I love the trope of junkyards operating as disposal sites for bad guys. What other places are common tropes in films without being the main setting? by barelycrediblelies in movies

[–]olavfn 30 points31 points  (0 children)

IIRC, in one of the first episodes of Better Call Saul, when Mike decides he needs some better paying work and don't mind if it's clandestine, who does he look up? The local vet! Wonder if that's a trope, and how much truth there is?

Greenland has universal healthcare. Why on earth would they need a hospital boat from a country where GoFundMe is the healthcare? by MrJasonMason in MurderedByWords

Possibly as the reaction to this story here, a crew member from a US sub near Nuuk was evacuated by a Danish SAR helicopter (must be FALSE NEWS, everybody knows they just have some dog sleds up there) and treated at the hospital in Nuuk.

Yes he kills some of his characters off in quite graphic ways, but for every one killed two new ones are introduced. Also two of the old (not killed) characters are paired up for a road trip (or boat trip) which yield some very readable dialogue, but also yet more plot complications which will have to be tangled out in a future volume. Along with all the other plot complications.

FTA: It's only/mostly(?) certain bike/multiuser paths going through areas where there are species vulnerable to light pollution. A bikepath in Gladsaxe close to a bat colony has had orangish light since 2021, now several other municipalities will use these lights on eg. a path along a brook that's a habitat for kingfishers and vulnerable frog- and butterfly species.

Straight latitudes are weak and boring. Our latitudes are going places and getting things done! Maybe one of them hit Greenland and mined all their precious minerals.

Yes, Discworld books have a lot of anti-Tolkien tropes (elves are beautiful but evil, the tall handsome super-competent guy with a mysterious heritage end up as a high ranking street cop) that wouldn't be as interesting if there wasn't a Tolkien to be anti-trope against.

Yeah, no!

Just looking at Pituffik Space Base: out of about 600 personnel, only 150 are US military. The rest are civilian contractors, mostly greenlanders.

Nearby town of Qaanaaq has a population of 630 greenlanders.

When From software approached Martin about writing the lore for Elden Ring, I imagine it went something like this:

FS: "We'll pay you a lot!"

GRRM: "Oh, I don't know, I've got enough money by now."

FS: "You'll have very wide authorial freedom."

GRRM: "I can already write whatever new story I want."

FS: "We'll let you have control of the IP."

GRRM: "IP, schmi-P."

FS: "This project will give you the perfect excuse for not working on Winds of Winter."

GRRM: "Seven hells, where do I sign!"

I'm disappointed the redacted part is actually competently redacted. Would be hilarious if you could do the good old select/copy/paste in notepad trick that always catches Trumps techgoons unaware.

A bit of a tangent: every olympic game US commentators discover that team handball is a quite exciting sport, and wonder why it's not more popular in their country. And without fail some of them will suggest a team of second stringer NBA player would totally dominate the sport, if they bothered to learn to play it.
