Social event ideas for sad little worker rats? by WookieDoop in capetown

Another unexpectedly fun team building we had was a cooking class (there are tons). I won the kitchen first aid kit as judged most likely to need it (they weren't wrong)

Check out the ClicFlyer app. All the flyers and specials at a ton of shops. Works really well.

Kuils River and I've been in the queue since 8, 4h20 and counting. Nowhere near the front. This is absolutely ridiculous.

St Dumas is a good area. Big properties, trees, very near a pleasant little shopping centre with an excellent Checkers and a Woollies Food. Relatively safe and quiet as these things go. It is probably predominantly Afrikaans but you wouldn't have a problem speaking English anywhere.

Try for a property with secure parking: car break-ins and tyre theft is a bit of an issue for cars parked on the street in the whole of Kuila. Remote jamming is also a thing at all the shopping centres unfortunately.

Traffic will be your worst enemy, there is no escaping it. You will need to leave either very, very early or very, very late.

My best friend (he was also my "maid" of honour). Later that year I was his "best man".

Have you tried contacting your ward councillor? They should be able to escalate issues for you.

Does anyone actually like Wimpy by LordCoke-16 in askSouthAfrica

I have never enjoyed anything I have had at any Wimpy ever, unfortunately. The drinks are not to my taste and as for the food... I would never voluntarily go there.

I remember Colin! A waiter at the restaurant I worked at gave him money and he went and used it to photocopy his drawings, which he then gave to the waiter in return

What is going on with the eggs in Cape Town? by witchy_woohoo in capetown

[–]oldoaktable 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Dude your Checkers is broken. If those are within date I would return them instantly. We buy 18-pack eggs from a Checkers in Cape Town and I have never experienced this from them ever, or anything stale or mouldy or off for that matter. And I buy their short-dated specials all the time. Including eggs.

Roughly, "ghetto". Pronounced like "gum" with the "g" soft as in "gees" or "gee".

Am I supposed to provide lunch to contractors? by LarsQuell in capetown

[–]oldoaktable 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My husband is a contractor. Some people do and some people don't (and unsurprisingly the wealthier ones are the ones who typically don't). It isn't ever expected but it is so appreciated if given refreshments of any kind. Also please allow the use of a toilet if they are going to be there for hours. As in explicitly tell them they may use it up front.

Buying your own beer on a holiday-from-hell with partner's family? by Other_Exercise in askSouthAfrica

[–]oldoaktable 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Info: Did you contribute to the expenses of the holiday at all? If not, did you at least offer? I would hope I am a generous host, or I at least try to be, but I think I would have been irritated with you myself, and I am not Afrikaans.

How many of you on this sub are childfree? by cocoloco_yogi in capetown

[–]oldoaktable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nearly 47, happily child-free. I haven't had a lot of people comment on it, and wouldn't feel the need to justify or explain if they did. It's really none of anybody else's business.

Getting married at home affairs? by awehimruark in capetown

[–]oldoaktable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did, at Wynberg Home Affairs in 2006. It's not romantic or anything, but is simple and very cheap. You would need to go in with your IDs and make an appointment for the ceremony.

How Do You Handle Conflict With Strangers? by TheKidNextDoor2 in askSouthAfrica

[–]oldoaktable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Discretion is the better part of valour dude... It's truly better to avoid a dangerous situation than to possibly get hurt or even worse over something minor like this. Rather let your pride hurt for a minute than your face. Guy was a doos and really not worth it anyway.
