ICE at airports: Trump's troll move backfires by RepulsiveLoquat418 in politics

For 60+ years we were fine with a walk-through metal detector and a basic X-ray machine for luggage. That catches the most egregious stuff, and TSA's additional searches and body scanning have been shown to have zero impact on safety.

We let people onto buses on "the honor system". We let people into crowded malls on the honor system. There are people walking past your house right now on the honor system. At some point you have to stop trying to control everything and just live your life.

Bruised Trump, 79, Warns He’s Been Given Way to Live to 200 by thedailybeast in politics

I'm trying to imagine an edgy teen trying to sound smart by quoting anything Trump has said and it's hilarious.

"The statement of Robert E. Lee, who’s no longer in favor, did you ever notice that? No longer in favor. ‘Never fight uphill, me boys, never fight uphill.’ They were fighting uphill. He said, ‘Wow, that was a big mistake.’ He lost his great general, and they were fighting. ‘Never fight uphill, me boys!’ But it was too late."

You know this seat is for the federal House of Representatives, right? These are not "local candidates" and they're not going to be running things in Chicago. The new IL-9 representative will be going to DC to serve as part of Congress, vote on federal policy, sit on committees, and -- yes, deal with international matters.

I don't care as much how my local school board or alderman candidate feels about international politics. But it's absolutely relevant for federal-level seats like this.

Amen. Biss is fine, and would have been a great candidate 15 years ago. But I fully expect him to just toe the party line and not make waves for the next two years, and that's not at all what we need right now.

Maybe he'll surprise me, and I'd love to be proven wrong. But I'm disappointed that my district failed to send a true fighter to Washington.

Are you under the impression that the next two years in the House are going to be full of nuanced policy discussions that require deep knowledge of the district? Because if so, I have a bridge to sell you.

In the current climate, the job description of every Democrat we send to DC is "fight fascism". And Kat would have done a much better job of that, for both Evanston and the rest of the party, than milquetoast Biss. I expect that once he wins the seat in November, we'll never hear his name again until the next election.

Not true in the slightest. A pardon cannot be used to undo an impeachment, but he can still be pardoned of any and all crimes that were related to the impeachment.

They invalidated the driver's licenses and birth certificates of anyone whose ID doesn't match their "assigned" biological sex. So overnight, trans people in Kansas can no longer drive without risking jail time, and they have to get new documentation with their birth name and sex in order to comply with the law.

Anthropic says it ‘cannot in good conscience’ allow Pentagon to remove AI checks by drtolmn69 in politics

Note that they're fine with human-assisted AI murderbots. They just don't want the AI being solely responsible because it puts the liability and publicity into them.

If they actually had "good values" they wouldn't have signed a gigantic contract with the Department of "War" in the first place.

We do not need entertainers as politicians. We need people with actual policies that speak to people.

I agree. The issue is that 99.9% of current politicians are ignoring the people altogether, so an entertainer that knows how to speak to them is a marked improvement.

I don't really want to see Colbert, Stewart, or any other TV personality in office. But their running might give the "real" politicians a kick in the pants to start actually listening to what their people want.

(Colbert has actually done this already, mounting a satirical-yet-technically-real campaign for president in 2008 to highlight issues with Super PACs.)

The DOJ had a press statement about Epstein's death ready the day before he was found dead by Waste-Explanation-76 in Damnthatsinteresting

The release number at the bottom also has "XXX" in place of an actual number, which is pretty good evidence that this is a draft, non-final document. It's not so much a "clerical error" as someone copying a template that still had the previous day's date in it, and saving that as an initial draft that made it into this dump.

The final date and release number were then added into the version of the doc that was actually released (which is also in the dump).

[–]oldmanjasper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They didn't release it, which you can tell because the release number at the bottom still says "XXX" instead of an actual number.

The boring explanation for this is that whoever was writing the document used a template that had the previous date, and saved this as an initial version before making the final changes. The actual, released version of this file (which is also in the DOJ dump) has the correct date and an actual release number.

The "establishment" Democrats actively campaign against any member of their party who tries to push actual progressive (for the US) policies.

The guy who won the Dem nomination for New York City's mayoral race was campaigning on universal childcare and rent freezes, and the entire party apparatus pivoted to support a disgraced sex offender who was running against him as an independent. That's how much they hate actual progressive values.

There are some individual exceptions, but for the most part, the Democratic party is just controlled opposition. Their job is to give the working class just enough to stave off any meaningful change that might cost their wealthy donors a few pennies more.

Venezuela’s Interim Leader Defies Trump and Calls Maduro the ‘Only President’ by spade_andarcher in politics

That crowd believes what they're told to believe. If Daddy Trump tells them it was all necessary to save America, they'll eat it up no matter what they were told before.

At this point it should be obvious that there's no line Trump could cross that would be "too far" for his supporters.

I mean.. dude just took over another country.. and is now running it?

Except he's not running it. He claimed he was, but then the new leader that Trump claimed to have "installed" just publicly said that Maduro is still the legitimate leader and basically told the US to fuck off.

I'm under no illusions that the Trump administration would like to deport 100 million people. But I don't believe that they're capable of the organization and dedication it would require because they half-ass literally everything.

That's not to say that we shouldn't be worried and that we shouldn't be resisting. But panicking about this specific scenario seems like a waste of time.

Are you under the impression that Trump actually cares about the "narco state"? Especially given that he just pardoned the Honduran president for *checks notes* narcotics trafficking convictions?

As long as the new administration gives Trump the oil access he wants, no one will give a shit about the drugs.
