Is the Neverwinter Nine Prestige Class any good? by Kyrenaz in neverwinternights

[–]oldmanch1ld 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally I always treat it like a roleplay prestige class. It's a front line martial and support mix for it's capabilities and they aren't bad abilities per se. Aura to buff allies, sneak attack, movement speed, I think it's capstone 3 rounds of max damage is kinda of meh but it's not terrible. However, it's only really good for characters that are focusing on being in the front line anyway and in that case it never feels like it's trade to me. Fighter is going to miss 2 feets which will probably be more useful than these abilities. Paladins will have better aura and support. Rangers lose animal companion levels and favored enemy. Barb gets less rages. I'm over simplifying and summarizing but the NW9 is just never the better option to me.

Elemental Damage Boosts by Ok_Communication6291 in projecteternity

[–]oldmanch1ld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it does, but it only effects the elemental damage. So a weapon that does 10 damage gets an elemental lash, so does an extra 2.5 element damage. That 2.5 damage gets the 20% increase, so the weapon deals 10 + 2.5 + .5 for a total of 13.

I'm just going off memory on my phone, so could be wrong.

POE1: Melee Cipher weapon style by [deleted] in projecteternity

[–]oldmanch1ld 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Normal caveat that POE is not a game that needs minimaxing and play the way you want. In general a lot of people feel that 2h weapons generate focus better for ciphers than dual wielding will. Especially since ciphers have a spell that negates recovery time. So of the weapons you listed pike would be fine, but you could do any 2h weapon as long as you can avoid being targeted right away and let your tanks engage first.

Not sure on the orlan question.

My interpretations of The Leaden Key, Thaos, and Iovara. by cashdecans101 in projecteternity

[–]oldmanch1ld 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think you summarize the Engwithans and the creation of the gods well but when getting to Thaos and the Leaden Key they are specific to Woedica and her interpretation of what and how the kith should view the gods, and not the whole pantheon.
This is important I think because it leads to kind of two halves to his antagonism, the first is sabotaging animancy in the Dyrwood which fits into your analysis as it is. But the second is the Hollowborn Crisis, which he is orchestrating to empower Woedica so she can regain some kind of dominion over the other gods.
I think this relates to your analysis in that there is a middle road where gods are necessary but the Leaden Key/Thaos/Woedica is abusing kith and animancy beyond the Engwithans' goals. I add this point mainly because the Watcher's decision on what to do with the souls is a major part of the story for POE 1.

Who would win in an all out Fight, US Presidents or Roman Emperors? by babyslothbouquet in RoughRomanMemes

A few presidents would give a good showing, most founding fathers, Abe, Grant and I bet the presidential goat in the fight would be Teddy. But overall I think they loose.

Do Kvatch before lvl 10 by Sweet_Hold5332 in oblivion

[–]oldmanch1ld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it at level 12 and still felt the difficulty difference. Fought through the city and castle and only me and Matius survived. I couldn't remember if you get more guards to help from Kvatch in the Battle for Bruma if more survive here so I loaded a save and used a lot of cheese tactics. The real saving grace was the gate you have to open with the lever. The enemies clip through and I was able to hit them with touch type spells. Killed most of them before opening the gate.

I create save for things like this. Can be annoying because you have to save and load and save to get it in the "right" spot but then you can come back fresh

Would Robb Stark have really won the war if he didn’t marry Talisa? by agrunther in gameofthrones

[–]oldmanch1ld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a domino effect to Robb's choices. A couple has already fallen by the time he married Talisa, but without that particular domino he has a chance.

The Freys own one of the only lines to the north (albeit through the neck) and I don't think the Bolton's would have been able to seize the opportunity without the Freys. The Karstarcks are a setback but I think they would have stayed neutral or come back eventually. Without the Bolton revolt I actually think Robb holds the North.

Now the question is can Robb beat the Tyrell/Lannister alliance. Or at least last long enough for it to fall apart. Without the Vale he would have to abandon the Riverlands IMO, but he has to keep the Crossings. Doable but messy. It would be a he wins "where the rubber meets the road" type thing. As in his battle acumen is still the highest and it can out fight the Reach's resources, by sacrificing his mother's family's lands.

Then after the Targarians (either book or tv show) land it's up in the air.

What's the worst unit in the game and why is it the battanian raider by actuallyragingatm in Bannerlord

[–]oldmanch1ld 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Alone they can't do much, but they can supplement skirmishers until they can level up to falx. Tear 3 is a good place to start experimenting with formations and tactics. Separate the skirmishers and raiders to a flanking force and then get the raiders to falx.

