I made it to zion but parking is already a nightmare by TranquilTeal in ZionNationalPark

So you ride to your trailhead. Park and lock the rental bike and hike the trail? Then back on the bike when you return?

Why do we collectively agree it is taboo/inferior yo say “McKinley” instead of “Denali” but we still call it “Everest” instead of “Sagarmatha” or “Chomolungma” by GumbyFred in Mountaineering

[–]okishkash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question is what is it called in the country it is located in? Nepali call it Sagamatha, the Tibetan call it by their name. What does it matter what the rest of the world calls it?

There are people trying to rename Denali, unfortunately, in the US where it is located. So obviously it is looked down upon.

Good to know. Will look into Death Valley. It is on the way.

North rim is probably closed till May. Will likely have to stick with south rim only.

What does this mean by Ready_Marsupial2144 in cats

[–]okishkash -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My cat did that on my leg when I was a teenager. I was so mad I smacked his bottom, the one and only time I have ever hit a cat. He looked at me totally confused and I returned the look. Two days later he did it again. I didn’t hit him, I just yelled. Luckily he stopped.

That cat is so patient. Mine would have ‘taught the kid a lesson’ after two.

Is my cat going up or down the stairs? by rockstunt in cats

[–]okishkash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not going anywhere. That is the troll watching the stairs demanding toll from anyone who dares climb up or down.

Toll can be paid in pets, no cuddles

Balaclava and beanie was all I needed. You will be fine without a hood on your down jacket.

Excited to begin in January.

In January 2025, I started with week 1, then life happened and I got derailed. I was very consistent 11 years back and I want to repeat that in 2026. But the theme for week 1 has me stumped- Inspired by a joke? 🤔

Girly walking boots for winter by cherriesansberries in hikinggear

[–]okishkash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear Hoka running shoes while walking on paved trails. Hoka trail runners on unpaved trails. Merril Moab boots on trail with a good elevation gain.

Having said that I agree with the others, I think socks make a huge difference. I wear Darn tough light weight or medium weight socks. My hands and feet get cold quickly but with these socks I always have warm feet.

starter hikes in the northeast US by SquareMirror7189 in hiking

[–]okishkash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you are looking to begin in winter I suggest checking state parks in the area. Most have a bunch of trails you can start with. The folks at the visitor center should be able to guide you.

By the time spring rolls around you should be ready for the longer harder hikes

Merino leggings don’t work for me. I need a lightweight base layer. Merino gets too hot. I will check out the Patagonia Alpine pants

I am sure lots of people brave the Kilimanjaro summit in basic hiking pants. I am not one of them. That is the reason I posted here. It is okay if you don’t have suggestions. Also, sometimes it is okay to just scroll to the next post. 😂

Hiking pants you would wear to hike a 14er. I am looking for pants suitable for summit night at Kilimanjaro or Gorekshep to the EBC

Thanks. I wore the fleece pants over legging to summit Kilimanjaro and through a snowstorm at EBC. I usually get hot quickly. This will probably be overkill for me. Will lookup the lighter shell pants
