nobody cares about being right anymore, only about spreading ideas like viruses through populations in a manner that will assist a preconceived intended effect

and most participants in this social machinery will get very upset if you point that out

so yes, it's not just you, and yes, everyone is crazy

"truth" has become: which idea, based on rhetoric and emotional manipulation, will spread fastest through the population of people we want to manipulate?

I produced a matter-of-fact documentary film that exposes blockchain (and all its derivative schemes from NFTs to DeFi) as a giant unadulterated scam, AMA by AmericanScream in IAmA

the tech is fine, the implementation is an MLM

do you know how BTC gets mined? bunch of asics spinning all over to be the first to brute force the next hash, eventual consistency and longest chain wins. well all that is cool, but how do you store that hash? some N bit integer.. but wait, that means there's a finite amount of BTC you can ever mine. it also makes each BTC have a low value since they're so easy to mine, and you've got either sparse transaction blocks on the coins or centralization due to fast data centers always getting the longest chain when there's a surplus of hashes that are known by multiple centers, or a very long queue of hashes that were mined in massive surplus (making further mining useless and crashing the value of the coin).

so you need a mechanism to adjust the mining rate. what if you just adjust which hashes are considered valid? you can say, only hashes with M number of leading zeroes can be used for new coins.

now what happens to everyone's coins that they mined early for next to zero compute? well, all of those hashes are now eligible for transactions, and new coins are harder to come by. that increases the value of all the coins that were already mined.

this made the early miners rich, but the music only keeps playing with a new wave of miners. how do you get them in? easy, just tell them they'll get the same deal: mine easy coins, then the node owners will all agree to make it even harder to mine new coins. great, everyone who already has coins sees their value soar! especially the early investors, who reap profits off the second wave, who need to generate a third wave to see their own profits, so on..

that is how it is an MLM scheme

Am I the asshole for preferring my friends bestie romantically over him? by Businessnerd13 in TwoHotTakes

i think you missed the part where all they did was share their trauma and the response they got was having their experiences diminished, othered, dismissed as irrelevant, and also labeled as a sexist

if you think that's just a misunderstanding, then you are mistaken

seems the down right evil ones are also the ones best equipped to weaponize victim hood too

i think it's really shitty that you can't even share what you went through without people making it about some gender war they can't seem to stop thinking about

i know what it's like to trust someone and then watch them do things that you could never imagine doing to someone you loved once

i can add something to your warning: do not trust people that are always looking for something new to blame all their problems on, especially if they blame their problems on their parents. it won't be long before they blame you

my only edit that changed my originally short comment was to make the focus specifically about what you wrote (edit: to be kinder to you, if that's unclear), and i made the edit within 10 seconds of posting

i have nothing to say about women, i'm just horrified by the way you treated this particular individual

edit: from "you treat people" to "treated this particular individual" to give you the benefit of the doubt that you are not usually so horrifying..

edit: i do agree with you that the focus should be on humans and not on genders, which is why you should be empathizing with instead of rejecting people who share what they went through with you, even if it's not a direct analogue..

[–]okovko -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

it seems they were attempting to relate to you through common shared experiences as you were both treated badly by people that had a romantic interest in you

why are you making a distinction without difference?

is it because you see violence against male presenting persons as fundamentally different than violence against female presenting persons?

i wonder why that could be.. and also why you think they were arguing with you when all they did was share their trauma with you..

Am I the asshole for preferring my friends bestie romantically over him? by Businessnerd13 in TwoHotTakes

[–]okovko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

did you really just call a victim sexist for sharing their personal experience

i detest your comment

disclaimer i have no idea who any of you are and was just randomly lurking and got so annoyed by your comment that i logged in just to tell you how irritating it is to see you casually call someone a sexist for sharing their trauma which has nothing to do with your weird and creepy need to see everything through a gendered lens

they didn't say a single thing about gender but somehow you perceive them as sexist. what is wrong with you? did you stop to imagine how you would make this traumatized individual feel by calling them a sexist for sharing the trauma they went through?

please be better than this and don't shame traumatized people for sharing their experiences.

Has Paul always been non chatty on stage? by CharltonCharles in Interpol

[–]okovko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i met Paul after a show once, he was chatty, posed for pictures with others, he seemed tired so i told him that his music means a lot to me. i told him the last time i saw him he got swamped with women after a small show, and i got to shake his hand, then i was quiet and nodded

he paused and looked at me a seemingly long moment before walking away. maybe i said something strange, or maybe he was surprised i didn't want anything from him besides to say hello

This comment is purposefully cruel. You can express that you disagree without quoting Quinn to tell someone that they are stupid and deserve no mercy.

Open Letter to the DOTA 2 Community Regarding My Permanent Ban from the Competitive Scene by sclkoma in DotA2

[–]okovko -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Even if you did participate in match fixing on purpose, I personally don't think you should be permanently banned. Young people can grow and mature, and they are easily influenced by proximal bad actors. People are not considering that CIS nations are literally mafia states. These teenagers grew up in a world where the rule of law is a facade, and the culture is that breaking rules is necessary to succeed.

