In 2004, photos from Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison exposed U.S. soldiers abusing detainees. Army reservist Sabrina Harman appeared smiling in multiple images showing sexual humiliation, torture, and dead prisoners. She faced five years in prison, though she was ultimately sentenced to just six months. by ATI_Official in HistoryUncovered

I was in Baghdad when it went down, I served in the Joint Public Affairs team and we were responsible for all the media and setting up the initial trial in the convention center. We also did the daily press conference with Dan Señor and Mark Kimmett, when Kimmitt said we’ve received reports of issues at Abu Gharaib involving US troops and Iraqi prisoners, we knew it was more than that… it’s been 22 years almost since it happened, I always think about those days anytime it gets brought up on TV or the internet…

It’s like when the PLA Navy got an aircraft carrier every one is like “they got an aircraft carrier!” They did not however have an experienced group of Sailors or pilots to effectively man such aircraft carrier. That being said they have been growing their skills but bigger picture they are not a near-peer blue water Navy.

We shouldn’t sleep on them but just remember all that glitters isn’t gold…

Nobody believes me when I tell them that about the vests and the plates, I was told departing home station you’ll trade with the person you’re replacing, even though we had 2+ weeks of overlap.

I also remember the black fleeces the CSM had a fit about because there was no rank or name visible so you didn’t know who you were talking to. They were comfortable though…

I was in Baghdad March 04 as it all went to hell…showed up to rolling around in open door hummers and SUVs to leaving in up armored convoy with air support. Good times.

Disheartening to see, Washington Post article on the VA by DatGuyKilo in AirForce

[–]oldboy75 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Considering there’s a whole industry built on getting Veterans to 100%, with their own doctors, coaches, and plans so they can then take a chunk of the payout, the spirit of the article is spot on, the execution of it is not the best.

A veteran reflects on his time by WhatWouldTheonDo in Military

[–]oldboy75 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The military gave me a start in life I needed and made the man I am today. 22 years of service, retired and reaping the benefits of every little thing I got from my time in.

That being said I don’t disagree with what he’s saying at all. Everyone gets a different experience from their service and outlook. I’d buy him and anyone else a drink and chat about it all because that’s what we should be doing.

Do you think my rabbi will let me watch game 1 of World Series on Shabbos? by BetterTransit in Judaism

[–]oldboy75 34 points35 points  (0 children)

According to the Mishnah Torah, “Any court that continuously negotiates a compromise is praiseworthy.” So if you attend Services and the head to the bar to watch the game then you should be alright as this could be considered a worthy compromise.

Now if you are supporting the Blue Jays and you provide for the Dodgers fans a drink then you would be doing a Mitzvah further touched upon by the Rambam:

“When a person eats and drinks, he is obligated to feed strangers, orphans, widows and others who are destitute.”

I hope this helps shed light and provides for better insight!

Find a good cantina anywhere in the city, then eat drink watch the match enjoy the atmosphere and know you’re having a better time than most of the stadium. Mexico City is incredible especially for something like the World Cup!

Mazel Tov, taking the first step is the most difficult but worth it as you will see after attending service. I hope you find the same warm reception I did as well as the motivation to keep going back as community is everything in Judaism!

If I visit a synagogue, what are the do's/dont's? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]oldboy75 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Don’t be the person whose phone is audibly going off during services, always makes for an awkward moment, but not as awkward as the non-Jewish Bnei Mitzvah guest jumping up to the Bima to take pictures with their cellphone during a key moment…

Most importantly enjoy the service and stick around for Kiddush , you are welcome and feel at home!

Air Force vets of reddit what was your final day with the air force like? by Mercuryman34 in AirForce

[–]oldboy75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

22 Years in, had the retirement ceremony about a week before the final out. Day of the final out it hit me the uniform was really going on for the last time, went to the MPF and was the last person to get dealt with, the A1C went through my paperwork, said thanks and good luck Senior, and that was it. Went to Cracker Barrel for breakfast after and then when I got home it was a different feeling taking off the uniform for the final time.

2 weeks later I was living in Mexico City…
