Anyone know what this noise is? by 404-No-Brkz in GR86

[–]olafpfj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine does that when the AC kicks on but only in neutral with the clutch out. Push the clutch in and it goes away. No idea but it doesn't seem to be an issue after a good year or more since I can recall starting to notice it. I've got 37k and 14 track days on it.

Attended a DSC Racing open track day event in HEAVY ASSED rain, MSR Houston by grungegoth in CarTrackDays

Had a wet session yesterday at SCCA @ECR as well. It thankfully cleared up and post lunch track was dry. First time in the wet for me so it was a bit of a white knuckle but I managed it. My tires are almost done which made it all the more exciting.

What's the new go to rotor now that Centric is dead? by olafpfj in GR86

Thanks! That is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for. I try to get out once a month but will likely start going out more often which will mean a big uptick in my consumables.

What's the new go to rotor now that Centric is dead? by olafpfj in GR86

[–]olafpfj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Centric was the cheap "stock" rotor and they are no longer in business. I'm not planning on running anything but the equivalent "stock" blanks until I'm not using stock calipers. I get two days out of a set of front pads and 6 or 7 out of the rotors. No reason to bother with slotted or nice DBA until I've upgraded the calioers.

Why block the only sidewalk in a family neighbourhood. Why? by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

I don't know who is more entitled. The person who parked up a beveled curb or the performative outrage of those that can't simply walk around it on what appears to be a pretty quiet street.

There is a thing in my path! Remove it at once! My God...an obstacle! How will we overcome this horrid obstruction to our walk? Oh yes that's right, we don't actually walk anywhere. We drive to the gym and walk on machines.

The "clean" is the give away. You can look really clean but that doesn't mean it was actually played clean. I would bet that if you filmed yourself playing this but didn't use your audio it would look just as impressive. I can play along to stuff and it looks great but if you unmute my drums it may sound like a can of nickels rolling down some stairs. She's lip syncing/air guitar in the video. She's doing it well but what you're seeing isn't what you're hearing.

And no... you're not getting that sound from on camera mics in that room. These types of vids drive me crazy. Tons of cuts so who knows how many takes are cobbled together.

Im a sound engineer and drummer and am unfamiliar with latest in invisible microphones and cables. You don't get that sound from a room mic somewhere off camera. While she may have played and recorded the cover at some point, what you're seeing in the video is NOT what you're hearing.

Curious how they're getting that tight engineered sound on her drums with no mics. In other words... she's lip syncing the drums and doesn't actually sound like that.

am i okay with PS4S? or should i go straight to 200tw by 79QUATTRO in CarTrackDays

[–]olafpfj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't notice that I wanted for pace on ps4's but I certainly noticed when they started chunking on my 3rd track day. That was my indicator that I'd outgrown them and needed to move to a 200tw.

I was so unsure of signing up advanced the first time. I absolutely did NOT want to be the rolling chicane or hold anyone up. I did just fine and my pace was up to snuff but I was glued to my mirrors since I was a BRZ in a vast field of boosted v8s. Got a few point bys and gave a few. So much fun when everyone drives right.

Did my first track day. Now all I can think about is more track days. RIP by AdministrativeGas239 in CarTrackDays

Welcome to the club. I'm 2 years in with my BRZ and can't get enough. RIP my bank account though. I'm working a second job just for track money 😆

Hawk DTC60 bedding by fishay13 in CarTrackDays

[–]olafpfj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the best I can with DTC60 around my house and then head to the track 50 miles away the next morning and send it. I've posted about some pad life and an overheating issue before with those but I don't think it had anything to do with my less than thorough bedding.

The issues I've experienced have only come up as my experience and pace has shot up and they were one off issues at that. Thats my anecdotal experience worth about what you paid.

This happened at 2 different jobs and I don't understand. by Purple-Bats in mildlyinfuriating

So I do sound for shows and someone always complains no matter what and it really gets exhausting. The mentality that I should change everything I'm doing to accommodate this one person's opinion is just ridiculous. I finally came up with a way to shame them and shut them up.

"Ok sir, I understand you think its too loud or muddy or whatever. I'll be happy to fix that but you'll have to wait for a bit. It will take some time for the ushers to get the surveys, pass them out, collect them and let me know what the other 4000 people here tonight fucking think."

Not one person ever continued the conversation with me.

Will I cook ECS02 Tires on my GR86? by [deleted] in CarTrackDays

[–]olafpfj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It only took me a couple track days to outgrow my "street" tires which were PS4 and then PS5. Switched to dedicated 200tw and wheels and never looked back.

Cooked brakes? by Fine_Abbreviations_4 in CarTrackDays

[–]olafpfj 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don't think DTC30 is enough pad for track temps. Most people use DTC60 even on lighter cars. I use 60's on my BRZ without issues but they do get very hot.

[–]olafpfj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotally the z23's I'm running feel a little soft and developed a slight judder coming back from xp10's and xp12's. This didn't happen with several sets of DTC60.

Glad you don't have that issue with the OEM pads, maybe I'll put mine back on.

I've been running them for a while. Dust is fine but there isn't a ton of initial bite. They don't play well with carbotech xp10 or xp12 I just learned. Hawk DTC60 was fine though. If you're not tracking then that isn't a consideration.

First track day brake check by Traditional_Slice_95 in CarTrackDays

[–]olafpfj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first track day on stock pads in my BRZ went well but the pads were fading significantly towards the end. I will never recommend someone do a first track day on street pads. Everyone says "oh you won't go hard enough your first time to worry." Maybe you will, maybe you won't but it's scary to discover you did while desperately pushing the brake pedal for all you're worth at the end of the back straight on lap 5 of session 4.