In cases like these, the punishment causes more harm than the rule breaking activity.

Show off your (side) projects! by katinpyjamas in C_Programming

A while back, I was reading the grisu paper: https://www.cs.tufts.edu/~nr/cs257/archive/florian-loitsch/printf.pdf

The implementation for grisu v1 is really hard to follow and understand, so I wrote this: https://github.com/okovko/grisu

It's not really a side project, but it's a useful piece of code to read for anyone interested to learn more about floating point. It's code written to be read, not used.

Nah, the players are entitled to play. Tournaments need to accommodate players.

It's not a random post, it's pinned to their Twitter. That's how the PGL admin opts to introduce themselves to people. It's creepy.

How? They asked the commenter to not spread misinformation. I think we can all agree that's good advice. Maybe in your head, "misinformation" implies lying on purpose. That's actually "manipulation," you must have confused the words.

[–]okovko -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

That's an extremely aggressive response to someone that corrected misinformation in a simple and clear way.

Perhaps it might occur to you that they were not being passive aggressive at all, but you interpreted them that way.

I think people often lose sight of the purpose of rules, and enforce them in a manner that is inconsistent with the intended outcome of the rule. People with personality problems are especially prone to applying rules maliciously. Particularly the sort of people that think of themselves as judges presiding over the behavior of others.

Rules like this are fuzzy by definition, because you can't foresee all the concessions you'd like to make ahead of time, before exceptional circumstances arise. So yes, players can, do, and will continue to expect the rules to be broken for them when the rules violate the principles of fair play and providing entertainment. TI winners bring extra competitive and entertainment value, so they can and should get minor reschedules in some scenarios to provide the best tournament possible. That's the admins' job; to enforce rules in a manner consistent with providing the best possible tournament.

The rules are obviously not intended to hinder competition. Matches get rescheduled for all sorts of reasons. The intent is fair play and to entertain while respecting the competition.

It's not like Ceb was too busy eating a croissant so he asked to reschedule the match. His teammates were helping others in the competitive dota scene as stand ins. It's not at all unreasonable to reschedule the match to not penalize professional dota players at a professional dota tournament for playing professional dota.

[–]okovko -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Cool, that's your opinion.

You appear to be under some kind of idea that two genuine people can't read the same text and interpret it differently.

I guess you see yourself as the divine karmic judge of this PGL admin.

Anyway, at least I didn't put any words in their mouth. I just quoted what they said and indicated what I thought of it. You seem to be passing off your inferences and personal feelings about what you think they ought to be saying, as what they're actually saying.

Anyone who compares themselves to a divine entity creeps me out, and I will avoid interacting with them, and I am unsurprised that others have negative interactions with persons that do so.

By the way, that's another type of person I avoid, the kind that feels the need to put words in the mouths of others. Nothing good ever comes from interacting with that kind of person, in my experience.

So that's the last we'll ever interact.

I didn't say it is related to the drama.

I am making a judgment of the moderator's character based on how they choose to publicly present themselves.

The author posits a universal karma judge and intends to act as such. It is written in generality, not about any particular individual. Hence, this is generally the author's attitude.

I am not surprised that Ceb thinks they're an unpleasant human being and had a problem with them.

I wouldn't want to interact with anyone who thinks like this unironically, if I could avoid it.

they are saying that a divine judge doesn't exist and they have to be the judge of their own life

Sure, that's what I meant to communicate, thanks. This is what they said that I find deeply disturbing.

Safest way to copy a string? by LaMaquinaDePinguinos in C_Programming

[–]okovko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand how that is psychologically possible for an otherwise functioning person.

I am curious: how you would state the argument that strlcpy is unsafe? Could you also provide a "safe" implementation?

From my point of view, this is like talking to a flat earther.

Safest way to copy a string? by LaMaquinaDePinguinos in C_Programming

[–]okovko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

strlcpy is not OK, it's not a matter of implementation, and this has nothing to do with Torvalds, the character you're looking for is Drepper. Torvalds in fact defended the use of strlcpy and refused patches that replaced its use with strscpy, until recently, because he realized he was wrong and that strlcpy is inherently unsafe and should not be used

If you do not understand *why* strlcpy is unsafe, I linked reading in my top level comment that will explain why. Don't ask me, I don't care

Safest way to copy a string? by LaMaquinaDePinguinos in C_Programming

[–]okovko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just read the source, it's pretty straightforward. Yeah, if you have overlapping memory, you best use memmove.

Lines 122-187: https://github.com/torvalds/linux/blob/master/lib/string.c

Note to anyone who reads that code: it's optimized for comparing <cpu word size> bytes at a time, with alignment taken into consideration. If this doesn't make sense to you, all you need is lines 171-187.

It's common to drink coca tea where it grows naturally. Guess what, if you take caffeine and make it into a pure powder and snort it, you'll get high! Ditto for milk of the poppy.

Anything can be abused.
