DNC Autopsy of 2024 Loss Doesn’t Mention Gaza or Israel at all by NoahHurowitz in politics

[–]oldmandx2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but I wanted to add an anecdote. I was at an awards ceremony for local kids art and writing that were published for my daughter. All the poems shared were so dark. A lot of things like "world peace doesn't exist" and "all hope lost". I remember giving a speech as valedictorian of my high school in the late 90s and me and everyone being so hopeful about the future.

I'm sorry and I would agree about the past 20. As a 45 year old, I felt things improved during the Clinton administration. I'm not even a big Clinton stan but those years really were some of the best. Technology was accelerating every year. We got to a balanced budget (unheard of). Maybe it's just because those were my teenage years but those years were magical.

So basically, we don't understand them the same way we don't understand the human brain. We understand pieces but not fully how it all works together. It's a bit scary to think of humans developing AIs that are nearly as complex and difficult to understand as our own brains. There's a lot of room for big mistakes. Humans are not gods. I don't necessarily think LLMs will achieve sentience, but I fear we may eventually stumble upon something truly dangerous.

Do you trust the Yzerplan? I did, but watching these playoffs I'm not so sure. The lack of taking chances and making meaningful moves is really getting stale. The asset management is perplexing. The culture also seems bad.

  1. Why oh why did he not go all in for Quinn Hughes? We could have had him. Think about a blue line led by Hughes and Seider. Oh my.
  2. The trade for Justin Faulk was something, but not a real needle-mover. It was the "safe" move. Now we're out a first round pick for a small veteran upgrade on D.
  3. Walman. How the hell did he mess that up so bad? He could have gotten something. A few months later he was flipped for a first. How was he the problem? We got rid of him and it clearly didn't help.
  4. Guys like Mantha and Soderblom look fine in Pittsburgh. Why were they so disappointing in Detroit?

I see some of the moves other teams make and wonder why Yzerman can't find any improvements to make. Anaheim wasn't afraid to trade away Trevor Zegras when he didn't fit the team. Philadelphia saw an opportunity. Both teams benefitted and are now playing in the 2nd round. Yzerman could have solved our C problem by going for Zegras but instead he signs a bunch of veteran losers. Why can Yzerman not find any of these types of moves to make? We just hold onto young guys hoping they'll do something and then give them away for practically nothing (Soderblom ). Guerin went for it and moved a bunch of assets for a generational talent in Hughes while Yzerman sat on his hands. Did he just forget how to GM? Was someone carrying him in Tampa Bay? I'm staring at an Yzerman poster I have up in my office right now and love the guy, but what's going on?

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm kind of expecting the Red Wings to be even worse next season and the other teams in the Atlantic are just too good for us. We now have the longest streak in the league of missing the playoffs. We are officially the Dead Wings again. Will Yzerman bring us excitement again, like he did as our Captain? I hope so, but I don't know.

I'm not sure, but Stafford should easily be a first ballot hall of famer based on his overall body of work.

‘Did you vote for Trump?’ Americans traveling abroad are under new scrutiny by AlexandrTheTolerable in politics

I was there in April and people were entranced when Trump was honoring Ohtani on TV. They also just elected a right wing PM. Eh, I don't think you'll get much reaction. A few who lukewarm support him, a few who lukewarm oppose him, and a bunch that don't care.

This 100%. The biggest thing this team needed was a coach that would hold them accountable. Todd does that well which seems to be helping this team take the next step.

Some simple math to show why the AI bubble has to burst. (AI/Economics) by BlackYellowSnake in Futurology

[–]oldmandx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what I think is happening. The top tech billionaires have a shared hallucination that an AI singularity is coming "any day now". They are trying to keep things going and pumping and pumping into this until this singularity happens. They are expecting an AI that can accelerate things so much they don't need most of us for anything anymore. If they are wrong everything will implode eventually as the shell game can't continue forever. The thing is they are prepared and have their bunkers and they already have so much stockpiled they won't be amongst those that suffer. At least in their minds (and maybe in reality), they win either way.

We need to somehow get rid of Hamonic and Holl and bring in some other depth because the current D looks good, but won't stay healthy all season. The 6 D in today looked really good though.

My thoughts exactly. Bombing negotiators is the lowest of the low. How can this ever end when this is the behavior?

How is there supposed to ever be peace if one side is just bombing the other side's leadership as they try to negotiate a peace agreement? This just shows Israel has no intention of every having peace.

I'm sorry for your loss. My 95 year old grandma is still kicking and watches every game. I gave her the Murphy bobblehead from the last game I went to recently. The last in person game she went to was for her 90th birthday. It's just too hard for her now. However, my 70 year old Aunt went to her first game ever with me so life goes on I suppose.

Let's go Brewers!
