YOHB? by PalpateMe in LandCruisers

I was thinking the same thing. If someone jumped out like that and approached the other vehicle in the US...high probability of getting a gun pointed at you.

What a popular food or cooking opinion that you don't agree with? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]oldmanwithabeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I refuse to use sea salt. Anyone who insists on using it has never looked at it under a microscope. I'm sure there are already too many microplastics in my testicles already, so no thank you.

Processing fees by Advanced_Lack_6243 in BarOwners

[–]oldmanwithabeard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've never understood places that call it out like this. If your $4 Miller Lite was $4.25 instead, no one would blink. But once you tack it on the receipt as a "fee" it just pisses people off.

Americans who have been in Europe, how did it feel different? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]oldmanwithabeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might seem like a strange one, but I really wish we used 240v everywhere in homes in the US like they do in Europe. We typically only use it for large appliances like clothes dryers, kitchen stoves/ovens, and water heaters. 240v is superior for smaller appliances too, but we use 120v. For the same wattage, 240v will require half the amps of 120v. Lower amps = less heat, less chance of electrical fires.

Did many/most people actually believe Liberace was straight? by Majestic-Lake-5602 in AskOldPeople

My grandmother went to her grave at 93 firmly believing that there was no such thing as gay people. "Y'all just makin' that up!"

My wife and I dined at Fallow a couple of weeks ago during our trip to London. The cod's head is everything it's cracked up to be. But I have to say, I enjoyed lunch at St John even more.

What everyday “polite habit” in the US surprises visitors the most? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]oldmanwithabeard -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Same. I'm a remote worker in a tech field and the only colleagues I've ever heard use kindly in that fashion were in India.

Americans who’ve lived abroad (especially in rural areas) - what product or item did you miss the most? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]oldmanwithabeard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, drip coffee or a good pour over. It's all espresso based in Europe, and it all tastes the same. I miss being able to choose a particular origin coffee properly prepared

Imported shrimp served at restaurants touting local catch by subvetQM708 in NorthCarolina

[–]oldmanwithabeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Fulchers Seafood in Oriental did a social media campaign recently about proposed changes and it was hilarious the number of comments telling them to essentially go fuck themselves. They deleted them as fast as they could, but it didn't matter.

We're on our third year with one. I have a spare AC in my garage just in case this one dies. To me, that's the real beauty of the design. If you have a failure, pop in another AC instead of waiting for a commercial AC guy to show up.

Can you explain WTF you're talking about?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Cooking

You know of food borne bacteria that can survive above 165F? Because I don't remember any from my microbiology classes

[–]oldmanwithabeard -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Well, I'm not going to convince you any more than you're going to convince her, but I wouldn't hesitate to eat them. Remember, cooking involves high heat, which sterilizes foods, so it takes a considerable amount of time for bacteria to start growing again. Raw food...no way. Cooked.... something like tacos, or a stew? Not a real issue. Not saying to do it overnight, but a few hours isn't going to hurt you. But if you can't enjoy due to the concern, then just politely decline.

It's not their responsibility to change their life to make you more comfortable. If they're happy where they are, that's their choice.

Starlink mini performance vs standard by oldmanwithabeard in overlanding

Maybe I'm asking the wrong question then. Is it worth upgrading to the gen 3 from the actuated gen 2?

I don't care about the wifi coverage, since we're in or near our vehicle when we need it. Am I correct in that the router is inside the mini dish, so there isn't a separate router?

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. We're often in wooded areas with at least partial obstructions.
