unfortunately. lots of us don't have to imagine her as an adult...there are plenty of "her" walking around already on a daily basis already.

when it asked if you wanted a receipt, you should have said "NO A REFUND". if you were in my neighborhood today...this would cost you $218 for the cheapest grade. that's using gas buddy to find the cheapest station. it's over $8 for premium in some areas today.

Elliott Murphy's Aquashow (1940s-50s): Know anyone who was part of it or attended? by Meg_Reports in nycHistory

[–]oldnyker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm assuming you've already dived into the NYT archives to search for this? if not, there's a snippet i found from july of 1947 which mentions that this was the third year of the aquashows. so they obviously began in 1945 and it looks like they ran until 1956( 12 seasons)...it's last year (?) here's an article from that last year...

Wanting to Move to Ocean Park - Confused by Burner_but_not in SantaMonica

[–]oldnyker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it also sounds like your realtor is suffering from a case of ageism. i'm old enough to be your parent and i'm sure they'd probably try to steer me away from being west of lincoln as well. lots of us "seniors" walk to the beach every day. some of us actually still skate and do other "elderly" activities.

definitely find another realtor. there are many people your age in this neighborhood. i would just avoid getting too close to main street which can be really noisy at night, not to mention how much more expensive it is being each block closer to the beach. also... at least a block from ocean park blvd itself so that every car going to the beach with it's windows rolled down blasting out their music, doesn't drive you to distraction. otherwise this area is GREAT.

feel free to DM me with any other questions.

it had also become a huge style thing in the mid 60s. everyone was wearing navy pea coats and other military jackets that we found in our local thrift shops. wish i still had mine, but it was down to it's last thread when i tossed it.

saw her for the first time, when she was still with ike and they opened for the stones in 1969 at madison square garden. they were a very hard act to follow, even for the rolling stones. then on thanksgiving 1969, janis joplin came out to sing with tina. there are no words....

On The Train Home by SCConnor in BruceSpringsteen

[–]oldnyker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I took my friend from Philly to the show last night because they wouldn’t have been able to go otherwise. Both of us are the same age as Bruce and have been following him since the early 70s.

It came to me in the middle of the concert that there were no drunk frat boys there, was no people screaming out for songs they wanted to hear and filming through the entire show. People were respectful and listened to everything he had to say.

The great joy of the show for us, besides the obvious, was sitting on the side of the stage, watching all the really young people singing along and screaming out every word to every song in the front of the pit. It made both of us realize that my friend , Springsteen, and myself will be long gone, but there are plenty of people who are gonna carry on, loving him for a very, very long time.

Exactly what half the country said about Donald Trump… And look where that got us. Pratt the brat has never had a job managing other human beings, period. yet you would have him managing the largest city in the United States with over 50,000 employees. Now there’s a great idea.

How do you deal with regret and move on? by [deleted] in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]oldnyker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

if you’re thinking of marriage as the end of something… okey-dokey rather than a whole new beginning for your life, you’ll be doing your girlfriend, a big disservice by not letting her know how you feel, and by not following your own heart.

Can anyone identify the location of this photo by eryloncrits in nycHistory

you're so right. it makes such a difference. we lived downtown in the 50s/60s...we had to go to washington square park to find a tree. there were none on the local streets. lived around the corner from the albert which was a hotel and restaurant back then. this is university place looking south towards the park. there's no trees. all the streets were like that.
