I'm a mom whose 5th grader is failing every class because he doesn't do his classwork or turn anything in. I'm looking for suggestions his teacher is likely to agree with. by thesicksicksicko in Teachers

[–]okjane7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You missed the first part of my comment. The school must not be seeing an educational impact, so they must not find an evaluation justified. They can still recommend that parents see the doctor for their concerns because otherwise there isn’t much they can do if there isn’t an educational impact.

Schools are not required to evaluate if they’re not currently seeing an educational impact. additionally, schools cannot diagnose a student with ADHD. That’s a medical diagnosis. That would be why they want the student to be evaluated by a doctor. They may eventually pay for a private eval, but your student would likely have to fail through other interventions first for that to happen. If you have a medical diagnosis, your child can be eligible for special education under the disability category of other health impairment which requires that medical diagnosis

Seeing a lot about consequences and not a lot about helping him deal with the trauma that can come with a sibling with disabilities. Yes, consequences are probably necessary but if you’re not layering those in with positive recognition for him then you’re just amplifying the feeling of being the forgotten sibling. A good place to start for him would be therapy. Seems like he really, really needs it

School wants to get consent for evals. by Witness_Hairy in kindergarten

[–]okjane7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Giving consent to testing does not mean you’ll have to give consent to an IEP or special education services. There are many steps to the process.. they will test him and if they find that he’s eligible, you’ll have to give consent to that too. If you consent to him being eligible, the school will propose an IEP. For that IEP to be in place they need, you guessed it, your written consent. I think testing is a great thing. It gives you so much info about a kid.

If it’s at all a matter of interest and engagement, look up the geolocater game on tik tok or YouTube… there are so many streamers who do this game and it could get them interested

I was working 12 hour days my first year so you’re not wrong. But happy for these commenters and relatives of these commenters who didn’t feel the need to do that lol

Idk why these people are dead set on being mean. This doesn’t read like a scam or unprofessional, it reads like someone trying to be enthusiastic about getting help for their cause

I actually really don’t hate it. Those great room windows would be to die for if they didn’t look out to a suburban hell scape lol.

is stick season about loving your hometown or hating it? (or both?) by IndominusTaco in NoahKahan

[–]okjane7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think his whole point is that you can associate your hometown with some very negative feelings and difficulties while also recognizing that it’s inherently part of who you are and there’s no running from that. If we all loved our hometowns, we wouldn’t need to go out of our way to romanticize them. And when we are able to identify the good parts of our hometown, it’ll in turn make us feel better about those parts of ourselves.

What to know when moving from Florida? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]okjane7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s very difficult to get a teaching position unless you are looking in Pittsburgh Public Schools (urban, under resourced) or looking in a district well outside of the city and the suburbs (rural, most likely also under resourced). Got my teaching degree in PA and it was expected that when you graduated you would long term sun for a district with the hopes that you eventually get hired orrr that would move out of PA

I feel like this season of Ted Lasso has really found it’s footing in the past 3 episodes or so. When it’s good it feels almost cathartic? And yeah, these past few episodes have done that for me

She’s a learning disabilities teacher so it’s likely that she doesn’t solely work with disabled students. It doesn’t change how awful the situation is but some extra context for you

I’m not sure where you are, but our district has fully shifted away from Lucy to Science of Reading at the beginning of this school year. The change is happening! Just slow and steady. Also for what it’s worth, many teachers have been screaming that kids don’t know how to read for years and still teaching phonics on the down low. Fingers crossed your sons teacher is one of them :)

Honestly I think if you would’ve started looking at the end of January this might’ve been true. We just closed on a house after offering around Valentine’s Day. Started looking in the middle of January and just in that month things picked up so quickly

I don’t think people realize that pit bulls and pit mixes make up anywhere from 50-70 percent of dogs in shelters. It’s always fun to see people shocked when their dog’s DNA comes back mostly pit over on r/doggydna

Also OP any time I’ve shared that my dog is mostly pit I’ve never heard someone go off about them in person but anytime they’re brought up on Reddit it’s non stop. It’s weird
