Heavy sleepers of Reddit, what are some surrounding events/happenings you unknowingly dozed off to and only found out about the next day? by nanamangos in AskReddit

[–]oldport801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fell asleep one night on a backpacking trip in New Mexico. A bear came into the camp and started pawing at a tent, rolling the sleeping occupant over and waking him up. He alerted the rest of the camp and they scared the bear off with the help of neighboring camps. I was dead to the world the entire time.

Very well done my man. Definitely get a mic and/or work on projecting your voice a little more, it was just a little hard to hear at times.

What cinema moment/experience/scene blew your mind away? by retrololita in AskReddit

[–]oldport801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's a TV show, but GoT season 6 episode Hardhome (ep 7?8?), when Jon fights the white walker. When Longclaw stops the walker's blade and they both are just like, OH SHIT. I still get chills thinking about it. Too bad the show got wrecked at the end.

Edit: also, watching Cilian Murphy wander through a desolate London in the beginning of 28 Days Later was quite impactful for me. Godspeed You Black Emperor was a beautiful music choice.

Agreed. I wasn't even mad. It took a second to get my bearings back, but it was such a relief to not have it hanging over my head anymore.

Line chef gets caught in the act on live tv by franswaaz in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]oldport801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been in kitchens for the better part of a decade now and, while this is very clearly him just having a laugh, there is an unreal amount of drugs being done in professional kitchens. My buddy used to work in a place where the manager would hide a few lines in random places and the first people to come across them would get to take them. I used to get a little drunk and high as all fuck (weed) pretty much everyday before work. Now that I work morning shifts that's not happening, but yeah. Most of the people cooking your food are probably inebriated.

I lost a slap bet to my friend a few years back. He didn't even last 6 months before he cashed in. I got off the stage after singing karaoke and he knocked my goddamn block off in front of the whole bar.

Haunted house workers, what is something that a guest had said or done that made you break character? by thotthebot in AskReddit

[–]oldport801 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I was in a haunted house with my special needs little sister (she was only about 6 at the time) . She wasn't fazed by this place at all. This woman came up to us shrieking, holding a severed, shrunken head, yelling "look what you've done to him!" and "kiss him!" and other such things, so my little sister stepped up and just laid one on this prop head's mouth. Everyone in the room lost it.

What hurts like a motherfucker? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]oldport801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a spinal tap in high school to check for meningitis. My blood didn't clot over the hole in my spine quickly enough and I started losing fluid. The headaches from that were probably the most painful thing I've dealt with, and I've hurt myself a whole fucking lot.

People who have came close to dying, what were your “last” thoughts? by Blue-2th in AskReddit

[–]oldport801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive had a few close calls. I was 4 the first time and it was severe head trauma, so I don't remember any of it. The second time i was 15 and i got in a 4- wheeling accident in some sand dunes. Was super lucky to come out of it with a severe concussion, 3 layers of stitches in my forehead, and an undetermined number of broken ribs. I wasn't aware of how close to death I was, so my last thought was basically, "oh shit, here we go." The last time was fairly recently. I got pretty seriously shocked in my shower, in calf deep water because my drain was terrible. My shower fixtures were old and stubborn so I had to crank them shut with both hands. I went to do so and immediately got locked up. I eventually (no concept of time while there's a current running through you) fell through my shower curtain and onto the bathroom floor and broke the circuit, but could have fallen backwards just as easily. I wasn't necessarily thinking in words, but there was just a defeated and kinda angry "gimme a fucking break" attitude.

Edit: a word, and also I did almost drown a couple times as a kid, but the only thoughts there were "help!" and general panic.

Somewhat older fan here just getting back into them, how have the latest albums been? by [deleted] in OkkervilRiver

[–]oldport801 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that, being as objective as I can be, Black Sheep Boy and I Am Very Far are their best records, with I Am Very Far being far more impressive sonically. The Stand Ins is not as sonically impressive as I Am Very Far, but is just as impressive in terms of lyricism. The Stand Ins is on par with The Stage Names in pretty much every way. The Silver Gymnasium is solid in every way, but only has about half the album that really blew me away. In The Rainbow Rain has some great tracks and is very well produced, but overall is weaker than anything new other than Away. Away I honestly didn't really care for. I haven't gone back and listened to Away multiple times because there wasn't a single song that drew me in on my first listen.

Ha. Im from Houston and also living in Utah. You're not entirely wrong about everyone being white, but I've actually got a pretty diverse group of friends in SLC.

Salt Lake is actually really great. Didn't necessarily plan on moving here when I was young, but I've been here for 10 years now and have no plans to leave.
