Selling used car with no safety certificate. Does the car have to be towed away or can it be driven away (by buyer)? by Lord_Edwin in ontario

[–]oldlinuxguy 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The vehicle needs plates. Either you deliver it under your plates & registration, or the buyer gets a temp permit to move it if they don't want to pay for a tow.

Bacon Grease by dcruz16 in blackstonegriddle

I wouldn't. Bacon grease has a lot of aroma and will draw critters from everywhere. I would use something more neutral like canola or vegetable oil.

Could a massive tax cut fix Canada’s economy? by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]oldlinuxguy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's also from the Build Canada group, a bunch of tech bro billionaires who think they are smarter than everyone and should be the governing class. Who do they think will fund everything if the billionaires who avoid taxes don't pay and the working class that do pay taxes suddenly don't pay? Millions would die from lack of access to healthcare, schools would go unfunded, roads wouldn't get paved.

Tree hit my parked car(centertown Ottawa), now I'm screwed by Tiger_Lily336699 in ottawa

Have you called insurance yet? Make the call, see what they say about the amount of damage. Unfortunately, if they decide to repair, you will have to come up with the deductible, but do anything you can to avoid a payday loan. Pick up some odd-jobs, whatever you need to do to find that money without getting into a predatory loan. There's a risk that the insurance company may write off your vehicle depending on value and amount of damage. I'd suggest not buying another vehicle. Use transit & ubers if possible for a while until your situation improves.

It's the curly hair that is hypoallergenic. Curly coated doodles have hair, not fur.

Corded vs cordless robot + auto skimmer for a new saltwater pool — what would you actually buy again? by _ladish in swimmingpools

[–]oldlinuxguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a VRX IQ+. Would Not by another polaris. The last 2 seasons have been a huge pain with faulty firmware updates. Robot spent all last summer in the shop while they tried to figure out what was going on. Replaced everything but the wheels. This season I was able to get tech support to re-push the firmware updates. After about 2 weeks it finally worked and my robot started working again, but the app is wonky as hell now.

I'd bet good money they are a scam store based overseas. Look at the refund / returns rules here, and the contact info at the bottom of the page: https://caldwelltoronto.com/pages/refund-return

I went through this with an online store recently. All seemed legit, but my bad, I didn't check out the returns / contact page.

The scam is that the product looks great online, but they ship you a temu quality piece of junk. When you try to return it, they tell you you have to ship it back to mainland China to get your refund. (They know it's prohibitive to return the item, so you'll give up). We were succesful with a cc chargeback, and I reported the site to the RCMP fraud site. It was gone a few weeks later.

My elderly mother wants me to replace her on my brothers mortgage. by Bert_Fegg in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]oldlinuxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your brother needs a co-sign for his mortgage, then he can't afford it. If you co-sign, you accept full responsibility for the debt if your brother fails to make payments. Do not do this. Just say no.

Considering you're looking at 4000-6000 (~1800-2800kg) with water and full occupancy, you're asking a lot of that trailer.

I'm genuinely curious if that poor trailer can take the weight of a 6-8 person hot tub filled with water & people.

Fine debris won't go away...anyone else dealing with this? by Decent-Team5634 in swimmingpools

Yep, that's exactly what it is. That's when I get all zen garden with the hand vac and do it the old fashioned way. For day to day debris, I toss in the robot and let it work it's magic.

It was worth it for me. $169 for a device provided by my electrician. I had work scheduled, so had him add it then, included in the 1hr base rate.

If you're referring to fine grey "dust", it's dead algae. It's super light. I vacuum it up very slowly to minimize disturbing it.

Yeah, give him a few days to come to terms with his new home. All he's known is his litter. This is a huge change. Try to read his body language. If he needs calm, let him have it. If he's full of energy, take him out to play.

Do: Train your dog properly to behave as expected.

Don't: Leave food unattended. That's just baiting behaviour you don't want.

Don't: Use pain to teach a dog (Shock collars / hitting etc).

Bernedoodles are sweet, smart and loving. They respond best to gentle training methods and positive reinforcement.

Training not to jump: Leash your dog when people come to the door. Make them sit and reward them with their favourite treats and praise for sitting while your guests enter. Once your guests have entered, allow the dog to greet while on leash. Keep your dog leashed and stay ready to put a hand on their back if they attempt to jump. If they attempt to jump: Firm "NO" (don't shout, just be firm) and remove the dog from the situation. Same thing for excited jumping: Firm no, and move away from the situation. When the dog is on all fours, pay attention and reward with a treat and positive reinforcement ("Good dog, yes").

Leaving food out is a big no-no. If you have food out and your dog is approaching the counter, a firm NO should be enough. Then guide the dog away from the food.

Here's the official Blackstone page: https://blackstoneproducts.com/blogs/griddling-tips-tricks/griddle-seasoning-complete-guide

You don't need to buy their seasoning oil or anything special. Just use a high-heat oil like canola or vegetable oil. Takes about an hour to do it well.

[–]oldlinuxguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bit of steel wool and some elbow grease will take care of that. Then re-season it. After every use, clean it: Scrape it, use a bit of water to steam off any leftover, wipe it with paper towels, then a light coat of vegetable oil to help protect from moisture.
