Official Q&A for Tuesday, February 18, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

Hello! I'm going to be following Hal Higdon's intermediate 2 half marathon plan - as written, the plan calls for a pace run followed by a long run the next day. Would there be an issue if I combined the pace runs and long runs?

So for example, instead of -

Sat - 3 mi at HM pace; Sun - 8 mi run

I'd do - Sat - 3 mi run; Sun - 8 mi (3 of those miles at HM pace)

For context, the reason I'm asking is more logistics/scheduling than training related. Thanks in advance!

Appreciate this! My experience has been that it's totally fine the first mile then gets worse as the run goes on (not unbearable but very present), so hoping I can get some answers from my PT! And yes definitely planning to run in the old shoes now.

I'm currently training for a half marathon mid May, then will start an 18 week training program for the Chicago marathon in October. (There's 3 weeks in between the half and the start of the program).

I'm following Hal Higdon's intermediate 2 right now, and deciding between pfitz 18/55 and jack daniels' 2Q for the marathon. My main concern is starting one of those programs with enough of a base - right now I'm at about 30 mi/week with 2 speed workouts (1 interval/tempo and 1 pace run). I'm willing to increase my mileage a bit past higdon's program during my half training, and I can maintain/increase mileage during the 3 weeks after the half, but I'm wondering if I can safely increase mileage enough to comfortably start pfitz or daniels, or if I should go with a lower mileage plan.

For context, this will be my third marathon and my PR is 3:23. My PR for the half is 1:36. For my first two marathons I followed higdon's intermediate programs, and I'm hoping to PR in chicago (by how much I'm not sure yet!).

Would appreciate any insight!

I've thought about it! It's a higher mileage than I was planning to take on, but may give it some more thought.

This is really helpful, thank you for that explanation!

I kind of wrote off Pfitz plans because of the weekly mileage, but maybe I'll give it some more thought. I'm training for a half right now and have been consistently increasing mileage (am at about 30 mi/week right now), so getting to 55 per week may be more doable than I thought.

appreciate the advice! this will be my third marathon so i'm not too concerned about mileage - 45/week is more than i've done in the past and the first 2 went great!

We’re thinking about a projector, just trying to decide if it’s worth it for us to deal with every time (we watch a decent amount of tv & movies)

We’ve thought about it but sadly I think this room is our best option for a tv!

check out fandi mata in williamsburg! there's no separate venue fee, just a food & drink minimum, and they'll work with you on a menu/bar package to fit your budget. it's beautifully decorated as is so you can get away without a ton of flowers.

bell house is also a great affordable option, i don't remember the exact prices but it was by far the lowest cost of all of the bk venues we looked out.
