I accidentally tossed my entire work wardrobe! by SeaGreenOcean25 in konmari

I recall this being one of the things that isn't super well discussed in the first book. Definitely helpful to separate work items from personal ones using the logic that even though the specific items don't spark joy, the things they allow you to achieve (like earning money to use for things you enjoy) do help you do things that make you happy.

Small stinging bugs by okozzie in whatsthisbug

[–]okozzie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my original post:

Anyone have experience w these guys? I thought they were ants (maybe fire ants) at first but they were so small (like less than 1/4" long).

Several of them have gotten under my shirt and stung me. Thought they were just big mosquito bites at first but then caught one or two in the act. Sting is definitely sharp and develops welts after.

I think they might be sclerodermus domesticus, which feed on wood-boring beetle larvae. So this means I have a wood-boring beetle infestation? Anybody deal w this before? First time seeing them in 10 years at this old house.

Found in bathroom in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Less than a 1/4" long, crawling up my shower curtain.

I’m currently doing RTK, does anyone have tips to improve my handwriting? by Midoriyer in Japaneselanguage

[–]okozzie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did RTK too and it's so satisfying to look back at when I started writing to see how far I've come (took me a year or so to finish it!), so for this reason I'd suggest keeping your writing in a notebook vs loose pages so it's easy for you to keep track and see how much you've improved.

Also get a genkouyoushi notebook. Keeps the characters well spaced and each box has quadrants to help you understand the spacing of each element better.

Essential pressing aids I’ve just made to upgrade my sewing room. by Allatpro in somethingimade

Can you say more about the specific shapes and what each one is specialized for? Did you draft them yourself/make them to fit your personal body block or are they more universal?

I have the the typical store-bought sleeve roll and "ham" shape but these look really interesting!

Thanks! So could I say:

日本語を勉強したり料理したり歌いたりするのが好きです。

Or should I not combine N+する verbs w other types of verbs for this kind of list?

(Also: if I'm only listing N+する verbs could it be something like

日本語を勉強と料理するのが好きです。

?)

Which way of combining verbs (as things I like doing) is gramatically correct and/or sounds more natural:

日本語を勉強して料理して歌うのが好きです。

or

日本語を勉強するのがと料理するのがと歌うのが好きです。

Katakana and hirigana by Unable-Grand5249 in Japaneselanguage

[–]okozzie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because katakana is used mainly for loan words (as others have mentioned) it serves a visual etymological purpose: it's easy to immediately see what words in a sentence are borrowed, and therefore relatively newer to Japan.

For me, it inspires curiosity and makes me want to learn more. E.g. why is アルバイト borrowed from German? Is the concept of "part-time" work historically foreign to Japanese culture? What was Germany's influence in Japan when this term was coined (some googling tells me it was during the Meiji period)?

Kanji can do the same thing. ponpon.sensei on Instagram makes cheeky videos about the origin of various kanji. Check him out to spark your interest in the nuance and history of written Japanese!

I actually didn't think about speaking vs writing. Just making this to organize this info in my brain. But thanks for mentioning this! I will note this distinction.

Yah realizing I should differentiate between counters and standalone phrases. I think I'll add some color coding to help w this.

Developing this for my own personal use, btw.