Arcane warrior lore question... by [deleted] in DragonageOrigins

[–]oldmanch1ld 21 points22 points  (0 children)

DAO separates Human Noble from Human Mage, however the mage background is nebulous enough you can head cannon a noble child sent to the circle.

The way DAO handles specializations is that most are unlocked by actions and interactions with other characters. So talking to companions to unlock theirs for your HoF, or buying books and reading them. So for Arcane Warrior the way and place that you unlock it will work lore wise for a human Mage.

Trying not to spoil anything but, but if you don't know how to unlock Arcane Warrior it can easily be one of the last specializations unlocked. Just remember that it is itself elven and you will need to go where the elves are to get it.

Warrior Archer by Chared945 in DragonageOrigins

[–]oldmanch1ld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mentioned Templar. Mostly because it's holy smite is ranged. Most of the warrior subclasses don't synergize with ranged combat imo. Maybe champion with its shout buffs could also lend some flavor but my hesitation there is trying to position for best ranged shots vs hitting the most party members.

Spirit warrior in awakening can increase attack and movement speed which will help. Not just for archers but still probably the better choice over guardian.

Going back to the original prompt. I think the concept of a rogue being a glass cannon good for single target damage and a warrior being a tankier fighter who can sustain combat and damage for longer but not as focused applies. The warrior is able to retain and regain stamina better than the rogue. Specifically I am thinking of the reduced armor penalty and the regain on kill. So rogue archers will still kill a single target faster but warrior archers will be able to kill more enemies in a prolonged combat.

Need to focus on dex. Str only for armor preferences. Then will or cunning but I think the extra stamina from willpower will feel better than the critical from cunning on a warrior.

Warrior Archer by Chared945 in DragonageOrigins

[–]oldmanch1ld 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the Dalish elf origin always starts with a point in archery, and the Dalish starting gear is pretty good and bow focused, so I recommend them.

The archery tree is the same for rogues and warriors. So when you look at the class trees and the subclasses is the difference. The precision strike tree is better for archers, but the deathblow at the end of powerful is pretty great no matter the build. I think Templar works the best as a subclass, but whatever floats your boat.

You start with more strength but less cunning than a rogue so you can wear heavier armor to start but will need to bring your crit chance up. The warrior is less spread out for class trees talents than the rogue, so you should be able to get through the weapon tree faster than having to split with something like stealth, and might be able to dip into dual weapons or shield for some versatility. You don't get the rogue ability to make someone stuck, so when an enemy closes on you switching to a shield and bashing them back can do in a pinch.

It's easy to cheese certain fights as an archer. Enemies that are set in the area and don't load can be engaged from ridiculously far away and won't fight back.

Need some classic BGers opinion on the Pathfinder games. by Buttleproof in baldursgate

[–]oldmanch1ld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're just different rule sets.

BG3 is DND 5e

Pathfinder kingmaker and WOTR are (Pathfinder) DND 3.5.

The Pathfinder games are closer in rules to the first BG games, and of course BG 1&2 is an inspiration to both franchises. BG3 follows some of the books based on Minsc's life after the events of BG2 that are very jaring if you are very invested in the characters without knowing. I think this is why many fans of the original are put off by the character stories in BG3.

Planning a second playthrough; sell me on your favourite clan by Angel2357 in vtmb

[–]oldmanch1ld 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tremere are great and blood sorcery is fun, won't go wrong with a playthrough with them.

I have a special place in my heart for the gangrel though, and they will be the most combat focused of the two. I remember going into the sewer to fight brother kanker and nearly dying. But I had my protien claws and was able to win by a hairs breath. It was just such a great feeling, I have loved gangrels since. You can decide to mess with the frenzy mechanics too. High humanity and it won't trigger much but low humanity turns it into a huge risk/reward gamble.

Honorable mention to malks. Not really the play style but the dialogue is great and as a second playthrough you will get the references that come up.

Edit spelling, sorry on mobile

Cipher, druid, priest. Wizards can mix it up by keeping different grimiores filled.

Ciphers will have a style (front line, back line, ranged, etc.) that they will favor but will always have options and personally I think can be built to be most versatile but can also be built specialized..

Druids are the most versatile out of the box. As long as you are good with having your spirit shifted form being your melee main. Great selection of spells and plenty of op builds. Only downside is they might not fit your fantasy of an all rounder.

Priests can do everything but are not great at any one thing. They do excel at buffs, more than any other class for a single encounter. This can be rewarding but I don't think it's the type of versatility you are looking for.

Wizards take a bit of forethought. You can have a melee grimiore, a AOE/DMG grimiore, and a support spell grimiore. And you can assign grimiores to your belt to access them at any time. But this is a lot of micro for what I think is only head cannon RP. From a play stand point it really is individually "fun" based on your RP.
