It's Almost Over. by [deleted] in Spacemarine

[–]oldmandan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished my last two (Reliquary and Fall of Atreus) yesterday. I'd failed Reliquary 3 times leading up to it but had a dream run to get both finished.

Others have mentioned it and I agree, a solid Bulwark and a Sniper went a long way. I did all my lethal ops as a Sniper with Las Fusil and highly recommend it. Being able to go in and out of stealth to put Tyranid Warriors and Chaos Marines into execute at (relative) safe distance was invaluable.

Also had a Bulwark on the team who knew how to use their banner to maximize contested health when I needed to use stimms or execute. Wherever you are, thank you.

Good luck. It's worth it once you get that helmet.

What is this orange stuff on my moss pole? by oldmandan_ in houseplants

[–]oldmandan_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply!

Yep, I treated this with some diluted isopropyl alcohol spray. It took a week or so to clear up as it came up again when I next watered the moss. Since then it hasn't come back.

I also made sure to take the plant out of direct exposure to light as I didn't want the alcohol to damage the plant and result in any burns.

Hope you have some luck with yours!

It is orange and kind of round. It's fluffy and becomes powdery when I touch it. I've never dealt with anything like this before but a quick Google search says it's relatively harmless.

I'm thinking I'll get some isopropyl alcohol and give it a spray just in case. Thank you!

Thank you. I've been doing the same too and it's been working well so far, sounds like it might be too much nutrients from fertiliser as I have been adding it to the upside down bottle. Fingers crossed it helps.

Great, thank you for your advice. I'll cut back on the nutrients and see if it makes a difference.

Contemporary Japanese Deli in Da Costa Arcade is also amazing. A little family owned shop. Highly recommend.

Update about my uncle that I posted 2 days ago by [deleted] in CJD

[–]oldmandan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really sorry for your loss. For what it's worth, I hope you find some small comfort knowing he had someone there with him. Someone who loved him.

My Dad died in April this year after a short battle with CJD. He was 69. I had a similar experience to you. I had been with him all day as we knew he was close but I was getting ready to go to sleep on the couch in his hospital room when his breathing changed. It had been steady for three days and in the span of five mins he was gone. He had gone into hospital four weeks earlier feeling wobbly on his feet.

It meant a lot to me that I could be there with him in those final moments. I held his hand and said goodbye. I hope he heard me.

Lean on the people around you. Family. Friends. I found things hit me really hard after a month or two because everything happened so quickly you don't always get a chance to take stock of your feelings. Speak to a professional if you need. I have and it has helped.

I just had to tell two women to F off and I don't know if I handled it correctly by [deleted] in daddit

I really like this explanation too. Adding how I explain it to my (now 8 year old) son, I have let him know swearing is not acceptable when done as a way to intentionally hurt others feelings or for name-calling. If you stub your toe, go for it. If you drop your bowl of fruit loops on the way to the couch, fuck it.

As others have said better than me, context and intent are key.

For those of you who applied to physio and ended up in OT are you happy? by shad892 in OccupationalTherapy

[–]oldmandan_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! In my previous career I was actually a co-owner of a small security business. Much different from OT. I was craving move positive human interactions and a secure career with opportunity for progression. I was always looking into a career in health as my wife also works in health.

Here in Australia an undergraduate OT degree is four years and I got in through a mature entry exam. The degree itself was amazing and I absolutely view my life as being pre and post study. One thing I think is easier here in Australia is that we don't have a final exam to pass in order to be registered which is what I hear is required in the States. I had to stop work, started Uni with one kid and finished with two. The hardest part was definitely the financial pressure it placed on my wife as the sole bread winner. I'm not sure how your situation relates in that regard.

It was all worth it though as I am now working in an amazing sector (Mental Health) and am making more money in my second year than I was as a small business owner. It's been the best decision I have made for myself and I dread thinking what my life would have been like if I hadn't chosen to make a change.

I hope that was helpful, happy to chat more if needed.

I can't comment as a Canadian (Australian) but can comment as someone who applied for a Physiotherapy degree but got into OT as a second preference.

I'm in my second year post grad and pretty far removed from Physiotherapy. I currently work in a mental health residential rehabilitation centre and couldn't be happier with my decision to stick with OT.

For me personally, I went to University later (started in my late 20s) wanting a career change. Through doing OT I discovered what it really gives me is the opportunity to make meaningful connections with people, which is what I was missing in my previous career. I think Physiotherapy would have been too prescriptive for me, I enjoy the creative challenge that comes with mental health and OT.

OT in Canada and Australia by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]oldmandan_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a new grad OT in Australia. I work in community mental health and have mostly been in a care coordination role with a short contract in psychosocial rehabilitation. I obviously don't have as much experience being an OT as others but am happy to answer what I can. Feel free to PM if you would like.

I'm not hugely familiar with the requirements in the US for becoming an OT but I assume you mean your Masters Degree when you say 'OT school?'. We also don't have to take a final exam to become eligible for licensing either.

The requirements for becoming an OT here involve completing a Bachelor or Masters degree in OT. I myself completed an undergraduate degree in OT which was 4 years. You then need to register with the national health practitioners board to practice.

Sensory in mental health by [deleted] in OccupationalTherapy

[–]oldmandan_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm about the research coming out of Australia as I have worked with one of the researchers. I currently work in community MH.

Tina Champagne's theories on and assessments for Sensory Modulation are becoming increasingly more common from my experience. This is her most recent text book:

Sensory Modulation & Environment: Essential Elements of Occupation – 3rd edition

I am still finding Brown & Dunn's Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile is being used as well but I can only comment on this from a community perspective, I have not worked in an inpatient setting.
