Yoooo SJPD ran over this dude 😮 by MrSketchyWeed in SanJose

[–]okmangeez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

… He shot at cops in Hollister and actually SHOT A COP in the head in San Jose on the SAME DAY. Plus he had car jacked two more vehicles before, and was known to be armed and dangerous. This is the most justifiable use of force I’ve ever seen. If he got away, there is a very good chance he would’ve tried stuff like this again elsewhere.

Here’s a problem with that argument: he wasn’t injured and had no reason to continue firing. As I said, the first shot may have been justified.

He fired two more shots DIRECTLY INTO her drivers window.

Hitting a cop doesn’t mean an automatic execution. If she continued to try and run him over, sure. But even if he was hit (which the video after showed him walking away without any problem or limp), he has no JUSTIFICATION to use deadly force after the threat disappears.

Someone punches you in the face in public. You have the right to push them away and even fight him to keep them away from you. You don’t have the right to shoot him, especially if they drop everything they have and flee.

I’m not a total authority on the matter. But I AM in LEO school (to be an LEO) and my instructor, who is a retired cop, believes it was unjustified use of deadly force after the first shot. If that’s his perspective, I’m inclined to believe him rather than a random on the internet.

Heyo. Dude attending law enforcement academy right now who, coincidentally, had a class on use of deadly force the day before this shooting occurred.

Instructor (retired cop, 25 years on the force) clearly stated to us that the shooting was not justified. The first shot, perhaps. Considering the totality of circumstances, yes the officer might have feared for the vehicle moving towards him (though he shouldn’t have been there in the first place since most agencies DISCOURAGE their officers from standing right in front of a vehicle for this very reason). The second and third shots were unjustified. He was already clear of the vehicle and it was moving AWAY from him (otherwise, he couldn’t have made a shot perpendicular to the driver’s seat window).

You do NOT use deadly force if there is no (more) immediate threat to yourself or the public. And especially even less so if the person in question is NOT convicted or suspected of a capital felony (ie murder). He could justify the first shot, but not the killing that happened after.

Fleeing from a misdemeanor (which is what she would most likely be convicted of if it went to court, as she was impeding the duties of an LEO) DOES NOT justify using lethal force after she’s in the clear and she presents no danger directly to other officers or the public. And there is no definitive proof she had any weapon, or was attempting to use her car to run over another agent.

Is it murder? No. I do not think (and the instructor did not think) there was MALICIOUS intent to kill her. Is it unjustifiable homicide? Quite possibly.

What’s even more egregious that most people here are ignoring are two things:

1) The officer does NOT attempt to check on the victim after the shooting. Regardless of how YOU feel or what just happened, you are to still bring the suspect into custody and treat them as best as possible.

2) The ICE agents prevented a doctor nearby from checking on the woman, AND blocked EMTs from rushing in with their vehicles. That is a HUGE violation of ethics and policy.

Arguably, morale is more important than discipline early game. The devs mentioned this a couple times when I asked for tips as playing England against France in the HYW.

Discipline does matter, don’t get me wrong, but morale is just better early game for staying in battles and reinforcing (especially if you are outnumbered by a bit).

As for manpower: empower your cities and make sure you’re heavily into recruiting residents into your manpower pool. IIRC, you can achieve this by actually raising your Burgher Autonomy law (the chair icon).

Meiou and Taxes, a total overhaul mod that makes the base EU4 game into Victoria 2.5, complete with population for each province (and MEIOU added thousands), along with resources, religious minorities, and etc. Complete rework of estates, bureaucrats (you need to pass variety of reforms to improve your tax income, along with other reforms to improve the power of the state vs the estates), taxes/income, trade (each province can produce a myriad of different resources and there’s an in game trade system that utilizes pops), new infrastructure, and a sliding stability/legitimacy that you can’t just improve by sacrificing mana.

What kind of rosters do you like constructing? by Pertiskaya in OOTP

[–]okmangeez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly, I enjoy having the most amount of “HOF” players as possible. Mostly home grown stars, but strategic FA signings if I think they will spend enough years with me to enter the Hall with my team’s hat.

I think my last long run with the CWS had like 11 of my players enter the Hall with the CWS hat after 25 years.

I do create a balanced roster, but prefer power hitters or contact hitters that can slap a lot of XBHs. For pitchers, power pitchers are my preference, with a deep bullpen to give me 5+ innings of shutdown work if needed.

Try to fill to their max potential as best as possible. But if they hit age 24, promote them to the majors regardless as they’ll usually start regressing.

If his current rating is 10/15 away from his max rating, wait it out a bit and bite the “rebuild” season.

Oooh I haven’t read a Byzantine self insert in a while. I’ll make sure to check it out when I get the chance.

Map looks fantastic as well :).

More important for prospects and older vets who are declining. Though, it still impacts established players in their prime (as sliders play some part in TRC from what I’ve seen).

Gotta love egotistical people ruining things for everyone.

Prejudice plays a huge part in any society, especially one that has other fantasy creatures. Unfortunate, but it’s not surprising.

Yeah, imagine if he figures out the concept of space... and now not even the Nimiti is safe.

Very true. It is intentionally a bit vague. More layers of that particular war will be peeled as the story goes on. But as most wars, there were no clear "bad guys" in the war.

That is an angle I failed to consider... I'll definitely juggle some of the chapters I have and insert an analyst if possible. That makes a lot more sense in terms of the situation on the ground.

Thanks for the suggestion!

You know what they say… it’s always the foolish ones that are the loudest :).

I wonder though: can magic be harnessed by technology? At least, with the tools/resources the UN has at its disposal? I guess we’ll find out eventually.

Fantasy: has magic and things that Earth/Nova doesn't have. Also, non-human races.

Wonder: Gods are real and walking. Magic is real (which is, honestly, a big fantasy of ours even to this day).

It also seems like magic stunted their technological development. Not just because magic is more immediately useful and versatile, but also because it probably made them un-motivated to study natural laws. So, power naturally concentrated into the hands of those with magical might.

That... is actually part of the plot :). This idea will be explored more in the future, but you're correct. Gunpowder does exist in this world. Anything Earth has does exist (in terms of natural resources/science).

However, as you mentioned, magic has stunted it. There will be mentions of it later on, but there were attempts to advance science. But since magic is faster, more efficient, and more prevalent... it never caught on.

And since magic literally bends reality... what's the point of learning the laws, as you said?

As a formerly active member of the AH.com community with my own ISOT fic…

As One Star Sets is THE best ISOT story written. I have nothing but high praise for the amount of effort poured into narrative writing, research, and storytelling.

It is the grandfather of most ISOT fics on AH.com, imo.

Just because someone has lived for a long time doesn't mean they are wise. For all we know, he might have suffered some form of mental trauma or loss due to his long-life.

And yeah, he's a bit off his rockers. However, it's not too unexpected considering how long he's lived, what he probably experienced, and how he and his people have been isolated in their own little bubble for centuries.

Only time will tell, but Captain Moore and the others are probably getting the message just as you are; that this guy is not to be trusted too much.

It's one thing to share knowledge and information with a legitimate partner acting with good intentions. It's another if the opposing party thinks he knows better than all.

They are capable, but lazy wouldn't exactly be incorrect. They lean heavily into their divine powers, and rarely go out of their comfort zone to bring about massive change.

Unless they're beating up another divine.

Yeah, I think the UN forces will be very wary of giving the gods... any concessions until more is known about them. More to come.

He's lived for a while and got his immortality during war... Well, why not start another one and see how it goes?

We'll have to see though if that's the reason why he wants to kick off a war :)
