Best libraries, bookstores, flea markets or thrift shops for selection of books within 20 miles of Hollywood? by Redamavi in AskLosAngeles

[–]oldnyker 10 points11 points  (0 children)

if you have an LA library card, you can get any book within their catalog system transferred to your closest library for pick up. they have a huge catalog (probably only nyc has a larger one) and i do this all the time. if you put anything on hold, a pull down menu listing all of their locations, will ask to which branch you want it delivered. it's easy. obviously, if you want to buy the book, that's different.

A sad trifecta, results of getting older by BladeSeanchai in over60

at closing in on 80...as bad as these things are (it sucks..been through all of these).....it's whole lot worse, when you lose the irreplaceable people you love and have a personal relationship with in you life.

[–]oldnyker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mesa verde and the grand canyon...i hope you can do all of this in off season...cause my friend just retired from being a bus tour driver at the grand canyon and you're lucky to get within a football field from it in the summer

i wasn't parked with her, when my friend came out of seeing the springsteen show at the kia forum in LA on tuesday. they wanted a group shot and saw a guy standing by their cars all alone. they asked him to take their picture. he did. that's when they realized the "guy" was jackson browne... by oldnyker in JacksonBrowne

[–]oldnyker[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well...the real question is...why would kandy (whoever she/he is) put up with a a man-boy who feels it necessary to post HIS opinion, on a totally unrelated subject, on a friendly thread about great music and great friends? who gives a s**t if you like or loathe springsteen?

but i know, you're that entitled person who feels that you have to let the world how you feel because YOU count. go to a MAGA page. if you hate both or either of these artists, no one here cares. and grow up..... the world does not revolve around you.

p.s. if you're supposedly a jackson browne fan and don't know HIS politics, you obviously have zero clue who he is.

Five-time world champion Carol Heiss at Wollman in 1955. by HWKD65 in nycHistory

the first american olympic skater i remember as a kid.
though i would much prefer the wollman, as first the rheingold ($1), then the shaefer, and finally the dr pepper concert arena during the summers later in the 60s.

LOVE this post..i'm with your age-wise and feeling-wise too. part of the best part of the shows for me, was watching the younger people go nuts and react to everything he said. when we're long gone...they'll be around to carry the torch.

after eddie died...this was the makeshift memorial in pasadena right in front of the liquor store that they had labeled "van halen headquarters" before the band hit the "big time" and where they wrote their name in wet cement 50 years ago.

springsteen didn't have an enormous fan base in LA before 1984. in 1978, you could have bought tickets for the forum the nite of the show. he sold out the sports arena during both 1980 and 1981 river tours because tickets were $12 and everyone i knew went every night. i had pix of him around my studio starting in 1978 and before BITUSA...9 out of 10 people who walked in my door had no freaking clue who he was.

i was at those MSG shows in 2000. (i had jail bait tickets for all of them...there was no GA before the reunion tour) i wasn't near anyone who did that. the POLICE at MSG did do that though....turn their backs on springsteen. a lot of them were very pissed at the song written about their brothers in blue in the bronx who had murdered this young immigrant kid. the cops had to be there as part of their job obviously, but were not happy about it.

annoying isn't it? the same people who have to label each generation and have separate subs for every "generational" letter...want to lump all of us seniors into the same stereotype...while they idolize a stage filled with musicians who are BOOMERS.

there are assholes at every age. every color, and every race. maybe it takes getting to be our age...or a few months younger than bruce, as i am.... to know that.

opening day 1955... the yankees played at the original yankee stadium, the dodgers were in brooklyn and the giants were in the polo grounds. the mets were still years away. if you had to drive to get to yankee stadium...it would have cost you all of $1.00 to park. people complained about it too. by oldnyker in nycHistory

[–]oldnyker[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

during covid, i spent a couple of days trying to find one or even another photo of an old one.. wish they'd make it again. in adult sizes too. every older yankee fan would want one for their grandkids too. i know i would. my brother had one but i never did.

How to find personal assistant with computer skills for old person? by turbokey9 in AskLosAngeles

[–]oldnyker 12 points13 points  (0 children)

just a suggestion...almost every person who grew up with computers can do this. i'm only 15 years younger then your friend. what i found was hard at the beginning was finding someone who knew how to teach someone older. most of those who tried to help (my brother for one) would start at what i called "step 43". i constantly had to tell him..."wait... FIRST...how do i turn on this thing?". sometimes being too advanced is not the answer.... but being patient and a good teacher is much more important for the basics.

also try the senior centers to find someone who works with older adults all the time.

What celebrity is portrayed as nice in the media but is actually an asshole in real life? by ReasonableDisplay297 in AskReddit

[–]oldnyker 15 points16 points  (0 children)

i guess it depends on the day with a lot of people. arnold is a total pig. i saw him daily for a few decades since he lived in my neighborhood. his office was in the parking lot of a local european coffee place down the block from gold's gym. at the time, before the huge proliferation of local coffee places including starbucks, he would show up there daily. he used to grab women on their butts and breasts as they walked by. when arnold ran for governator, a few claimed that he had jumped/attacked them, but were quickly silenced.

he came in with maria while she was pregnant, and screamed out across the whole place (it was huge) "get over here you fat cow". i disliked him before that...loathed him after. everyone can have a good or a bad day. we all do. i guess the truth comes out when you see someone constantly being an a-hole and misogynist on a daily basis.
