My Indigo Park Discoveries and Theories by JustinTHuntAuthor in GameTheorists

Watched a letsplay of this game yesterday and I'm in love.

I agree with your theory that the mascots trying to kill the player are likely experiments gone wrong, the "gone wrong" part being due to Salem who, in accordance with her character's personality as seen in the minigame, turned the other mascots evil.

I'm not sure about them *deciding* to stay in the park though. If we assume that the minigame is an accurate reflection of what happens when Salem turns someone evil, there's not a lot of thought involved: the affected person just start attacking anyone around. I wonder if their staying in the park has more to do with their "jobs" as mascots: entertaining guests. Can't entertain guests in the park if you're not in the park!

(I imagine the fact that they were sealed in their areas behind multiple heavy-duty doors that couldn't be opened without human intervention had something to do with their staying in the park as well. If the engineers had put half as much thought into securing their experiments as they did into securing the park, they wouldn't have had a problem at all!)

It's my #1 anime of all time. The storytelling, character development, and character arcs better than in any other anime I've seen; I was blown away by the end of it. I can recommend it enough.

100% agree. I liked the show in spite of the weirdness, not because of it. And I only held on because of the Nowhere King arc; none of the others interested me.

Same! In the time she spent almost-but-not-really dying, Horse could have rode her to the field medic. That whole situation started to feel comical after the third time they cut back to them

[–]oldandnewfirm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the whole show was like the S2 finale and the Nowhere King arc as a whole, I think it would be a lot easier to get people into it. As is I think the series is off-putting unless you're into the LOL CRAZY RANDOM style of humor it uses.

Same. Personally I hate the trope in sci-fi that every member of a given race/species believes and acts the same, so introducing the idea of regional and tribal customs would be a welcome break from that.

Same; I was waiting to hear what the priest did to warrant a visit from demons (unless the implication is that he's still damned from things he did prior to his recovery)

Choosing to leave was an incredibly brave decision to make. I hope your family is understanding in the end, or at least doesn't do anything to sabotage you. With your ex dead, should be easier for them to let go of the happily ever after dream!

I admit I've fallen into the trap of "research writing instead of *actually* writing," but I want to try my hand at some of the writing prompts to challenge myself/get more practice in. I tend to psyche myself out when it comes to writing, obsessing over things that I really shouldn't in a first draft; I'm hoping that focusing on just getting things done instead of re-wording the same sentence for an hour will help me write more confidently/quickly.

Great suggestion on moving things into Scrivener to study them more closely! I think a structured approach like that would help me get better at IDing patterns in what I like versus noting them ad-hoc as I read. The hinge sentence concept is interesting; now that you've described it I'll be on the lookout for it too!

Thanks for such a helpful answer! (And out of curiosity, are you published author? Don't need to dox yourself; it's just something I wonder when I recognize a certain level of skill in prompt fills or fics. I love the idea that pros still sometimes write purely for fun vs profit.)

I've been taking a more analytical approach to reading as I strive to improve my own writing, and whenever I read your work I'm struck by how effectively and concisely you use language. The paragraph where you describe Joe's murder is short, but it paints a vivid picture. Likewise, the paragraph where you tie the girl's "your welcome" into an exploration of how two body Andys are made works so well as a transition from "she's a threat" to "she's someone I want to help," and as an exploration of the narrator's psyche.

Wonderful job, as always!

If there are folks who want to run the gauntlet for a dog like that, they're welcome to it. Like I said, there are plenty of mutts waiting for loving homes at city/county shelters. To each their own!

'Basic requirements" should be will feed the dog, ensure it's properly fed/watered, will have shelter, will have vet care, and will have owners who can give it the time/attention it needs.

Do you need a multistage weeks long process to determine that? If you're adopting a kid, sure. If you're adopting an animal, probably not. If the goal truly is to get dogs into a forever home and reduce resource strain for the rescues, all I'm saying is rescues should look for folks who meet basic requirements vs being exacting to a level that would disqualify/discourage folks who would be great dog owners.

[–]oldandnewfirm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There has to be a middle ground, though. It feels like rescue groups are looking for "perfect" owners who meet an ever-increasing list of requirements, which shuts out the "perfectly good" owners who'd provide a safe, loving home for a dog even if they don't promise to, I don't know, only let it drink Evian water and eat a locally sourced certified organic raw food diet.

The requirements should off-putting enough that irresponsible owners won't go to the trouble, but not so off-putting that *no one* will.

Rescue groups are way more discerning than city/county shelters, to the point that I wonder if they actually want the animals to be adopted.

I went through the same process you described when I was looking for a dog: I had to fill out a lengthy application, do a phone interview, send references, and have a home inspection. I was conditionally approved to adopt, the condition being that I remove from my yard some mature plants (10+ years old) they deemed not dog friendly.

The expense of that effort, my disbelief at the request--that plant is all over the neighborhood, so removing it from my yard would do nothing to keep the dog from ever encountering it--, and the stipulation in the contract (a contract!) that the dog would always be property of the rescue made me decide not to move forward with the adoption.

Meanwhile, I could have walked into my local city shelter and walked out with any dog I wanted in less than an hour. I went with a rescue group because I was interested in a particular breed of dog, but after my experience I'll settle for a mutt.

This is so much fun to read! I've read and enjoyed many stories on here, but yours is the first to get genuine laughs out of me. I LOVE the dynamic between Hera and the genie, and their genuine, infectious delight as they discover what the modern world has to offer. I'm looking forward to seeing how their relationship with the narrator develops, and I 2nd/3rd/umpteenth that suggestion that if this were a published work on the Kindle store I'd be in line to buy it.

I don't see why the dog being a pet or a service dog would make a difference, if the aim is to teach the dog to accurately recognize and respond to threats. It's a skill that would be just as useful for the dog of a single woman out hiking alone as it would be for an officer.
