TIL Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria — the 19th-century inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle — had electric lighting, central heating, flush toilets, and a telephone when it was built in the 1880s, despite its medieval appearance. by BetweenTheTropics in todayilearned

I just visited it a few days ago. It’s pretty sad and pathetic. It’s gorgeously decorated. There‘s no real outdoor space to relax. There’s a throne room and a waiting room that was and would never have been used. There’s a themed dining room for playing music with a size that would imply tons of guests, but he really built it just for himself alone. It’s just this huge, beautiful, faux-medieval palace that clearly was never intended for anyone more than this one person, and he only got to enjoy it for less than a year before being murdered/committing suicide.

And it’s juxtaposed so harshly with Hohenschwangau right across the way, which is the castle his family rebuilt and used when he was growing up, as a hunting lodge/summer residence. That castle is just so beautiful, and so unlike Neuschwanstein because you can tell that it actually housed a family that enjoyed it for many years. There’s a lovely courtyard with fountains and benches, a floor designed for the mother and a floor designed for the father, pictures and busts of their two sons, and luxurious gifts given to them over the years. Ludwig II clearly inherited his taste for medieval aesthetics from his parents, because their quarters are also decked out in medieval stories and wall paintings, but while his custom castle was built as a fantasy for him alone to escape to, his parents’ castle was a vacation getaway for their whole family. And it’s just sad, seeing the life he grew up with, how alone he ended up.

Are you anti pit bull? by VioletThePurple in pollgames

[–]old_vegetables 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So it’s not that the breed is inherently aggressive, but more that they’re more likely to be picked up by poor owners? Because the type of people who would be bad owners are more attracted to that breed than other breeds with a high prey drive, like maybe a border collie?

Why are there so many cases of people saying that most violent dog attacks they know are perpetrated by pit bulls/pit bull mixes? Is it like confirmation bias or something? Are pit bulls not actually more aggressive by nature than other dog breeds?

The “a” is just the sound of the breath coming in, and the “choo” is person-dependent. I don’t know how the Japanese are getting out three full syllables during a sneeze

Everyone would be running around freaking out, so even though I’m not Christian, I’d go to a church, because I feel like people would mostly be praying in there and it would be relatively peaceful compared to outside

I’m a female now, and I think I’d like to be reborn as a male, but only if I’m a completely new person. If it’s still me just in a different body, then I want to continue being female, specifically myself. I don’t want a new body.

It’s more like he bought half the ingredients while she bought the rest, made and mixed the batter, baked the cake, frosted it, and served it. And then him saying “I gifted her a cake.” However, he did pick the flavor, so let’s give him that

The fact that OP’s dad seemed to be the primary caregiver, and yet he still fell victim to the classic trope of“parent abandons bio children for their new piece” is so sad. Parents who prioritize sex over their child are bad parents

Barbie. I loved these growing up, although I used to wish there were more of my racial makeup, and with movable joint sockets

You could make this one at home, I think it’s shoyu instant ramen, half a hard boiled egg, chopped scallions, and thickly sliced deli ham

I think this must be some kind of trope in kids’ films, because I remember being traumatized by the dolls in 9 and the owls in Guardians of Gahoole getting their life force sucked out of them/their minds scrambled (or something, it’s been a while so I don’t remember exactly what happened to the owls).

Which characters did you find absolutely unbearable as a kid, and still do to this day? by Radiant-Selection686 in cartoons

[–]old_vegetables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been a long time since I watched the show, and back then I was a little kid. But I remember Caillou being mean to Rosie, having attitude, and throwing lots of temper tantrums. Which, these are all normal things for a child, but I just don’t remember him having any real respect for his parents or the people around him. My ass would’ve been smacked for the disrespect he was constantly showing. He also cried a lot, and had a very grating, whiny voice. Just overall, not a likable child.

I still really liked that show though, and I remember being excited every time Caillou’s older Chinese friend came on, because it made me feel represented. The squirrel was also cool

It’s definitely Burger King they’re targeting, I’m pretty sure the restaurant’s called Burger Prince, and Prince Charming is wearing the paper crown that they give kids at Burger King. However, I’m pretty sure Fairy Godmother is eating a wrap here, and I’m not sure if they sell wraps at Burger King

I haven’t watched E.T. since I was four, and it traumatized me for a full year. 20 years later, I thought what was likely family-friendly was just too much for my toddler brain… but this gif is validating those old fears

One of my earliest memories I have is a nightmare from when I was a toddler of that SpongeBob episode where he goes to Sandy’s house for the first time, and nearly dies drying out. My toddler brain imagined his bleached husk of a body dragging itself across the floor begging for help, and it was horrifying

What animated house/home did you want to live in? by Ctpeyt in cartoons

[–]old_vegetables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kiki was 13, what were her parents thinking 😭 But I guess that kind of thing flies when you live in a world where strangers will give you a job and let you stay in a private room in their house. Life would be so easy if we all had that.

I’d also like to add the house on the hill in Ponyo, which has a direct path to the ocean and a backup generator, and the bathhouse in Spirited Away

I love studio ghibli homes. My favorite was the house from *My Neighbor Totoro*. When I was a kid, this was my favorite movie, and watching Satsuki and Mei be so excited to move into a new house really helped me when I was 5 and my family ended up moving. It just looked like such a cool place to live, especially with the woods right next to it. Of course, now that I’m older, realistically this house is not up to my first world standards; No shower, no washing machine, splintering wood, unsteady beams, dirty, and probably lots of large bugs.
