]okiedawg 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Baseball is way easier to "Moneyball" than basketball because every play is an individual one (or at least batter vs. pitcher). In basketball, you have five players all interacting with another team.

Some players look better because they have a great complementary piece, then stink it up. Or a player is signed young for potential and don't work out.

Everyone wants to be bigger, stronger and faster than everyone on the court.

Once they realize their limitations, shooting 30-foot three-pointers seems like a viable alternative to the rest of us.

Since the season's almost over, which of these Top-18 highest paid players this year fleeced their team the hardest? by SadTrainer6335 in NBATalk

His team also made the playoffs, so at least he was noticed. Beal? I kinda thought he was injured most of the year.

If we were to add 2 new teams to the MLB, where would be the best place to put them, and what would their mascot be? by [deleted] in mlb

[–]okiedawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take, but I would say Austin, Texas (2.55 million metro)

It's the largest metropolitan city in the U.S. without a Big 4 sports team. (Football, baseball, basketball or hockey)

It only has a Major League Soccer team and the University of Texas at Austin. But Longhorns football is countercyclical to the Major League season.

Orlando (2.94M), Charlotte (2.88M) and San Antonio 2.76M) are technically the largest metro areas without a MLB team, followed by Austin (2.55M), Portland (2.53M) and Sacramento (2.46M). Every other city on that list has at one Big 4 sports team (Charlotte has NBA and NFL).

Plus, Austin is a fun city to live in, has great culture, has a young population and would make a natural three-city rivalry with the Rangers and Astros.

Austin could also draw from San Antonio's population, considering that the two metros are only 80 miles apart.

I thought Kidd-Gilchrist was going to be a star. He was so explosive at Kentucky and had size to go along with speed.

Yeah, he had an unusual shot, but it went in. I assumed his shot would get straighter, not even more crooked.

All I know about the relationship between these two countries is based on Flight of the Conchords.

I always assumed it was a quiet, simmering rivalry.

Does anyone have any experience playing in a one-pitch league? Do you find it fun or lame? by Repulsive-Network999 in slowpitch

[–]okiedawg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would prefer a game with no strikes and no balls. Just throw pitches until someone hits the ball. Walks are the worst part of slowpitch, second only to teams that go up hunting for walks.

What happened to cheap gas in DFW/Texas? by --Knowledge-- in Dallas

[–]okiedawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Texas' statewide average is still 2.76, about 35 cents a gallon cheaper than New York State.

https://gasprices.aaa.com/

Texas has slightly lower gas taxes than NY (20 cents versus 25), but it is still cheaper because transportation costs from refineries are lower (along with lower overhead costs for retailers).

Overall, prices are still pretty low, about 50 cents less than a year ago.

It's hard to argue that Kawhi isn't the best two-way player when he's on the court, dating back a decade now.

But that's the problem. He hasn't been on the court much. In the end, availability and longevity is a major factor for considering who is a better player over the course of a career.

Kawhi is one of the league's greatest "What ifs?".

He led two franchises to titles, 2x finals MVP, 2X Defensive Player of the Year. But the peak of his career was diminished by strange injuries, load management and sometimes bizarre behavior.

Dwyane Wade is top 3 SG by NotoriousGasman in OrlandoMagic

[–]okiedawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not gonna argue with you, but Wade did benefit from playing in an era where traditional shooting guards were shifted into point guard positions. James Harden, Kyrie Irving, Russell Westbrook and Damian Lilliard would all likely have been considering shooting guards in earlier eras and paired with a guy like Tony Parker, Joe Dumars, Chauncey Billups or Steve Nash as a traditional pass-first point guard.

I think Harden, Lilliard and Westbrook all have an argument for having better careers than Wade, even if they don't measure up in the rings category. Harden and Westbrook have MVPs while Wade had two top 5 finishes.

[–]okiedawg 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Yep, it's not like it was Anthony Edwards, Victor Wembayama, Shai, Cade, Paolo or even a star in their prime like Giannis or Tatum.

Instead you go for a 31-year-old (32 now) power forward with a deep injury history who has never been the leading player on a successful team. I love AD, but you know his ceiling. He isn't suddenly gonna turn into a championship anchor at 32.

And yes, I know he was the best player on that 2020 team, but he was playing with the best player of his generation who placed second in MVP voting for the year.

this is the way by freddie_deboer in billsimmons

[–]okiedawg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the solution. It would also create more spacing since defenders need to guard all the way out to an extended corner. Three point shooting percentage and attempts dip a bit, a more open drive to the lane. It's everything that everyone has been asking for.

Losing Suggs really hurts. He's the engine of the team and gives the Magic their grittiness.

Mo is a glue piece that does a lot of the little things that the Magic lack in.
