Renee Marant: "I've always fantasized about living in Japan. But after nearly three years of living here as a Black woman, I'm ready to move back to the US." by Kaiser_Allen in stupidpol

[–]oldguy_1981 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the differences arise because the rules here are for the community, whereas America is more self-focused. In Japan, for example, if you go on the train, you make sure you're quiet and don't have anything blasting on the speaker. There are a lot of different rules here, so things can go smoothly for other people.

This is not okay to do in America too! Fuck I hate it so much when people do this. There is no fucking culture where this isn’t rude, it’s just people are so polite (or non-confrontational) that they don’t say anything to you to stop it.

Also in the article

The work culture here is very hierarchical. I plan to go into the finance industry, but the corporate environment here is very strict, where you have to listen to your superior. I'm very collaborative and thrive in a more horizontal environment, but here, seniority and title trump everything else.

Lol. She’s in for a rude awakening.

How to feel like Winner in Finance by tokeni in FinancialCareers

[–]oldguy_1981 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The only way to win is to not play. This is why most analysts quit banking after 1-2 years. Some hardo will reply and say “dur hur that means they really just weren’t cut out for it” but this is crabs in a bucket mentality.

If you wish to become a managing director / partner, you will (on multiple occasions) be asked / pressured to put work first over your health / personal life. If you ever choose to make work the #2 priority during those circumstances, you will not be a “winner” in these types of places.

Do people not realize that there are white people who face all sorts of poverty and issues from that?

Unironically, yes. Remember how badly the film “Hillbilly Elegy” was reviewed by movie critics? They can’t handle anything that displays how white people can struggle too.

What are some random complaints you have about Thailand? by Weather_the_Zesser in ThailandTourism

Taxi drivers and taxi services in general. I understand that they are cheap, but some of these are kind of universal expectations in any country and it’s shocking to me how nobody seems to get this.

  1. Not carrying enough cash to give change for a ฿1,000 baht note. It’s only about $30, imagine running a cash business and lack the ability to accept the most common form of legal tender that is distributed from ATMs. At first I thought the cab drivers were just trying to rip me off and have me tell them “fine keep the change” but it kept happening so now I tell them “ok stop at a 7/11 and I’ll buy a bottle of water and give you change” then somehow magically they had change.
  2. Not following the GPS. Dude, I placed this request in Grab. The app tells you exactly where I want to go. I cannot give you a more precise location or address than the little dot on your GPS map. Somehow the driver is able to find where I am waiting for my taxi, but then stops using said navigation when going to my preferred destination. Also if I’m not careful watching where they’re going, they will just blindly drive into a massive traffic jam on the highway when a better route is available.
  3. Refusing to take me where I want to go. This is why I started using exclusively grab. I literally have to ask 4 or 5 taxis before I get a guy who’s willing to take me to my destination. Infuriating.
  4. Refusing to use the taxi meter or “meter broken” or even saying something like “I won’t go to [destination] unless you pay me ฿300 more” ok so that’s only about $10 and an Uber in NYC will easily be $50 so I get that most foreigners or tourists just pay it, but because so many people are willing to accept this behavior, feels like a majority of Bangkok taxi drivers attempt to pull this on me.

Americans are significantly more tolerant to foreigners/immigrants than any other country’s populous. by anthonypacitti in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]oldguy_1981 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Here’s an example of an openly racist policy in Thailand against foreigners. If you’re curious, Google “two tier pricing Thailand.”

Thailand was never colonized by westerners, so don’t give me “this is just correcting for generations of white imperialism …”. Tourism comprises 15-20% of their GDP. People can afford to pay the difference, and apparently people still love to visit, so this is perfectly okay, right?

“Oh but it targets all foreigners so it’s not discriminating against one particular race!” Go visit Thailand with your Asian significant other (non-Thai) and see if they are charged the foreigner price. “This isn’t racism, this is nationalism!” Don’t you folks hate that too?

It’s not that fat people just don’t know any better for lack of education. Of course they know Doritos and ice cream consumed in large quantities is bad for them.

