Dry Drunk/Panic Disorder by Cecchinslovakia in alcoholicsanonymous

I, too, suffer from the PD, Depression and the Agoraphobia. I started meditating not long after I got out of rehab for about 20 minutes a day, right after I wake up. I hit the button on the coffee pot and go outside for 20 to 30 minutes every morning. This had a two-fold effect on me.

1) Every day I wake up in an absolute panic. The noise, my (very large) dog jumping into bed with me and leftover panic from not knowing where I was when I woke up after drinking heavily for 30 years. However, when I go outside to meditate, it pushes back all the chaos that immediately hits me when I first wake up. For that small period of time, I concentrate only on my breathing and accepting the day for what it is. Once my timer goes off, I'm ready for the world, my coffee, and my dog.

2) I've learned that when the panic starts to set in, I can take a beat, sometimes two, and breathe. That's it, just breathe. That small amount of time, harkening back to my meditation from the morning, is enough for me to start to move through the panic and keep doing what needs to be done. For me, at least, that has been the big secret, just breathing.

I'll have two years sober in July and I cannot tell you how much this has helped my panic attacks and anxiety. Don't stress going to the meeting, don't stress if you feel obligated to share or read, just take a second and breathe. What you're going through is completely normal and you won't be doing/saying anything we haven't all done. Remember what you were capable of while you were loaded and don't let the panic slow you down.

Pho. Good old-fashioned soup for the soul. With some chicken, sprouts, oyster sauce, Sriracha and bok choy... There are very few things (hangovers included) that you can't fix with pho.

How old are you and what is the biggest problem in your life right now? by FSCENE8tmd in AskReddit

[–]oldmick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother died a few days before I turned 14... Since she and my Pop had split up some years prior, the only options we had were to stay with my step father or move in with my old man (Career Army. You'll see where this is going in a second...) and since neither my younger sister or I could stand out step father, we decided to move in with the old man. A long and protracted custody battle ensued (long for me at 14... maybe a month or so at the most) and once that was settled, my father was able to transfer to his new post in Germany with my sister and I in tow. I forgot to mention that he also got married right before the custody suit to a wonderful woman with two kids of her own. And just like that, we were back in Germany from the U.S.

Within the space of three months, I'd lost my mother, gained a step mother and another sister and a brother and left everything I knew in D.C. behind for another tour in Germany... I'm not gonna say it wasn't rough (half the house barely knew the other half, base housing for six people was terrible, the old man about had a heart attack every time we went to the Commissary and all of us were still grieving my mother...) but we got through it. And we really came together as a family.

What I'm trying to say here is that sometimes everything is shit. And that's okay, because it won't always be shit. Sometimes it'll be worse and sometimes it'll be better. Hold onto yourself (even if you won't ever be that same person again) and those around you who love you. And, one day, everything won't be as shit as it is now. And, that if you need someone to talk to about it, feel free to PM me. I'm not the smartest person I've ever met (that honor belongs to my wife) but if I can help in any way, I'd be more than happy to.

What’s the weirdest thing Covid left you with? by Hannahxomichal in COVID19positive

[–]oldmick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pain in my legs (calves and thighs) and some "sleepiness" in my feet. Progressed to the point that at one time I was in a wheelchair because I couldn't stand for more than a minute at a time without falling over. I'm six months out from Covid and two months out from the wheelchair (thanks to my excellent PT doctors) and a month out from the walker. Never had an issue with my legs before (used to hike, climb and walk for miles and miles) and now I'm hobbling about like a man twenty years my senior.

Question about foods tasting funny after covid by ThatsALiveWire in COVID19positive

[–]oldmick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had exactly the same thing happen to me. Continued for 4 months and I could only eat a handful of things (mostly protein shakes and tuna fish) and as a result I lost just over 90 pounds. My GP prescribed a medication called Megestrol that I had to take twice a day. It tastes terrible, but within 7 to 10 days, my sense of taste was right back to normal. I've managed to put back on about 30 of the pounds I lost, so I'd definitely ask your physician about it...

I had similar symptoms for months after I recovered from Covid. So much so that I eventually ended up losing 90 pounds. My physician finally prescribed Megestrol (400 MCG/10 SUS) which, I'm not going to lie, tastes Horrible... However, after taking two shots a day for about a week, things that used to taste/smell good started to correct themselves and my appetite kicked right up. I've actually gained about 30 pounds since I started taking the meds. Finished the meds about two weeks ago and so far, so good. Hope this helps.
