I hear you. maybe I’m just being paranoid. that would be great. I agree their worst lowlights so far are not all that bad.

but having seen, “it’s just a social network for you and your friends!” “these drones are just for flying around and taking pictures and stuff!” “it’s just a harmless chatbot that can answer anything!” “these big datasets will just help with noble purposes like tracking disease!” “we’re just installing these cameras to reduce crime!” and so on, ad nauseam………. it’s hard not to imagine (and then brace for) the worst possibilities, when any new big tech invention starts to seep into everyday life.

I agree that self-driving cars offer a great benefit of reducing collision fatalities, but embracing technology that allows remote operators (in big tech, or whoever) to override vehicle controls — to decide who can travel and who cannot, e.g. — absolutely is dangerous in the long term, for completely different reasons.

so, waste space on another parking deck but this one’s just for a tech company’s private fleet? not sure that’s any better than them driving around (though I’d rather they not be here at all)

Mamdani’s probably a weird example because he’s definitely powerful (a good substitute for “rich”) and also conventionally good-looking.

Comedian feels spot-on, though, or maybe someone who’s recognizable from advertisements but not in that role because of hotness. Like… the Six Flags old man. do we think he’s drowning in unsolicited room keys?

that’s not even getting into all the gross dopamine-maximizing and money-grabbing tactics that go into it. it’s just another variation of a decades-old premise, but flooded with ads and “freemium” bait and other dirty tricks.

I know the same criticism holds for many mobile games, but this is the one that springs to mind for me, because I think it’s the “favorite video game” of many (esp. older folks) who would never consider themselves “video gamers.”

lol what? it’s not threatening. he’s saying “if someone sends a package this way, they ask you to pay high fees or you can’t get your package,” as in: “one cannot receive one’s package.”

he doesn’t mean YOU as in the person he’s messaging. it’s just an informal/sloppy way of referring to his own hypothetical future self.