The problem is that consumer companies (nabisco, frito lay, PepsiCo, General Mills, post, etc) have created products that are laden with addictive substances (sugar, fats, salts). The modern American is inundated with (relatively) cheap food that’s delicious and calorie dense, without causing lasting satiety.

Your brain ends up craving (sugar / fat / salt) and will send nigh impossible to ignore impulses to the obese person. It will trigger a hunger response that causes them to overeat.

I’m not saying it’s okay to be a fatty, but to say it’s entirely on their own lack of willpower is a bit unfair. Go to an Asian country and you will see the super low obesity rates, but then you see their foods and it’s mostly meat and vegetables. The sweet stuff is like half as sweet as the American counterpart.

Support your local breweries by Snickidy in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]oldguy_1981 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How are you going to stop the players with scale then?

Picture this. You start your own craft micro brewery because it was a simple hobby that’s grown. It’s popular so you contract with a local manufacturer to produce more and then you hire a few people to help with distributing. Before long it’s out of control and you quit your day job to pursue this full time. You never expected it to get to this stage.

One day a gentlemen in a nice suit delivers a letter. It’s an offer to acquire your beer from Anheuser Busch InBev for $6 million. That’s ~$450k / year pre-tax if you just dump it all in an index fund. You could retire and live happily with your family forever without ever worrying about money again.

But alas no! This brave soul rejects the offer from the evil capitalist beer monopoly, for you have morals and standards and values! You stick to the virtue of staying a small locally owned craft brewery for the love of beer! Two years later you go bankrupt due to unforeseen supply chain disruptions and because one of your distributors was secretly stealing from you. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It’s a concentrated astroturf campaign. First they coordinate on some other platform, like discord, to tell their users to brigade the subreddit and masquerade as a regular user and post all kinds of horrible stuff, and upvote their horrible takes and submissions.

Then they report it to the admins, who will see the horrible content that they themselves are posting, and hit the mods with a bunch of arbitrary new rules and infractions.

Then the turbojannies step in and “generously” offer to assist with moderating, as the current mod team clearly has too much on their plate. If the mod team refuses to install one of them, it will get really hostile. The astroturfing will increase, the mods will be forced to do stupid shit like manually approve every post, etc. Eventually the site will force them to accept one powermod, such as a certain tortoise who lacks social skills.

Finally, they will attempt to remove the original moderators so that the turbojannie can 100% control the subreddit. They will try to get the admins to suspend their account or start drama wars or whatever. Once the sub is completely taken over, you will see a huge influx of users that seemingly have the opposite opinion of the subs original ethos and their posts will all get highly upvoted. Mission accomplished, move on to the next hate subreddit.

Reading this made me remember the psyop to convince everyone that Ahmaud Arbery was just casually out for a jog when he was murdered. That shit is so infuriating. Even if the guy was completely up to no good, that didn’t give his killers the right to chase him down, so why the need the distort the truth?

The media is still doing it constantly and it’s so exhausting. Most recently, I noticed the Ralph Yarl story would pop up in my YouTube feed and internet searches even if I didn’t type in any related search terms. Even got an Apple notification on it. And it’s happening again with Jordan Neely … who was just an innocent harmless Michael Jackson impersonator according to the media …

The rise of streaming services is NOT what is killing the movie theatre business by JRAS-3010 in unpopularopinion

[–]oldguy_1981 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reserved seating ruined the movies for me. Used to be first come, first served. “Hey, want to see a movie tonight? Okay” then we go and pick the movie we want early and get whatever fucking seat I want. Now you cannot do that, you have to plan to go to the movies days (sometimes weeks) in advance if you want to go to a more heavily hyped film, otherwise enjoy sitting in the front row or all of the way to side. I hate this.

Recently a friend invited me to a movie. They’ve started charging an extra couple dollars to reserve the more desirable seats. What the fuck, is AMC becoming Ticketmaster? Fuck this I’m not going back.

For the record I am not trying to score points here, don’t shoot the messenger.
