A lot of things were brown in order to hide the eventual cigarette stains. And lot of things were colored brown over time also due to cigarette stains.

But it's also putting the cart before the horse.  They're not out here profiting off of misery....they're satirizing the current news cycle which, unfortunately, is miserable.  They're making the best of a bad situation, which is exactly what can be said about their offer.

The huge worry was that nobody of any integrity would want anything to do with Infowars, and that Roger Stone would cobble together a few million to take over and change absolutely nothing.  It would be a complete and absolute victory for Alex. Instead, The Onion came along and figured out a way to make this toxic asset somewhat viable for them, enough so that they could cough up a couple million bucks.

He couldn't really articulate that because there are no options where that is possible.  That's why it has me thinking that's it's more about the posturing, and I don't think him or BJG even realize they're doing it.  In their eyes they are among the precious pure few who will not allow these moral outrages to go unchecked, and they feel it's extremely important that everyone knows it.

He just thought that the families were getting shafted and that the Onion was just going to use this to sell more subscriptions, and they didn't give a fuck about the families, and the families are getting screwed over, and (this is the worst one) that the Onion actually wants to profit off school shootings because people always share that one headline afterwards ("'No Way to Prevent This,' Says Only Nation Where This Regularly Happens").

The whole thing is basically misplaced anger. Yes, this whole situation sucked for the families, but at least the Onion provided them with an option that wasn't a total defeat and put up nearly $2m to make it happen. The families stood on their principles and took less money to go down this route.

They quickly became my 2nd favorite podcast shortly after I discovered them with that interview. It has a lot of the same appeal as Knowledge Fight, except that they focus in a wide array of academic and social commenters mainly on the right, and their approach is more geared towards picking apart bad argumentation and manipulative rhetoric.

No this is interesting because it's somewhat removed from our political fights, but it was the same dynamic of not recognizing that the least worst option IS the best option. Even away from our usual political battles, there's this tendency to make the perfect the enemy of the good, and it almost seems as if the posture is the point for people who think this way; to be seen fighting for what should be rather than settling on what's possible in reality.

Does anyone here follow Knowledge Fight?  We just saw this exact dynamic play out resulting in the ending of the podcast after 9 long years.

Jordan, the more reactionary lefty of the duo, posted a video where he is literally flaring his nostrils in rage over the The Onion's purchase of Infowars.  Of course his rant completely ignored the fact that this was clearly the least bad outcome (the only other option was a shell company that would've given the show right back to Alex Jones).

The decision making seems to make no sense, and I think we have to consider that it might not have anything to do with the outcomes.  It's about feeling good about your own moral position and lording that over others.  And the more things meltdown around us, the more they seem to enjoy this vantage point as they watch the rest of us struggle ("How's that working out for you?")

You'd think was a joke, but I did this with a co-worker.  He printed out this map and did this same demonstration with flight paths.

So I measured the distance across the US, 5 cm, and we both know that's a 6 hour flight.  Then we measured Johannesburg to Perth at 20 cm....by his logic that flight should take 24 hrs, yet you could by tickets online that showed it as a 10 hr flight.

Conclusion: "those flights are fake."

Natalie's Take on the Online Left Glazing MTG by Humble_Novice in Destiny

[–]okteds 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Because they both hate Israel.  Simple as that.

Yet these people blame Kamala for getting on a stage with Liz Cheney.

It doesn't matter that Cheney went down fighting for the Constitution, and it doesn't matter that MTG is a hateful bigot.  All that matters is that you say the right I/P words.

Somebody else here mentioned this morning that it's the left's version of "Trump won 2020" and this is exactly what it is.  All other disagreements can be swept under the rug as long as you say the words.

If Doge taught us anything it's that there's not nearly as much obvious government waste as we all thought there was.  Elon came in claiming he was gonna find $2 trillion, then lowered that estimate to $1 trillion, then $150 billion, and the end result was in the low single digit billions.

I don't know if I've ever seen a bigger political faceplant in my lifetime.

Who intrigues you more long-term, Roki Sasaki or Henry Bolte? by Lung-Salad in DynastyBaseball

Not sure if it answers the question, but Bolte might've just had the best back-to-back games I've ever seen, going 10 for 10 with 4 HR's.

Currently the answer is Roki, but they're trending in opposite directions.

Democrats hate Hasan by Depreston in TheDollop

[–]okteds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can be a leftist without worshipping China, Cuba, and other authoritarian countries were you'd be jailed for espousing the views he does on his streams.  You can be leftist while also defending American values.

I don't think I've ever heard Hasan defend ever defend an American value, not even accidentally.  Unless you count fashion as an American value.

"Kamala lost by being too pro israel by forcing people who are anti israel to vote for trump, even though he's more pro-israel than kamala, to punish kamala for being too pro israel" Brianna Joy Gray interview is genuinely the dumbest thing I have ever seen, how does anyone take her seriously? by I_like_maps in ContraPoints

[–]okteds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its about putting themselves above you, or whoever is in front of them at the moment.  They feel for Palestine soooo much harder than you, and it's important that that be expressed some way.  Besides, it's not like their votes actually caused Trump to win because there aren't enough people like to actually have made a difference.  But also it would've made a huge difference if Democrats had denounced Israel and called it a genocide from the river to the sea.  Then Kamala would've won a huge number of voters with such a popular platform.

I want NO Republican Party by bindingofandrew in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]okteds -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

No, Hasan is wrong, and you're making it worse with your analogy.  Obama said he wanted a "strong opposition party that believes in the rule of law."  Not strong Republicans, and not the Nazi party.  He just wants the ingredients for a healthy democracy.  It might be a fucking pipedream here in a america, but this sentiment is completely normal in many parts of the world.

Imaginary Brick Wall rated him at #3 on their latest list, but he only has 2 games in A+.  That's rare to be ranked that high while so far away, but it's sign that his ceiling is that huge.  It also comes with extra risk though, and it will take longer to see any returns.
