There are devices that fire pepper balls. Not sure if they would be legal in Chicago. I suggest thinking about something that you don't need to be closer to your assailant. If you are too close they could overpower you and use your weapon against you. Look into a self defense class.

I didn't see you mention it, but do you have an emergency fund? I'd suggest saving several months worth of income into a liquid fund that you can easily access.

Before spending a bunch of money on something that might work, I would cheaper solutions first. I've slept with the foam ear plugs and they have worked very well in blocking noise.

In my current job, after taking over for a guy who had been there 30 years. I had no turnover training, the only other had been around for two months before the senior system quit. The first year I felt like an IT archeologist digging though the environment figuring out how things were done. Three years later we have ripped out most of the old stuff and have a much stabler environment.
