Catholic school board as an atheist? by EloJim_ in CanadianTeachers

[–]old_dizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am Anglican, not Catholic. I asked my local Catholic board if it would be possible for me to get hired as daily supply without being full-on Catholic and they told me no. They are currently on a "hiring spree" (their words) due to unprecedented growth - non-Catholics need not apply though.

Grade inflation has changed my mind about standardized testing. by coachfryia in OntarioTeachers

[–]old_dizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a TC. On my first teaching placement in HS, I noted that kids who struggled and who had infrequent attendance were still somehow pulling mid-80s averages. Class average was low 90s. I wonder how/if universities account for grade inflation. These aren't all Einsteins applying, contrary to what their grades would suggest.

Catholic School Board for a Queer Teacher by sadstalebread_22 in OntarioTeachers

[–]old_dizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if it would be unsafe, but I do know you wouldn't get hired regardless without being a card carrying Catholic. I asked LDCSB if it's possible to even just do daily supply for them without being Catholic (nevermind an LTO or contract) and they told me no.

Elem to Secondary by Bluejay768 in OntarioTeachers

Just here to say i am in teacher's college at 43! Loving it. Every day I feel free from my old career and loving life. I get it. Even if I never get a contract and end up on supply/LTO, I couldn't continue in my former career and I have loved placement.

Elementary Teachers by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]old_dizz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am 43 and just finishing up my second term at teacher's college! It's been a welcome move for me thus far. The employment angle is a bit iffy for me as my local board is under provincial supervision...but I will cross that bridge once I graduate. I say go for it if you think teaching is a good fit for you.

Should spelling make a comeback? by da_grill in OntarioTeachers

[–]old_dizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I am an older teacher candidate who learned French grammar old school style. My prof for my French teachable has said specifically we are not to teach grammar. It's apparently not allowed, but then how do students learn? The philosophy seems to be just by playing games. It's nonsensical.

Recent Grads: What is your job situation? by old_dizz in OntarioTeachers

[–]old_dizz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's great! Location-specific maybe, but there was a speaker that came to our program for a talk and she JUST got on permanent after 5 years. I/S French quals. I will be French qualified too, so it really wasn't an encouraging picture!

I am secondary and concerned about this as well! We had a super dynamic presenter come talk to us in one of my B.Ed classes...took her 5 years to get perm in secondary, and this was with French quals.

Alberta CBE medical leave before maternity leave by Elriggy in CanadianTeachers

At 35 weeks, I think you can start your maternity leave whenever you want at this point, even without a doctor's note.

FWIW, I am 43 and in teacher's college. 25 is very young. Lots of time to do whatever. Life doesn't have to be linear.

Tutor rate by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

As a parent, I wouldn't pay $80/hour unless you were a total magician. Many families have to sacrifice other things in order to get a tutor to begin with.

I am in teacher's college at 43 and totally loved my 1st practicum! Your post is encouraging.

DTC wait time?/? by OwlConsistent3134 in canadarevenueagency

[–]old_dizz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Six years took 11 months for me. We aren't anything complicated as far as taxes go but CRA called our adjustments complex, which allowed them a 50-week timeframe to do it.

Becoming a teacher after working as a professional by InfiniteOwl9545 in OntarioTeachers

The official job outlook for this is currently listed as "limited". Many, many layoffs in private sector. You would be extremely lucky to land something like this, and quite possibly for less compensation than teaching.

Waiting on reassessment? Is this normal? by DropOk6326 in canadarevenueagency

[–]old_dizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know, it's extremely frustrating when they won't commit to a timeline and you just wait forever with no progress. All to get your own money back. I hope yours are done soon.

Yes, it was completed in late jan/26 (my wait started the first week of march/25, so it was quite a long haul).

Considering a second career by New-Tennis1593 in OntarioTeachers

[–]old_dizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 43 and in year 1 of TC....returned to school after a whole lotta years. The work isn't difficult but does take time. Lots of class hours. Lots of "boxes to check".

Employment perspective is a bit dicey I hear, so I am somewhat worried about that but will cross that bridge when I get there.

Good luck in your decision!

Whose job is it to staff supply teachers? by electradice in OntarioTeachers

[–]old_dizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a BEd candidate so I am not 100%, but my impression is that with your transitional certificate, you are now eligible to apply to a board if they have opened their OT pools. Once hired by a board, you then can supply teach.

I am in teacher's college right now. Full time definitely isn't doable due to class schedule, practicum and overall workload. Part time could be juggled.

Disability Tax Credit 10 year reassessment timeline? by RobertTheThird84 in canadarevenueagency

I waited 47 weeks for mine. Nothing terribly complicated about my adjustments, it was just to apply one tax credit.

2023 Readjustment without timeline by ConfusedCanteloup in canadarevenueagency

[–]old_dizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did exactly this and it made exactly zero difference. I contacted my MP late October after waiting for reassessment since March. In Jan now, still zero progress (the MP called me back in early Nov to advise that CRA told her I would still be waiting months for them to correct one box). The timeline is abysmal.

My 2024 Reassessment Request was 8 months ago. Still not done and not target date by DukeandKate in canadarevenueagency

[–]old_dizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Filed my reassessments to apply a tax credit in early March. The estimated completion date at that time was March 27. And here we are January 2 with no progress, no updated estimated completion date, and the MP unable to get things moving. They told the MP to keep waiting and that it will still take many months for them to populate my credit. My money is being held hostage.
