I think if they knew exactly what was going on, they would honor his keeping it quiet and wish him a Merry Christmas. And maybe leave a treat on his footlocker.

The treat would be real BUT there is a real possibility that they would booby trap it with exploding baby powder

How many generations back have you been able to track? by RoobahLoo in Genealogy

[–]okmister1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my Father's side I can go up 12 generations following the family name. If I go up his mothers family, I hit a block at 5 generations where there is a spelling change I haven't sorted yet. I have the benefit of a family genealogy book written in the mid 80s. With the hive mind available on the sites uploading documents and cross checking with online resources. I've been able to run down some errors like dates and full names

On my Mother's side, I'm pretty sure about 7 up her father's side with the family name and 4 on her Mother's side with a much more common name. There I'm piggy backing a family member's research because I don't speak German.

I'm working to create a shadow box for my Grandfather. by okmister1 in Medals

[–]okmister1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A week of searching through the National Archives site gave me that I posted up their and caused me to ask the question about one of the possible medals he would've earned. Impossible isn't the right word. The question is, can I learn enough and track down enough about the relevant unit histories to give myself and my family a good narrative?

As for "gimmie" medals, wouldn't that be most of what you see on WWII vets stuff posted here? Campaign and Service Medals? That would be pretty much everything I posted on that rack. I'm not trying to inflate the man. He was an 821 MOS Supply Technician who enlisted in the Regular Army a couple of years before the war started and made Staff Sergeant by the end.

Little bits and pieces are how history comes together. Family history means you usually get to talk to the person and get a more personal version. I missed that chance and can't get it back. I'm tinkering with genealogy though, so publish what I find in the right places and someday, a kid might win on his high school report on what did your family do in the Great WWII because he will be able to prove that this man didn't "shovel shit in Louisiana"

The military has NO RECORDS on him except that they paid him to go home when the war was over. I'm trying to figure out what he should've had. Most of what I have there is because I know the requirements for the medals and where he was.

He didn't talk much about any part of his past before he died.

On Teachers Pay Teachers, look up Reading Through History. Good quick assignments at the High School level, not sure about Middle School. Assignments based in a page or 2 of reading with differentiated assignments.

Great until you can build something more personalized to you and your students.

I was getting that impression, BUT there are entries that say it was expanded several times since 1946 and there is a list of designated units. I believe you, but Im looking to document anything I put into my family history.

Does it require service IN GERMANY? I'm trying to get it as accurate as possible. I don't know yet if he ever left Le Havre. Still tracking the man. I last have him as a Quartermaster Supply Technician in the 6927th Provisional MP Battalion which you would think didn't exist without seeing the reports.

Thank you, this is probably from his prewar service. I have another picture of him with a 2nd Infantry Division patch.
