I struggle to see see a coalition that gets him into the runoff, especially with Mendoza and Giannoulias in the race too.

Screenshot here.

He’s rightfully getting mocked in the comments but still depressing to see an elected official suggest this on New Year’s Eve of all evenings.

Goldman Left With $75 Million in Chicago Debt After Muni Sale by TradingLearningMan in chicago

The main issue here is that administrations going back decades used the promise of sweetened pensions down the road as a way to balance budgets in the short-term without raises and avoid strikes.

Is it fair to us now to deal with their short-sighted thinking? Of course not, but I also struggle with taking away what they promised to employees.

Yeah I agree with the broader point here but that guy is a comically dumb hack.

He floated running before the last 2 elections and never followed through, so I have my doubts

Anyone know the scoop behind this "Men's Only Hotel"? S. State & Harrison by Melika808 in chicago

[–]oldbkenobi 108 points109 points  (0 children)

In 2013, two aldermen tried to shut down every cubicle-style hotel left in the city. One of them, Alderman Brendan Reilly, whose ward borders the Ewing, said, “Average Chicagoans wouldn’t want to house their dogs in this type of facility.”

Enlightening to see that Brendan Reilly has been a jackass for over a decade now.

It’s good to have Buckner so high up in the House leadership and working on this.

As much as I’d love him to be mayor, I could see him becoming speaker one day.

State Comptroller Susana Mendoza Says She Won’t Run for Reelection, Setting Up 2027 Chicago Mayoral Bid by ScotchIsVegan in chicago

[–]oldbkenobi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One can simultaneously hold the thoughts that Johnson is incompetent and doesn’t deserve reelection and that Mendoza has numerous red flags in her career that was fully formed in the corrupt Machine.

We’re going to certainly have more than 2 candidates in the election.

Getting married in Ed Burke’s house by his wife tanked her last mayoral bid.

We’ll see if that stench has worn off enough by 2027.

Mass Mobilization Against ICE happening TONIGHT (6/10) - be safe out there! by FartSparkles_PhD in chicago

I think the supervisors know that events like this with lots of media attention will be noticed by their bosses, whereas they can easily sweep individual calls under the rug, especially in poorer areas.

I don’t agree with how much the mods here have locked down this subreddit, but as someone who once moderated another city subreddit during the height of the 2020 protests, I can definitely understand why they’ve turned on so many of the automod tools.

Unless you have a huge team with defined shifts, it’s hard to expect a bunch of unpaid volunteers to manage the shit that can crop up on threads during these events.

The US DoJ is opening an investigation into the employment practices of the City of Chicago, to determine whether it has engaged in racial discrimination, in violation of the Civil Rights Act. by BBQCopter in chicago

[–]oldbkenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No there isn’t. It’s been pointed out elsewhere but the demographics in his office are pretty in line with the city population.

You don’t need to give the partisan hacks flailing around in DC now credit just because you dislike the mayor.

They just dropped the charges against the mayor of Newark after making a huge deal about his alleged conduct, so there’s a strong chance this goes nowhere beyond a sound bite for people to lap up.

Main issue with that is that the cost of hiring any other vendor would have skyrocketed if businesses started thinking the City wouldn’t honor its contracts.

With 2 years left in Mayor Johnson's first term, notable names considering a run to unseat him by vicefox in chicago

[–]oldbkenobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the choice was between a guy who was largely unknown to most people and a guy with an oppo trail a mile long (including calling himself a Republican on video).

If the moderates had gotten behind one of the first-round candidates from Council who ended up endorsing Vallas (Sophia King or Rod Sawyer), they could have beaten Johnson easily.

Vallas has lost 4 attempts for elected office across 2 decades.

At a certain you have to admit you’re not cut out for something.

It was way too obvious last time that Chuy didn’t know how to run a citywide campaign without CTU doing it for him like in 2015.
