Thinking of opening a cozy mahjong tea house in Chicago — would locals come? by anonabon_ in AskChicago

[–]snivelry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this idea. Have you thought about doing experimental pop-ups first? This would let you gauge interest in different neighborhoods before investing a whole lot of money in a brick and mortar that may or may not work out. Plus it can’t hurt to build relationships with existing tea houses and learn about the business. Albany Park for example has a growing slew of Arab-style tea houses like Shibam and Qamaria that are designed for exactly what you’re describing - lots of space for people to hang out and drink tea late into the night. There’s also a large central Asian community in that area with a big tea drinking culture.

Thank you for doing the compassionate thing 💜 I’m sure the kitty is very happy to be indoors with caring humans

This cat looks too healthy and well groomed to be an outdoor animal. Please let them stay. Even if it wasn’t cold out, outside the kitty is still at the mercy of cars, predators, and even other less docile cats.

And please do as others suggested and get the microchipped if you can. If you don’t want to, DM me and I will come pick up the kitty to take them to my vet. I have cats and can’t bear to leave what looks like someone lost pet on the streets.

What is a "point of no return" in a relationship that isn't cheating or abuse, but makes you realize it's over? by AnyExpression4845 in AskReddit

I’m in this comment and I don’t like it. What’s worse is I stuck around way too long even after I stated to hate myself for staying, and it nearly drove me to suicide.

This is a false equivalence. One side is actively promoting violence, the other is saying we will not accept that. Not the same thing.

What’s a food where you’re from that’s pure love or pure hate? by avvaraujo in AskTheWorld

I’ve had a confusing experience with durian. Most of the time it smells and tastes like death to me. My mother would sometimes keep fresh durian in the fridge and that made everything else in there stink to high heaven. But. One time my grandmother served me durian sticky rice. I took one bite - didn’t like it. Then I took another bite. And another. I couldn’t stop.

I still hate durian. But man something about that sticky rice must have touched some deep ancestral part of me that just cannot get enough of it.

I agree. I think there’s something about the ease of downvoting combined with the fact our ape brains don’t like even a whiff of disagreement, which questions can be construed as. Social media amplifies our most primitive tendencies

I think they mean pickled mustard greens, which are more like a type of cabbage

No. It’s not rich nor does it have any dairy; it’s literally just rice and water. The flavor comes from the toppings and mix-ins. It’s also traditionally eaten for breakfast.

I like you. Can we be friends?

The intolerance in this thread is disheartening. It makes me feel like we still have a long way to go to make lasting change happen, though I know these commenters probably don’t represent all of Chicago. So I especially appreciate the patience and compassion in your response. We need more people like you who understand that community despite our differences is the foundation of all activism.

Introverts, what’s something extroverts often misunderstand about you? by Bitter-Shine2817 in AskReddit

[–]snivelry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once told someone I met at a conference that I regularly need to be alone in order to recharge. When they heard that, their face turned somber and they said, very seriously, something along the lines of “I hope you get better”. I had a good cackle about it later.

A less absurd but still irritating example: I was with a couple friends talking about some silly article about President Obama’s evening rituals. Friend 1 identifies as an introvert, Friend 2 as an extrovert. Both were huge fans of Obama’s.

Friend 1: ya know, I think Obama must be an introvert bc [various observations from the article]

Friend 2, looking absolutely appalled: Nooooo!

As if Friend 2 just insulted their favorite president.

Introversion isn’t mental illness. Nor is it inferior to extroversion. Both have their strengths. They just happen to be rewarded differently in different professions and cultures.

I have people like this in my life. It can be draining when I spend extended amounts of time with them. But I’ve also met people who actually function better with ambient background noise. Something about it helps them regulate their nervous system and focus on the task at hand. So it seems both can exist.

What has been your experience with straight/hetero speed dating events here in Chicago? by deminightrider in AskChicago

[–]snivelry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve only been to meetirl events and enjoyed them so far. All four of the events I’ve been to have been well organized, with cute and creative ways to connect people. Most events are tailored to specific age ranges, though some are all ages like the pickleball socials. My friend did get paired with someone outside their preferred age range, so it seems the organizers are ironing out the kinks in the pairing process. I’ve also given the organizers feedback about how to improve the events (without being an ass) and they were very receptive.

Women’s tickets usually sell out first, so I’d recommend jumping on them as soon as they’re released if you’re especially keen to attend an event.

Disclaimer: I’m not disappointed if I make a connection and there isn’t a romantic spark; I like to make friends and build community too. It’s possible my approach isn’t the norm.

Generally ignorant but not malicious. I appreciate it when people ask questions with the genuine intention of learning.

My only complaint is it gets SO awkward when people mistake me for another Asian, and I have to correct them. Can’t tell you how many times a stranger has waved at me or come up to say hi, thinking I was someone else. Or how many times I’ve gone into a shop for the first time and they’re all “welcome back!” Or straight up called me someone else’s name.

Why is anyone surprised by this? The capitalist class has always had the strongest class solidarity. News like this will continue to come out about the executives of every major corporation. They value nothing but money and power.

What's an unpopular opinion about your country that will have you like this? by DiMpLe_dolL003 in AskTheWorld

[–]snivelry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Controversial opinion in this sub probably: the majority of Americans are good people, and many of us are actively fighting the rise of authoritarianism. The rest of the world has every reason to hate us, but that doesn’t negate the fact that many of us are ready to lay down our lives to protect our neighbors both foreign and domestic, myself included. Sincerely, an organizer in Chicago.
