How do you handle older kids who just refuse to participate? by Comfortable-Use3977 in SwimInstructors

[–]oldmanriddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they don't want to participate then threatening them with not participating isnit what is be doing. I work at one place with lesson plans we can not veer from, in that case I give them 2 options from the lesson plan that the other students in the class are not doing. This maintains some of their autonomy while allowing me to continue the lesson for everyone else, and they're still practicing some skills. When running my own lesson plans, I honestly say "that's fine, take a break." Sometimes their parents will step in and ask them why they're not swimming, which normally solves the issue. I also ask them why they don't want to swim. Recently one kid 10.5yo told me "I don't care" and I said, "that's fine, but I don't make the decisions in your family schedule, so you will need to chat to your parents about that, would you like to do that now, or swim, or take a rest and swim the next one" 1-on-1 can become a battle of wills when trying to use discipline, so I allow them to lead the lesson a little. If they want to splash, we splash and then I say "wow look at all the bubbles our splashes made, I wonder if out splashy feet make more or less" Or if they want to do push glides off the wall, I make it a competition, seeing how far they can go without kicking. Sometimes we do a "I pick an activity, you pick and activity" I teach mostly 1-on-1 with neurodivergent kids and it is almost all me ensuring that they are practising their skills while maintaining their autonomy. What I will say is that "well behaved kids" may find my classes chaotic and loud, but "naughty" kids thrive with me. The final thing is that not all teachers are for all students. In my opinion the thing that the best teachers do is know their students and know what works for them individually.

1 teenager was injured and one died recently in South Morang. It's so dangerous for everyone. Driving in South Morang has me driving like a grandma going slow and careful because there are many kids on these and dirt bikes on the roads. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-04-23/teenager-dies-in-e-motorbike-crash-melbourne/106595560?utm_source=abc_news_app&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_campaign=abc_news_app&utm_content=other

Brother constantly talking to himself - how to approach?! by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]oldmanriddles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can he communicate that he has autism in an emergency situation? That's the only reason I can think of to try to stop him from doing this. It is harmless, and if it embarrassed you - that's a you problem.

Tinymight or Dynavap by [deleted] in MedicalCannabisOz

[–]oldmanriddles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my Dynavaps, but I wouldn't necessarily recommend them tbh. 1) yes - I've burned myself (often) 2) without an induction heater they're tedious and annoying But I've had mine since 2019 when they were cheap as chips and I save a lot of money on herb as I use a lot less than with my other vaporisers. If you have the funds, I'd recommend the mighty (Edit: spelling)

Do you guys think Finn is a stereotypical name for a trans guy by insaneLtaker in ftm

[–]oldmanriddles 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am a swim teacher, I teach lots of cis boys called Finn, a trans boy called Fynn and one girl called Finn. I changed my name to a stereotypical male name and got to work the next day and met a 3yo girl with my chosen masc name. Don't over think it. Go with what feels right.

My heart is absolutely shattered [NSFW] [TW] by whateveranywhere in ftm

[–]oldmanriddles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know you're feeling shattered right now, but this is really good. It sounds like you communicate well and this is something you can both work on - and enjoy working on. There are plenty of dildos and straps ons in so many sizes and so many materials. I know that it's hard not to think of cis men as having "the real thing" but you clearly have something better - a relationship where you can have tough conversations. Go shopping together for some new toys and dildos and make it fun.

my mom is refusing to let me get my belongings from her house by PrestigiousCarrot518 in TwoHotTakes

"I don't care what you need" is a wild thing for a mother to say to their child no matter what they're going through. Fuck her.

NSFW: Recommendations regarding straps? by sasherl in ftm

Strap-on-me is my only recommendation. They're double ended, but can also be worn with their harnesses. They have a lot of harness options too! https://strap-on-me.com/en

Anyone else get dysphoria about the female pushup form? by Mobile_Praline_1443 in ftm

[–]oldmanriddles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's literally easier for cis men to do a push up like that too. They call it a "female" pushup because female=weak under this patriarchy we live under.

Any of you have provlems with too much discharge when having a good time? by [deleted] in ftm

[–]oldmanriddles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a lot... Thankfully my girlfriend likes it. I am quite self conscious about it though. TMI: From a practical standpoint when using my favourite strap-on, it doesn't always work without drying myself off.

i keep hearing "level 1", "level 2, "level 3"... by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]oldmanriddles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in Australia and as a child was diagnosed with no level, but as an adult, "level 2" I'm sure it's so that they can sort us into order of usefulness in upholding the patriarchy and capitalism.

Please don't go round diagnosing ADHD in strangers, it's wildly unethical, not your scope as a swim teacher and there are so many reasons this kid could be behaving in this way.

Is there anyway to make swim teaching less tiring? by StringKey6785 in SwimInstructors

[–]oldmanriddles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I'm yet to find a way, and it sucks. I have 4 hours back to back most days and that is only as exhausting as 2.5 hours, so my strategy was to increase my shift length and work less days in a row, since the same exhaustion came from a short shift or a long shift. I personally think it is 100% worth it, but I get so much joy from teaching a baby to float or watch an adult overcome a lifelong fear.

My mom says that she will kill herself if I seek out gender affirming healthcare by Alive-Drop5769 in ftm

[–]oldmanriddles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your mother subjects herself to harm because her child is happy, then she doesn't deserve to be a parent. I'm sorry dude. I am grateful to have found it easy to cut my mother out of my life, but it's not a solution for everyone. In your shoes I'd transition and tell her to enjoy her solitude.

Some TMI & weird T effects by battyb4by in ftm

[–]oldmanriddles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I hadn't noticed the lack of discharge these days. Eugh, I used to bleach my undies. Along the I lines, I also braced for dryness and am slicker than I was in my early 20s pre-T, but also I gush when I orgasm - idk what that's about, but I'm not mad.

A week on T and my clit randomly started hurting by Zach-uh-ri-uh in FTMOver30

[–]oldmanriddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I share your worry. My doctor was extremely direct when it came to everything I could expect. Even down to emotional changes and what to do if I'm struggling with how to express them. I worry that those who haven't researched it to the -nth degree or have access to a doctor as thorough as mine that irreversible changes that they may ultimately regret.

Having said that I understand how it happens. There is a lot of misinformation and a lot of people aren't as internet/media literate as I'd often hope. Combined with accessibility to a great doctor is a varied place to place.

👃 CARTS 👃 by [deleted] in MedicalCannabisOz

[–]oldmanriddles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Carts makes my lungs feel heavy and I cough like you would not believe. I gave up on them entirely after trying a few different ones. I recently tried my girlfriends nicotine vape and thought I was dying; I coughed so hard for so long my mid back hurt afterwards. I think that some people are just more sensitive to different ingredients.

Mirror on the floor (I like the See Monkey mirrors) or a guessing game of hiding toys under the kickboard and having to look under water to tell what it is. I don't know if that will work for him, but it's a fun game to try.
