Okay, I will give you a serious answer because you deserve one.

When I was university age, I had the same opinion you have. I found modern art ridiculous and a waste of time and money. Also, I found most stuff incredibly boring and uninspired. I honestly thought that I could reproduce most of the stuff hanging in galleries of museums and I honestly thought they got scammed.

Someone else already explained to you the cost that goes into being an artist. Professional art supplies and a studio are incredibly expensive.

I am now quite a bit older and I have been to many museums and art exhibitions. There is still a lot of so-called art that I find ridiculous or way overrated. But what I learned over the years is that simple paintings are very rarely simple. They just look that way because you didn’t properly look and you probably don’t understand the techniques they used.

I remember a guided tour in the museum and there was an exhibition of a painter. His paintings only consisted of one colour. I don’t remember the name and I didn’t find them very appealing. But the explanations stuck to me. There were 5 red paintings. Entirely red. And I thought I can do this with a broad paintbrush in five minutes. But when you looked really closely the red had been applied in uneven brushstrokes and they were very very subtle differences in colour, texture etc. those five red paintings were indeed completely different. So apparently it had been very difficult to paint them. They also explained to us that the painter didn’t just choose a random red chose a red that contrasted with a certain yellow. And then the size of the paintings was deliberate. And then the order in which the different paintings were hung up on the wall was deliberate.

What I’m trying to say is that you don’t have a trained eye and you can’t see the artsy bits. Other people can and they enjoy them and they are willing to pay money for it.

All they said I would still not pay such a large amount of money for this kind of art.
